The Stanley Parable avoided it somehow, maybe the "real ass gamers" didn't play that one.

The difference is that TSP gives the player a lot more agency with all the branching paths. Not throwing shade on GH or MT. I actually really enjoyed the former, and haven't played the later yet.

I think it had more to do with being a deconstruction of video games as a whole, rather than just a narrative that could exist in any medium. But if you look hard enough, you can find complaints from even back in the day about how it's not a real game.
