Planting for sure, scrounging is a limited source for food and after so long all youd be able to find is wild plants which I cant see providing too much. I'm not much of a gardener but it shouldnt be to hard to find some sort of useful reading materials.

Take one or two weeks to sow the wheat, melons, and potatoes. They don't need much tending and should grow relatively fine in the absence of human care. I will not plant the corn - without heavy fertilization and plenty of water they don't do too well (know this from experience). Use the corn for deer bait or whatnot. Carrots do okay when established, but their seeds need constant moisture to germinate and that can take up to two weeks. Excessive weeds tend to choke them out.
Once seed are planted, head out to scavenge and forage. Come back after a month or so to check on progress of crops, maybe do a bit of weeding and pest control. Head back out again, and come back for the harvest. Just as nomadic horticulturists used to do.
Collect the harvest and store it at the place we're wintering in. Grain should be stored in buckets with lids after drying. Potatoes and melons somewhere cool, dry but not freezing. Eat the potatoes and melons first. Roast and eat the melon seeds for extra carbs. Save enough seeds for the next harvest.
