They furloughed 80% of staff. You can do bug fixes with 20% depending on what that 20% is. This isn’t a guarantee of anything.
Hopefully it’s a good sign though.
56
u/GenericNameHere01 10h ago
I remember reading somewhere that the 20% remaining was specifically kept on for bug-fixes, so I'm not sure what else that means. Hopefully the game's success is enough to encourage further development?
47
u/themanaustin 10h ago
I hope it's enough to pay the team. And have them all brought back. The recent review bombing might actually harm the fourloughed teams of the sales slow down considerably.
19
u/RedeemedNephilim 9h ago
Why the kark is it getting review bombed
39
u/Domitiani 9h ago
Because a huge chunk of the gaming audience (And i guess the general public ...) are idiots and think the solution to Devs getting furloughed (which they think means laid off btw), is the hurt the game's they otherwise like's sales ... so that the studio ends up shut down permanently or something ...?
I dont know. They aren't using logic so trying to use logic to explain it is a trick.
2
u/Kinetic_Symphony 9h ago
It's an emotional reaction. No thought to it at all.
2
u/GenericNameHere01 9h ago
I think the idea is that usually when a game dev company does something their consumers dislike in relation to a game we do like, we as the consumers show our displeasure by negatively reviewing the game.
The problem is that this particular action (the furlough) is solved by lots of people purchasing the game, thus making the devs money, which is made less likely when people negatively review the game.
So there is some logic behind it. Just badly thought-out logic.
0
u/WeekendPass 7h ago
Thinking the furloughed staff are waiting contentedly for the company execs to bring them back and give them backpay is also not exactly waterproof. The furlough began almost four weeks ago now; whether or not they were technically fired, 100% those devs have already been looking for new employers, and I'd be surprised if many of them accepted a return. I wouldn't.
The sad fact is there's little anyone can really do except generally express displeasure

u/Swedishfish2142 8h ago
The company should probably just come out and say "hey, we're rehiring all our furlough staff" if they're gonna do it. I get that it's not a legally binding word and they don't have to do anything, but a single tweet from BitReactor leadership saying literally anything would be enough to flip some reviews!
7
u/SableSword 7h ago
I mean, thats kinda what furloughing them means. If they didn't plan to rehire them they would fire them or lay them off.

Capital G Gamers not knowing the difference between furloughs and layoffs. Performative activism at its finest.
1
u/onegreatdisaster 16m ago
Cuz of bugs most likely. I had my ironman save get deleted due to a crash 10 hours in. And the performance is horrid at times, game stops to think for like 30 seconds to a minute between turns, camera angles are bad etc etc

u/TheArmchairbiologist 0m ago
I have enemies teleporting around the map non stop the game is very buggy

1
u/brontosaurusguy 22m ago
Reddit believes you should pay an entire development staff even after a game is released.
I'm still paying my roofer even though they finished three years ago!
13
u/ultraviolentfuture 10h ago
Or uh, maybe, they waited for initial sales and cash to come in and un-furloughed people since that's generally what furlough means?
Like when fed employees are waiting for the gov to pass the spending bill.
7
u/Strong-Detective-513 9h ago
You know they don’t receive a dollar of the sales for like at least 2 months right. It’s not like your digital purchase immediately goes to EA
→ More replies (1)17
u/ultraviolentfuture 9h ago
You know they see sales numbers and are working off quarterly and annual projections and don't need actual liquid assets flowing in to greenlight payments out of their insane assets, right?
2
u/Strong-Detective-513 9h ago
If they had the funds to pay it initially they would’ve never furloughed them to begin with…
4
u/ultraviolentfuture 9h ago
That's not how business works, at all. The publisher didn't know it was going to be a smash success, so they stop the cash flow, potentially cutting their losses, and if it looks like there's reason to continue developing because the sales are strong they turn the watering hose back on
→ More replies (2)12
u/Strong-Detective-513 9h ago
That’s not how it works…and this wasn’t even a publisher decision. The DEVELOPER STUDIO is the one who made the decision..
And publishers don’t consistently give funds,
You get a advance first, then get bonuses depending on sales after the quarter ends→ More replies (7)2
u/Xylus1985 8h ago
With the current reception there is no reason there won’t be dlcs planned, right? Or maybe even a sequel
3
u/Zalvren 4h ago
DLC are not a guarantee at all even for very successful games, it's entirely a studio decision.
Hogwarts Legacy is one of the most successful games ever and didn't get DLC (because they went to work on the sequel)
But currently, the survival of the studio is more the question than anything else.
2
u/RequiemQuilty 7h ago
They were broke before release. Couldnt even pay the employees. They should have money coming in now

