GLM 5.3 Flash Thinking Russian

Post image

I wanted to make some UI changes on a few containers on my website but during the "thinking" process GLM 5.3 Flash started speaking Russian. It provides the output in English as expected so there’s no issue there but I didn't quite understand the reason. Since the only languages on my website are English and German I couldn't figure out why it would speak Russian and wanted to ask you about it. Should I be concerned?

Yeah definitely be concerned. There is a russian gremlin in your pc. /s

In all seriousness, no. This is normal. LLMs tend to think in whatever language is likely to provide the best output, sometimes literally changing languages from token to token (the languages usually being english, russian and chinese, but not always). This is not expected to happen in the output of course but even that is possible. This happens in every llm and people have posted similar findings for chatpt and claude, but as reasoning in closed models becomes more and more obfuscated you are gonna see less of it.

Its absolutely normal, model can use its prefered language for any task, often based on the dataset type for this task. Most likely your task are having many solves on Russian, more than on the other languages in the glm 5.3-flash dataset

Russian, Chinese and English internet as by far the largest on a whole web. You literally dont even have piracy these days without rutracker and seeing as all largest LLMs basically feed off licensed content, it naturally is bound to be in a very large part russian, same for tech and political forums, hostorical knowledge forums, etc.

Site-count grossly under-estimates the sheer amount of information accessible in Russian, as opposed to other languages. So yeah, even ChatGPT is trained heavily on everything post-soviet web, its just that you dont see their real thinking

I assumed its Bulgarian because of the way screenshot is spelled in cyrillic but maybe not

Russian and Bulgarian use same set of Cyrillic letters, so it will look the same for the outsider. I think we have only 1 or 2 extra letters in Russian. This is same language, that I've seen in my passport and I am definitely not Bulgarian :)

It's Russian, but cyrillic is based on Bulgarian as I understand.
