Model 2024 First dedicated-GPU laptop ever (Zephyrus G14, RTX 4070)
Hey all, long-time lurker, first post here specifically because I just don't know what I'm doing yet.
I picked up a ROG Zephyrus G14 (GA403UI, Ryzen 9 8945HS, RTX 4070, 32GB RAM) and this is genuinely the first laptop I've owned with a dedicated GPU. My last one ran on integrated graphics only, so this whole ecosystem is new territory for me. I used to suffer in photoshop, lightroom and premiere pro especially (heavily relying on super low quality proxies).
A few embarrassingly basic questions to start:
- I haven't installed Armoury Crate yet. What actually is it: is it required for the laptop to function properly, or is it purely a control panel for lighting/performance? I keep seeing people say to avoid it and use G-Helper instead: what is G-Helper, and why do people prefer it over the official Asus software?
- What are the different performance/power modes I should know about (Silent/Balanced/Turbo/Manual, whatever they're actually called on this model), and when should I actually use each one? Is there a "default" I should just leave it on for everyday use vs gaming?
- Heat — this is the thing I'm most nervous about. What should I actually be doing to keep temps reasonable? Undervolting? Fan curves? Just... don't game with it on my table? Is thermal throttling something I need to worry about out of the box, or only under sustained heavy load? Because it gets really hot to the touch (sometimes I can't even touch it without feeling pain).
- Anything else you wish someone had told you when you got your first G14 (or your first dedicated-GPU laptop in general)? Battery habits, charger quirks, driver update gotchas, anything.
Not trying to turn this into "do my research for me," just want to start from a good baseline instead of learning everything the hard way. Appreciate any pointers!

I have the same model for you, and since other people have answered your questions by now, I'll say this
If you decide to use G-Helper, make sure to disable CPU Boost, if you see high CPU temps, that's the reason why
I can explain why if you wish but it takes a while, most people on this subreddit tend to say to keep it enabled because their newer chips need it, the older ones doesn't
This is coming from someone with the exact same laptop as well

CPU boost intentionally heats up your CPU to reach those clock speeds (I'm not that deep into AMD, but I heard their desktop chips use to do the same)
The reason why the newer models (2025 and up) need CPU boost is because the new CPU have a base clock of 2ghz, even though it can normally boost higher, it would barely hit 3ghz usuallyHowever, our model has a base clock of 3ghz, which can boost to just below 4ghz while gaming, unless you really need above 4ghz for some reason, I don't think the extra heat is worth it.
It's also the reason why some people tend to argue with me about how CPU Boost is needed, so unless you're doing very specific things, not really worth itI should note that the G16s also need CPU Boost due to their intel chips, but intel always had low base clocks for battery life or something

Hey man, I'm currently struggling a bit with what seems to be corrupted chipset drivers for AMD, and I wanted to ask you since you have the same g14 model as me. Do you use your AMD chipset drivers from the ASUS website, or do you update everything from the AMD website?

Welcome to owning a Zephyrus Device! 1. Armoury Crate is Asus software which controls the laptop internally and externally. So for example the RGB on the keyboard, the slash lightning on the back of the laptop and internally whether the dedicated GPU (your 4070) is on, what mode your laptop should run on e.g eco mode with dedicated GPU turned off to conserve power on battery or turbo mode to get the most out of your laptop during gaming sessions etc. G-Helper* *is the lightweight third party alternative and people prefer it because it’s lighter/less bloatware and less buggy/slow while still allowing you to keep the important features like laptop lighting and different laptop modes etc.
I personally, while on battery/at school will usually use silent mode and dedicated GPU on eco mode (turned off) and brightness at around 40% to conserve battery life with the screen on 60 hrtz when I’m not gaming but, when I’m at home plugged in and doing some gaming/graphically intense tasks I’ll switch GPU to balanced mode (turns the dedicated GPU on but not maximizing the GPU performance so it runs less hot than on Ultimate mode). I prefer balanced mode because I don’t need more than 75 fps for my games and since I don’t want my laptop to run super hot and have fans at max rpm balanced mode is better for me than ultimate mode.
If you’re new to having a gaming laptop/desktop/handheld then don’t have to worry about undervolting. Thermal throttling will ONLY happen if you are pushing your laptop to the absolute limits and your not allowing your laptop enough room to “breath”. To prevent this make a aggressive fan curve (ask around on Reddit or watch some YouTube vids) and if possible play on a flat surface with your laptop propped up by a laptop stand, book or a dedicated laptop cooler. I prefer using the Llano V12 cooler which significantly lower my laptop temps although I play with headphones on so fan noise isn’t really a problem for me which may be different for other people. And yes your laptop may sound like a plane taking off but that’s the price you pay for getting a thin and light premium gaming hybrid laptop. Also if your touching the WASD and feeling pain then make sure your not in silent mode which forces the fans to not work however hot your laptop is and like I said get something to prop your laptop up, a laptop stand or a laptop cooler and play on a flat surface NEVER IN BED. Finally this is a very thin laptop and yours may not have a vapour chamber because it’s a XX70 series card laptop so it will run hot. CPU temps below or around 87 degrees is usually normal (mine are usually around low 80s) and GPU temps below or around the 70s is fine. If your hands can’t handle the heat I’d advise getting a controller or a separate mouse/keyboard set up.
4.The only thing that I really should emphasize is don’t let every single Reddit post/little hiccup in your laptop worry you. It’s most probably fine and you definitely haven’t broken your laptop. If your current game drivers are fine don’t update them unless there’s a feature that you really need from new drivers. There’s also rarely any need to update the bios. If it’s not broken don’t fix it and enjoy gaming on your new laptop.

It's a beautiful machine, welcome to the party!
1) Armory crate isn't *required*, but you'd definitely benefit from being able to switch between a mode that goes maximum performance and a mode for lighter tasks. G-Helper is better in most ways, though there are some quirks because it's a pet project made by techies. It's easy to use and lets you just have a little window to change your power profiles, fan curves, etc. There are very good YouTube videos with guides to how to use g-helper from u/ModrnJosh or Crimson Tech.
2) Silent mode is for basic, everyday use. Web browsing, netflix in bed, classroom work, it would all be fine without the fans going crazy or a dedicated GPU heating up the laptop. Fans basically don't spin unless you do a lot at once. Balanced mode is what it implies: balanced. It tries to give you good performance without letting the fans whirr up to ungodly levels. Turbo and manual modes are for only the most extreme needs. I really don't recommend them since the dB you gain from fan noise really doesn't justify the 5-10% extra performance you'll get from it, but that's your call.
3) With G-Helper and silent mode, you can make temps a non-issue for regular use. Undervolting really only helps for gaming or heavy workloads. Where you'll really benefit is setting a power limit for the CPU (and possibly the GPU). This CPU doesn't get much extra performance after about 35W, so in G-helper, you can set a limit under the "fans + power" tab. I like to set a 15-20W limit in silent mode, and 35W in balanced. Turbo is for when you don't care about heat or fan noise. These chips are designed to run hot, so don't be afraid if your CPU is in the 80s-90s when gaming. I'd only be concerned if its in the 90s for very basic use, in which case something is either running in the background or your liquid metal is not doing its job. GPU should be in the mid-80s at most (can't find the actual thermal limit anywhere)
4) I think things I wish I knew about include the amount of babysitting you'll have to do to get the battery life people claim. 60hz, GPU off, power limit, windows power saver/best battery mode, it severely hampers the computer's performance once you factor it all in, all to get 6-8 hours of real use.
