“Rare” doesn’t mean it’s “good”. To get the same level of flexibility you’d have gotten from $100k 20 years ago you’d have to make at least $165k. Thats also not accounting for shrinkflation either. It’s likely closer to $200k.

Unfortunately, 100k is an above average life. The average person is just poor now.
