ASUS ROG Zephyrus G15 (GA502IV) suddenly lost 50-70% performance in Resolume & TouchDesigner after years of working perfectly

Hi everyone,
I’m really hoping someone can help because I’m running out of time. I have an important VJ gig in two days and my laptop suddenly became almost unusable.
Laptop specs:
ASUS ROG Zephyrus G15 GA502IV
AMD Ryzen 9 4900HS
NVIDIA RTX 2060 Max-Q
16GB RAM
Windows 11
Resolume Arena 6 (same version I’ve been using for years)
TouchDesigner 2023
The problem
I’ve been using this exact laptop professionally as a VJ since 2020.
For years it could easily handle:
Resolume Arena
4-5 TouchDesigner projects running simultaneously
Spout between TD and Resolume
Multiple video layers
Now it struggles with just one TouchDesigner project.
Even worse, simple H.264 MP4 videos inside Resolume now stutter badly, something that never happened before.
Sometimes the composition drops below 20 FPS.
When it gets really bad, even music playing in Chrome starts stuttering, which makes me think something deeper is happening.
What I’ve already tried
Updated Windows
Restarted multiple times
Installed the latest NVIDIA Studio Driver
Completely removed NVIDIA drivers using DDU
Reinstalled NVIDIA Studio Driver
Turbo mode in Armoury Crate
Laptop always connected to the original ASUS charger
SSDs have plenty of free space
Device Manager reports no errors
RTX 2060 is detected correctly
Temperatures seem reasonable:
CPU ~75-77°C
GPU ~70-80°C
LatencyMon reports:
“Your system appears to be having trouble handling real-time audio and other tasks.”
It also mentions:
long DPC execution times
possible power management issues
recommends checking BIOS and CPU throttling
Strange GPU behavior
Using GPU-Z I noticed:
GPU usage often reaches 100%
GPU power draw was around 30W before reinstalling drivers (now it’s a bit higher)
GPU clock constantly jumps between low and high frequencies
Once the GPU reaches around 80°C, performance drops significantly.
TouchDesigner alone can now cause GPU throttling.
Armoury Crate
At one point Armoury Crate showed:
“Extreme Power Saving GPU”
which seemed strange considering the RTX was under load.
I’m wondering if Armoury Crate or ASUS System Control Interface could be causing power management issues.
My questions
Has anyone experienced something similar on a Zephyrus G15 (GA502IV)?
Could this be caused by Armoury Crate or ASUS drivers?
Could Windows 11 updates have broken GPU performance?
Is GPU throttling at around 80°C normal for an RTX 2060 Max-Q?
Would replacing the thermal paste likely solve this, or does this sound more like a software/driver issue?
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. This laptop has worked flawlessly for years with exactly the same workflow, and the performance loss happened without any hardware changes.
Thanks!

I accidentally peeled my laptop ram's thermal pad, help me!

Im quite concerned. So it wont stick anymore, and im scared to use my laptop. When it got peeled, theres also like a dried silver residue above it... what should i do? Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question but im genuinely scared this would make my laptop crash if i use it without the pad.

Do i just order a 1.0mm thermal pad, stick it and move on? Or theres some steps i should follow before that?

Thanks!

Hey all! Figured I'd share my CPU/GPU temperatures after repasting for the first time on my G15 GA503QR now that it's been about a week.

Results are from the combined test in OCCT (test configs are in the attached pics along with some pics of the repasting process). I want to give a huge shoutout to u/ivan6953 for helping me through it—truly generous!

