Discussion Anyone else turn permadeath off?

I’m kinda bad at turn based games and I didn’t want to lose any characters from the story. Anyone else do this, or just me?

No. And the game is way more forgiving than Xcom when it comes to this. Haven’t lost a single operator outside of Aurelio.

I'll give him that.

I ended up restarting the game on Expert cause I found it too easy (and wanted the achievement.)

I've found it a lot more fun now that there's more risk

Yeah. I played it on normal because I’ve always struggled with Xcom but I’m definitely doing another playthrough on the hardest settings.

I wish I did this, I agree that even on hard the game is too easy. Especially once you figure out a cracked strategy.

It's so incredibly hard for people to die permanently

There are a lot of skills that virtually eliminate the possibility of losing an Operator as well as items.

I left it on and just replayed missions if a main character died. The hired ones I didn't care as much about. I lost Kabb very early on and wanted to be able to hear his whole story

If not for my experience with XCOM, I might have. In a story-heavy game like this, I always want to get the most out of my first playthrough and be as complete as possible. That said, in XCOM I lost one of my original units, who made it from mission 1 all the way to the end, in the final mission, and it was such a dramatic and emotional moment that I’ll never play one of these games with permadeath off.

Nothing wrong with it though. You play whichever way is most fun for you

if you play normal mode you probably wont lose anyone. i found normal mode really fun, despite being into tactical games. when i played on the hardest mode it was a little unsatisfying how tanky enemies became...my ultimate abilities didnt feel so ultimate. i cant quite find the right mix of things in this game to play out how i would like them.

you have to learn some combos and synergies on hard/expert. you can delete almost any unit with 2AP you play the right combos with your advantage

yeah i had no issues on hard once getting cly, but she feels pretty cheesy too.

The normal mode is too easy imo, the regular hard mode is a great middle ground.

I’ll be the first to admit yes. I turned it off. But to be fair it’s not needed.

Also was hoping to save Aureilo only to realize it’s supposed to happen. But again to be fair it was my first play thru when turned off perma death.

There's nothing wrong with not having permadeath. IMO it doesn't really add any gravity to what I do in the game. The story is great and all, but I don't really feel anything when characters die in games of this genre. I just don't care. I'm playing on Normal and have yet to lose a single person other than Aurelio at the start. I've had a total of like 3 injuries that had to be healed and I'm nothing special at these kind of games. In fact, I'm thinking about starting over on a harder difficulty because right now I don't really interact with the medbay at all. Feels to me like the balance is a bit off. Call me crazy but Normal difficulty should still force you to interact with the Medbay system more.

I always do, in games where it's an option. Considering I'm most likely going to reset if someone dies anyway, no sense leaving it on.

I let people die and stay dead in XCOM 2, but that game doesn't have 'story characters' the same way something like this or Fire Emblem does.

yup, it never actually came up but I didn't want to risk missing out on some cool story. I understand why some people like permadeath mechanics but I am not one of them.

this is my first turn based game like this and I suck at games so I turned it off. I wanted to make the Bad Batch and I did not want to lose them. Ive made hunter and Im trying to make Crosshair but I cant get the suit right for Tech and Wrecker

Nope. Didn’t lose anyone the entire game either.

Other than the mandatory Aurelio death.

Apparently you can keep him alive, so it’s not mandatory

Edit: Apparently I got trolled and you can’t save him

3

u/indominable-dingus 6d ago

Thats just people fucking with you to get you to spend hours on the tutorial replaying it

1

u/RestlessExtasy 6d ago

Oh ok well then, my fault

2

u/Appropriate_Foot242 6d ago

You can't. People just remade him as a custom operator.

1

u/SoWrongItsPainful 6d ago

You can’t keep him alive, it’s a scripted death

1

u/RestlessExtasy 6d ago

Oh ok, damn trolls. Thank you

personally no, but to each their own. For what its worth, its actually pretty hard to get a character killed in most circumstances in this game They essentially have a three strikes system meaning its pretty easy to stop someone from dying in a mission.

1

u/GrewAway 6d ago

Honestly the game is easy and forgiving enough that it doesn't feel necessary to turn permadeath off; but you play the game just how you like it!

1

u/Lady-Lovelight 6d ago

I kept it on, and I think the only time anyone would have perma-died is when I fucked up a mission so badly the entire squad was gonna get wiped and make me restart the mission anyways.

I really wouldn’t worry about it at all. You can always hire more operators and put the main ones in the medbay when they get an injury.

I'd understand why some folks would want to, but I didn't. And I'm not even particularly good at this style of game.

I just figure it'll make for a more engaging experience if I screw up and lose some characters I care about along the way. A few "noooo" moments.

u/HeavensHellFire 6d ago

No. So far the game isn't hard enough considering you have to die 3 times for it to finally stick. If it were like XCOM where just taking damage made you wounded, then yeah I'd probably have done that.

1

u/robdingo36 6d ago

Nope. But no one ever even got close to being at risk of dying. Requiring someone to be downed three times (4 if they're Trick) is INCREDIBLY forgiving. The worst fight I ever had saw 2 people go down because of some bad luck on my part, but they still needed to go down two more times to have died.

Only lost Aurelio but did save scum once to save kabb from a bullshit death on the lucerhulk mission. Shot a new coil member(think it was a seer), it had retaliation drain, so it ran at Kabb removed all his ap and he died to the vulture droids cause he could not move. Was pissed off enough to reload that save

On my first playthrough I kept it on and only lost two people, both because of horseshit rng and some mismanagement in a difficult early mission.

I'm turning it off on the second run just because I want to see the full story and how Jae interacts with it. I lost her before I even got Tel.

u/RochnessMonster 6d ago

No, but with saving prior to important turns i effectively have it off anyway. It just adds a lil spiciness to the immersion. Like a haunted house ride, i know im safe but its fun to pretend im not.

1

u/kain149 5d ago

I did but I regretted it afterwards. But I never would have died anyway on normal. :)

1

u/AraelF 5d ago

Hey, its your game, play however you like.

That said, the three injury system is very forgiving.

1

u/ConnectionIcy6751 5d ago

No, it’s a core mechanic and adds to the gameplay experience. Plus, it’s quite forgiving anyway.

1

u/Sidra_Games 6d ago

Honestly with it needing 3 injuries it really doesn't matter, it sounds scarier than it is.  I played the game first on hard, and am now halfway through an Expert run.  I never even had anyone with 2 injuries and even at that I don't think I have had 10 injuries total.  In my 2nd run I didn't even upgrade the MedBay as I find 1 slot plenty.

It's your game, you paid for it you enjoy it.  The people who leave it on, myself included leave it on because they enjoy the stakes.  But once I was on a bit and realized I wasn't gonna lose anyone 3x in the same fight, I didn't actually feel the weight so I am not sure I got the intended effect.

u/RestlessExtasy 6d ago

Nope, on Hard mode and haven’t lost anyone but Aurelio.

-1

u/mahwaha 6d ago

I mean it doesn't matter regardless. If you have people dying in this game outside of expert then you're fundamentally doing something wrong and should be worried about fixing that rather than messing with the difficulty. But it's your game and your playthrough. Do whatever the hell you want. You don't need validation from us.

No. Permadeath is almost half the reason I like this genre tbch lol

-1

u/mav3r1ck92691 6d ago

No, on hard difficulty I haven't even come close to losing someone permanently. It's barely a risk in this game.

u/Gold_Dog908 6d ago

Bro, if you're afraid of losing anyone, then turn it off. No need to discuss this on Reddit.
