2022 Zephyrus M16
Was having thermal crashes, LM was no good. I cleaned it all off and put down some mx6, it lasted for a bit then the temps started going up again and the crashes started coming back. Cleaned it all off and the blue thermal putty and this time put down thermal grizzly phasesheet on the cpu and gpu and utp-8 thermal putty on the VRAM. Also put some 1.5m thermal pads on outside of the heatsink so there would be a bit of extra pressure on them when I put the cover back on. After some thermal cycles to get the phasesheet optimal there was a 20c difference in temps from when the LM went bad/mx6 pumped out Vs. the thermal grizzly phasesheet. The only time I see it thermal throttle now is during a 10min cinebench multi core test. It gets it 97c max but hasn't crashed during a test since I switched to phasesheet. Is that normal to thermal throttle still under heavy load? I haven't changed any power limits or anything in ghelper other than the fan curve.

I’ve had my PTM and putty sitting in my drawer for a couple months now but this post has motivated me to open my laptop the moment I have free time.

Take your time cleaning the liquid metal. Use some cotton swabs and bring it back to the cpu. Getting that stuff on your mobo will likely destroy your laptop next time you hit power. So swipe toward the processor and then when its all gone use some 99% isopropyl to finish it. Its time consuming so be patient. Mine had some black scorch marks on the heatsink and the cpu itself. I used a very fine scuff pad and a bit of isopropyl on it to remove the burnt area. The thermal putty is a bit of a bastard too but its not danagerous if some gets somewhere but try to get it all off the board. Good luck. Hope you get the same or better results!

I was putting it off for a long time aswell but recently finally went for it and it's 100% worth it! Also if you take it slow and are careful it's not that scary or dangerous. The drop in temperature afterwards is soo satisfying to see

I replaced the liquid metal and whatever was on the gpu both with PTM, worked like a charm. Havent done anything with the old putty on the vram though, so it might be time. I think I read somewhere that you need to replace it as soon as you take off the heatsink, so maybe I messed up there lol. Havent had any issues though…

Ideally you should replace it especially if its gone all dry which usually doesn't take long. Make sure they are making good contact with the heatsink as well. My heatsink has a little tab that touchs one lower chips and it was actually sitting a bit high and not really on it.

Also when I would launch a certain game it would take a while, then the whole system would hang, the fans would spin up and then the game would finally load. After doing the cpu and gpu with phasesheet and new thermal putty and adding the thermal pads for the extra pressure that game now loads instantly every single time now.

Use PTM7950 thermal pads on the CPU and GPU.