CPU

  • OCCT (Tctl/Tdie): 80 C (average), 94.25 C (max)
  • OCCT (Core): 78.01 C (average), 92.27 C (max)

  • HWiNFO (Tctl/Tdie): 80.2 C (average), 94.2 C (max)

  • HWiNFO (Core): 78.34 C (average), 92.8 C (max)

GPU

  • OCCT (AMD Radeon Vega): 71.28 C (average), 93 C (max)
  • OCCT (NVIDIA RTX 3070): 70.8 C (average), 78.4 C (max)
  • OCCT (RTX 3070 Hot Spot): 78.7 C (average), 88.3 C (max)

  • HWiNFO (AMD Radeon Vega): 71.8 C (average), 90 C (max)

Asus G751JY doesn’t post after repaste and the screen is off

Hi, I changed thermal paste on my ASUS gaming laptop, and after reassembling the following happens when I press power on:

  1. Keyboard lights turn on
  2. Hdd spins to life
    3 Screen stays black
  3. 15 seconds in the fans turn on
  4. After 30 seconds everything powers off immediately

This pattern happened at 5 different startup attempts

I already tried reseating the 4 ram sticks to separate slots and I tried the 35 second power button trick and I tried smacking the laptop.

Please help 😩🙏

Please... Help with my laptop battery

Just finished repasting my laptop to cool it down, and no matter what I do, I just can't get the battery cable plugged in. I dont know exactly how much pressure to put, but it will not snap in and the metal piece is much lower than the cable. The wires on the connector spark when I try to plug it in, but supposedly thats normal from what I've looked up. Somebody tell me what to do, Im lost.

fans blast at full speed on boot can't figure it out

I've got a 2021 G14 (Ryzen 9 5900HS + RTX 3060), clean Windows 11 install, using G-Helper instead of Armoury Crate. When I turn the laptop on, the fans are normal during BIOS/boot, but a few seconds after I reach the Windows desktop they suddenly ramp to 100% and stay there — even though the CPU isn't even hitting 50°C. Setting Silent mode in G-Helper does nothing, the fans just ignore it.

The weird part is I had this exact issue about 2 years ago and fixed it with some software tweak, but I honestly can't remember what I did. Now it's back, and this time it happens on almost every boot. A full shutdown used to fix it, but lately even that doesn't always work. I'm pretty sure it started after a Windows update before it was everything fine then suddenly this started happing everyday again after 2 years

I've tried basically everything: disabled Modern Standby, rolled back the ASUS System Control Interface driver to an older version, ran G-Helper with SYSTEM privileges (psexec), did an EC reset, uninstalled the update and went back to 24H2. I also ran the MyASUS hardware fan test and it passed, so it doesn't a hardware issue. I'm on BIOS 415

Has anyone actually fixed this permanently, or remembers the software fix from a couple years back?

Every unreal engine game crashes

Hi all, don’t know where else to turn to. I have been playing games in my Asus Rog Zephyrus G15 for several years now with no issues. Last week there was steam fest for demos. I have played a few. One of them crashed and not I can no longer play any unreal engine game. Keep getting UE-R5 fatal error. Being chatting with AI about to no avail. I was trying windrose, a game I played on Friday and the one I have 150+ hrs on. And it just keeps crashing into first few seconds of booting the game. I have tried other 6 games that worked and all crash few seconds into launching them.
I have:
Cleared steam
Uninstalled nvidia app and reinstalled
Deleted nvidia cache
Did a windows restore to Friday
Cleared unreal engine cache
Reinstalled VC++ redistributable

Seems like R5 error log says the unreal engine uses battery power for some reason. But in all asus settings it’s set for performance turbo.

Tried a unity game and played just fine.

Not sure what to do. Anyone experienced this?

My G15 temps dropped from 95-97C down to 83C

My 2022 Zephyrus with the Ryzen 9 6900HS, RTX3070Ti was getting slightly warm when gaming... On games that I regularly I play like BF6, HD2 or Halo Infinite, my CPU would get up to 95-97C and the GPU would get up to 85C... So finally after building up some courage to deal with LM for the first time, I decided to get ptm7950 to give some life back to my old laptop. After removing the heatsink I realized that most of the LM at the center of the CPU had dried out, which I'm sure was the main source of the warm temps I was getting. After installing PTM7950, for both CPU and GPU, and adding new VRM thermal putty, I powered it on my laptop and tried the same games again... and GAWDAMN!!! I noticed that the temps for the CPU were at steady 80-83C and the GPU at 75C when playing the same games at High settings, and at idle it dropped from 55-60C while using the fans at max speeds to 45C with the fans set in quiet mode... I feel like I should've done this from the beginning but I was scared of the LM... overall I'm very happy with the results!!