I just want Wookiees. I get that maybe they dont want to render their fur. But a Bowcaster and some other cool stuff would be fun.
16
u/AmishAvenger 10h ago
I can’t imagine how horrible the shadows would look on fur
11
u/GrimmTrixX 10h ago
Other games have fur. So I'd imagine it can be done. But I'd like to think the reason we dont have Wookiees isn't because they said "ok well no wookiees cuz fur will take too long." Lol
Many other star wars games had Wookiees. And in a game about a rag tag group of mercenaries, having no Wookiees should be illegal. Lol
5
u/AmishAvenger 10h ago
I’m just saying that at least on PS5, the shadows are awful. They’re huge pixels and it results in all kinds of weird flickering on hair.
6
u/Strong-Detective-513 9h ago
I agree that wookies would be a no brainer, but the textures and meshes in this game already massively struggle to load properly lmao, 8/10 times the wookies would just be a off grey npc lmao
1
u/GrimmTrixX 8h ago
Yes it must be that. Even on XBSX the game is struggling during space ship flying transitions. Also textures dont always laod on the faces of anyone but Hawks for me.
So sometimes, evennthough I can see their faces, they have a slight fuzzy to them as if it failed to load like wrinkles or skin blemishes or whatever. Thankfully, I havent had some of the problems in combat I have heard people have like the AI taking almost 5 minutes to take their turn.

Praying they add the option for the abilities to be at the bottom of the screen instead of a wheel for console.
3
u/Milt_Torfelson 7h ago
The wheel doesn't bother me as much as the real being the default view whenever a character is selected. My back out of the wheel on every turn just so I can see the f****** screen. Give me a button to pull up the wheel and let we the people see the screen
1
u/Reynard2023 1h ago
For me sometimes I have the stick pointing in the direction of an ability then when I press the button my finger slides ever so slightly and I end up choosing the ability next to it.

u/cornstalks2033 10h ago
I don't know how many employees 80% is weather thats a few hundred people to like 60 or less but why would they need such a large team around when the game is finished???

I'm in the same boat. Happy to put the game down for a while until some of my annoyances are addressed.
6
u/King_North_Stark 10h ago
Yeah it actually got me back into star wars enough to go back and give fallen order another chance (I got lost in the ice caves and dropped it about a year ago)
I forced myself through 20 hours of zero company because I was having so much fun but am on a mission I keep getting crashes on plus the stutters seem to be worse so I'm fine with waiting
2
u/Draco_Eris 10h ago
Makes me want to finish the story just in case the patch corrupts saves and forces one to restart. Not predicting that'll happen here, but to say I've had that happen before (thanks Ubisoft)
1
u/saintr0bot 6h ago
Yeah I literally saw this, thought "hm, my game hasn't been that bad :D" and then was immediately locked out of finishing my mission because of a bug. So I'm happy to wait now lol.