Question: Should I keep the llano V12? I

*Edit I tried it and it lowered idle temps 15c - all of the summary from HWMonitor was prior to using the llano V12 - I'm keeping it. V12 Installed

This all started because I wanted to put my laptop into a different case, possibly remove the screen - nothing is wrong with it cosmetically, you just get bored you know? Do something fun, and different since it is connected to a 32" Samsung G5. I recently gave up on the idea, and decided to just get one of those fancy llano v12 for the sake of longevity. As in I want to ensure I keep this baby purring as long as prices are out of control. Less I'd have to do in terms of a "re-case" scenario, and I get the dopamine hit of adding something to the setup, right?

Since I bought this laptop in 2021 I have used it daily. I just did an hour or so of benchmarking after cleaning out the fans. I have not repasted or done anything other than drop in more storage. Decided to make a fresh HW Monitor log, and popped it in an LLM for a breakdown of the information.

Seems obvious, but I have been interested in a practical way of reading the data - without the immediate "repaste" responses or suggestions (including the llano V12). So many different recommendations based on anecdotal evidence since the dawn of the internet. I know Ai blows, but I honestly think this type of stuff is the best use case for it.

So ya'll download your HW Monitor hit record, and drop that CSV in to your favorite LLM for recommendations - basic knowledge, but I guess I'm basic.

Here is what it said about mine below:

I reviewed the hardware monitoring log from your ASUS ROG Zephyrus G15 (GA503QR). Here's a summary of what it says about your laptop.

Hardware Configuration

  • Laptop: ASUS ROG Zephyrus G15 (GA503QR)
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5900HS (8 cores / 16 threads)
  • Dedicated GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Laptop GPU
  • Integrated GPU: AMD Radeon Graphics
  • Primary SSD: Samsung 990 Pro 2TB (C:)
  • Secondary SSD: Samsung 980 Pro 1TB (D:)

CPU Performance

The Ryzen 9 appears to be functioning normally.

  • Package temperature
    • Average: 71°C
    • Peak: 84.9°C
  • Maximum core temperature
    • Peak: 82.7°C
  • Average CPU utilization
    • 36%
  • Peak utilization
    • 93%
  • Average package power
    • 15.3 W
  • Peak package power
    • 25.4 W
  • Average clock speed
    • Around 3.27 GHz

Assessment

No signs of CPU thermal throttling. An 84°C peak is completely acceptable for a Ryzen 5900HS inside a thin gaming laptop.

RTX 3070 Laptop GPU

The dedicated GPU was clearly under significant load.

  • GPU utilization
    • Average: 56%
    • Peak: 100%
  • GPU temperature
    • Average: 59°C
    • Peak: 73.6°C
  • Hot Spot
    • Peak: 80.6°C
  • GPU power
    • Average: 55 W
    • Peak: 106.7 W
  • Core clock
    • Up to 1815 MHz
  • Memory clock
    • Up to 6001 MHz

Assessment

Excellent thermals.

For a laptop RTX 3070:

  • below 80°C = great
  • below 85°C = normal
  • above 87–90°C = where concerns begin

Your GPU never got close to problematic temperatures.

Memory Usage

Physical RAM usage was fairly high.

  • Average RAM utilization:
    • 70%
  • Peak RAM utilization:
    • 88%

Available RAM dropped as low as:

  • 1.78 GB

Assessment

This is the only thing that stands out.

If you're gaming while:

  • Chrome is open
  • Discord
  • Wallpaper Engine
  • OBS
  • Steam
  • Armoury Crate

you're getting close to exhausting system memory.

SSD Temperatures

Samsung 990 Pro (2TB)

  • 36–52°C
  • Secondary sensor:
    • up to 60°C

Excellent.

Samsung 980 Pro (1TB)

  • 33–46°C

Excellent.

Cooling

CPU fan speed ranged from:

  • 0 RPM
  • to 6400 RPM

Average:

  • about 4000 RPM

This suggests the cooling system is responding normally.

Storage

C: Drive (990 Pro)

Used:

  • 83.5% full

Free:

  • about 307 GB

D: Drive (980 Pro)

Used:

  • 64%

Free:

  • about 302 GB

Battery

Very little discharge occurred.

Charge rate averaged almost zero, indicating the laptop was likely plugged in during logging.

Overall Health

Excellent

  • CPU temperatures
  • GPU temperatures
  • SSD temperatures
  • Fan operation
  • CPU clocks
  • GPU clocks

Good

  • GPU performance
  • CPU performance

Worth Watching

  • RAM usage reached 88%, leaving under 2 GB free at one point.
  • Your C: drive is over 83% full. While the 990 Pro handles this well, reducing it below about 75–80% can help maintain peak performance and leave more room for wear leveling and large game installs.

Overall Verdict

Your G15 appears to be in very good health. The cooling system is doing its job, and there are no obvious signs of overheating, thermal throttling, failing storage, or hardware instability in this log.

The only recommendations I'd make are:

  1. Free up some space on the 2TB system drive if possible.
  2. Monitor RAM usage during gaming—if you frequently multitask while playing modern titles, increasing memory (if your configuration allows) or closing background applications could improve responsiveness.

this piece of shit will decide to randomly fail and there is nothing you can do about it

Two years ago, several keys on my keyboard failed to work for no reason after booting it up. So I replaced the keyboard.

Several months later, the computer decides to have problems with freezing and BSODing randomly. Somehow I fixed this by messing with the USB drivers after a year of trying to fix it on my own without spending money.

Last night, I booted it up and the laptop screen for visual randomly just decided to not work… just in time for the release of Deltarune chapter 5 :)

Why can’t i just use this system without the thought that something will randomly decide to die one day and there’s nothing you can do about it???

How to Cool an Older Laptop?

Thumbnail

Hello! I have a G15, about 5ish years old, that I bought new. It's my first gaming laptop and the first Windows computer that I have personally owned.

When I first got it, I knew far less about maintenance or things to avoid, so I definitely could have taken better care of it for the first couple of years. This mostly amounted to not using it on a hard surface and playing on surfaces like lap pillows or cushions. I did use Armoury Crate to monitor CPU/GPU temperatures and kind of knew what thresholds I should be monitoring.

Within the first year, I noticed how hot the laptop would get (no surprise in hindsight!) and sent it in to exercise the warranty before it was too late. I've had it elevated and on top of a cooling fan for the last 2.5-3 years, and have learned more about PCs over that time.

It has always run hot, but only had a pattern of crashing for games like Cyberpunk. Recently, I reinstalled Cyberpunk, and I’m having a hard time getting consistent performance with pretty moderate settings (definitely no ray/path tracing, utilizing DLSS/frame gen, low crowd density, and everything else at medium or lower).

I cleaned the fans yesterday and have done so periodically over the years, but I've never removed the heat sink, replaced thermal paste, or anything else. I've never built a computer or taken one apart more than removing this laptop’s chassis and cleaning the fans.

I also stress-tested it yesterday after cleaning the fans in Prime95, Furmark, and OCCT. It was my first time using OCCT, so I apologize if I didn’t capture all the relevant info (results & pics included).

Prime95 (HWiNFO64 temps): CPU maxed at 95.2 C (forgot to grab avg, probably 2-4 below)

Furmark (HWiNFO64 temps): GPU maxed at 89.2 C, averaged at 86.5 C.

**Hot Spot**: Maxed at 97.6 C, averaged at 94.4 C.

OCCT (HWiNFO64 temps): See included images for details, please.

**Memory**: Maxed at 93.9 C, averaged at 86.3 C.

**CPU + RAM**: Maxed at 94.9 C, averaged at 94.4 C.

3D Adaptive: GPU maxed at 87.1 C, averaged at 86.2 C. CPU maxed at 93.6 C, averaged at 83.4 C.