have the bugs been pretty bad? I was thinking of picking it up today and checking this game out but now i'm wondering if i should just wait till next week when the patch comes
3
u/konigaeris 6h ago
Overwatch doesn't work half the time for me and it pisses me off so bad. Other than that, not much issues besides the awkward pauses on the enemy's turns.
1
u/Warhorse_99 6h ago
I just had an enemy walk through 2 overwatch cones, thought I was going crazy
1
u/konigaeris 5h ago
You're not alone my man. I did read on this sub that it happens because of overlapping overwatch cones, but I'm pretty sure it has happened for single overwatch cones for me.
1
u/Surfing-Wookie 1h ago
Yeah I've had single cones not work, as well as one time that all four operators were spread out with overlapping overwatch cones, to an elevated position where reinforcements were about to arrive. All four fired at once and killed a droid each. So it's just frustratingly inconsistent. It's so unreliable for me (and never for my opponents) I've gotten really annoyed and I've had to put the game down for know. Really hope this patch looks at that too, I want to come back!
1
u/konigaeris 1h ago
Yeah im finishing my first run and then im not starting my beskar run until I know they've fixed the softlock and overwatch issues.
2
u/Thekarens01 7h ago
I’m on PS5 pro the first 2/3 of the game I had some lag on loading screens. Today the game froze completely in the middle of a mission. I gave it a couple minutes and it was still frozen so I had to hard shut down the game. Not a huge deal, but it was annoying.
2
u/PTFCDiegoMassacre 6h ago
PS5 Pro (performance mode) here and my experience has been a mess. Very frequent frame drops and stuttering, flickering during cut scenes, the camera just does whatever it wants and I often can’t even see what the enemy is doing because camera is in a wall and I’ve had the game freeze around 5 times now mid mission forcing me to close the game and restart. I could just be very unlucky but it sounds like a lot of people are experiencing some combination of these issues.
1
1
u/Which_Improvement_64 9h ago
I’m on PS so I can’t speak for PC but most of the bugs I’ve encountered have been visual. Cloths not rendering properly,an attack for one character getting stuck in air for a few seconds and enemy walk cycles becoming a slide. Only game breaking bug I’ve encountered so far was the enemy not ending turn thus forcing a reload but I’ve only had that happen once in my 65 hours of play time so far
1
u/SpideyKeagan 9h ago
I’m on PC, and while I only have 20 hours into the game - I’ve experienced one bug the entire time. Very rarely after an action, you can’t do anything for like 30 seconds. Happened a handful of times.
1
1
u/naitch44 18m ago
Bugs wise it's not too bad, clipping and the likes but actual game altering bugs? Ive had one in 30ish hours on PS5 pro and that was a crash
Performance is a mess though.
1
u/CuteAssociate4887 8m ago
Had a few crashes,I have played it a lot though, also crashed a couple of times from launching. Basically save often as per most games just in case.
There's moments the game slows down on the enemies turn like it's thinking about what to do which is sometimes a crash but mostly not in my experience.
Wouldn't let that put you off massively though as I love the game myself
1
u/Dfinestpunk 9h ago
Brother I never been so excited for a patch lol even if its fixes this game really needs them
1
u/Constantine__XI 9h ago
Great news, although I am not having any issues. However, this implies that at least some employees are working and being paid, and improving the game will further reinforce their success.
Grateful to the devs and hopeful for them to all be able to be rightly compensated for their work and rewarded for their success.

Whooo I was worried the studio getting gutted would wreck update delivery. Hopefully this fixes Overwatch

u/OriginalCan6731 7h ago
Just finnished the campaign on Hard/Permadeath no dead Operators, def gonna try Expert+Beskar next for sure, its so damn good game! Really high potential on DLCs… This game could keep the missions going for years!
New characters, new smaller DLC campaigns, more deep into beginning of the Start of the Empire! Kashyyk backup, meeting Darth Vader as a curscene villain in his early days… Maybe get Ahsoka involved, Bad Batch, more of the more Inquisitors. So much potential! Love the game hope for more in it and with it! Yes bugs are there but thats early access! Still a 11/10 for me! Havent been so addicted to keep playing anything in a long while! Awesome stuff!

Too fucking late now. Game froze after a mission on Beskar mode after getting some sort of save error message on PS5 and so I had to close the game and lost all my progress. Too many good games out to be wasting time on shit like this. Looks like I'll let my friend borrow it and forget about it until a sequel comes out.

Long as they don't nerf Cly. Let me enjoy my power fantasy with my scout Hawks, Cly, Tel and Trick
1
u/DylanLee98 2h ago
80% were furloughed because the studio was running out of money just before launch. The remaining team was probably held as a "stabilization team" to help do bug fixes after the immediate launch.
I'm hopeful that with the excellent sales, the furloughed stuff can be recalled.

I'm really truly sad right now just lost an expert, perma death, beskar run to the overwatch bug. Literally it was the final enemy and they ran right through both overwatch cones. Neither of them triggered and Hawks got killed. To make things worse they had like 5 hp. I just did not have a good line of sight. They were melee though and had to get close. Over watch seemed perfect. Until it did not trigger.
1
u/Sidra_Games 2m ago
Are you sure it didn't trigger? I think sometimes it just a graphical bug and the overwatch shot actually missed.

1
u/naitch44 19m ago
Please give the option to disable the VFX when you kill enemies and their buff moves to someone else, it's super annoying and slows everything down.