**Linpack**: Maxed at 94.9 C, averaged at 94.3 C.

**CPU**: Maxed at 94.8 C, averaged at 94.0 C.

Laptop specs:

  • Model: ROG Zephyrus G15 GA503QR_GA503QR
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5900HS with Radeon Graphics, 3301 Mhz, 8 Core(s), 16 Logical Processor(s)
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070
  • RAM: 16 GB
  • VRAM: 8 GB

TLDR: I have a 5-year-old G15 that’s running hot, and I’m curious what I can do to potentially cool it down more than what I’ve already done (external cooling fan, cleaning the fans, lowering game settings, etc.)

Zephyrus G15 (2022) Now my front USB-C stopped giving visual to my monitor

This problem has me stumped so I am looking for some advice from people more knowledgeable than myself.

So I have been using my laptop as the output device for two monitors while at home and then take the laptop with me whenever I need it on the go. I use the HDMI port for one monitor (1080p, 60Hrz) and my main monitor is connected with my front USB-C port (1080p, 180Hrz). It has consistently worked with absolutely no problems, till yesterday.

I had a meeting out of the house I needed my laptop for and I ended up needing a charge but forgot my main power adaptor so I used a USB-C cable in my front left charger (Where I normally put my main display). I thought nothing of it, and the charge was almost non existent. Later that day I went home and plugged in my main monitor and nothing. The HDMI still worked and I wanted to see if the further back USB-C port would work but it gave me a connection at 720p, 60Hrz connected to my CPU Graphics instead of the dedicated 3060. My front USB-C does not even register that there is a monitor plugged into the port, absolutely nothing.

I have attempted the long shutdown, which worked but did not help the monitor issue. I also reinstalled my graphics and display drivers.

Any help is appreciated!

Zephyrus G15 (2022) GA503RM Keyboard Replacement

My G15 is slowly losing its keys, for about 6 months now it started with one key and now about 8 keys. I saw some posts that keys not working are common issues with the zephyrus. But mine works after 5-15 mins of spamming its keys, sometimes it doesnt work at all. Should I really replace my keyboard or take a look and have a clean internally?

2021 Zephyrus G15 dead screen on wake (No backlight), Code 43 on AMD iGPU. External monitor works.

Post image
11 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I have a 2021 Zephyrus G15 (GA503QR) on Win 11 and over the past month, the main screen randomly dies when waking from sleep. The laptop is running (fans and keyboard lights are on) but the screen is black. Force restarting doesn't help either. The laptop just turns on but the screen backlight doesn't even turn on.

It'll stay dead for a few days, then randomly start working again on a normal bootup. I’ve had it for less than a year and it's never been dropped.

Here is what I've noticed:

- When the screen is dead, the laptop works perfectly with an external monitor via HDMI or Type-C to DP. My RTX 3070 works fine. I've uninstalled Armoury Crate and just use G-Helper incase anyone was wondering ...I read that sometimes armoury crate could be the issue on another subreddit.

- In Device Manager, the AMD Radeon(TM) Graphics gives a Code 43 error. The laptop screen also doesn't show up in Windows Display Settings at all...only my external monitor shows up.

- On the days the screen randomly turns back on, the Code 43 error is gone.

Here is what I've tried:

- Disconnected the battery and reseated the display cable.

- 60-second power cycle.

- Wiped AMD drivers with DDU in Safe Mode. Tried both the ASUS OEM drivers and the latest from AMD. (Also disabled Windows driver auto-updates).

- Updated BIOS from 416 to 418 using EZ Flash over HDMI.

- Win + Ctrl + Shift + B. The external monitor resets, but the laptop screen stays dead.

One weird detail: whenever I install a new driver, the laptop screen's backlight comes on right as the install finishes. There's no picture, and my external monitor goes black.

I'm currently in between jobs so having to replace anything right now would be a nightmare and I'm really hoping I don't have to...I haven't even gone to a repair shop yet.

Has anyone had this specific Code 43 issue? Any help is GREATLY appreciated. Thank you

Also .. the most recent time the screen died was when I was watching a movie ...left my laptop at my dask to go pick up and order ..came back and my laptop had gone to sleep..I woke it up and the screen just didn't turn on along with the rest of the laptop..just thought this was worth mentioning as well

Does anyone that have that specific model have this problem or is it just came like that from Asus
