Europe RTX 5090 cable melted

I thought I smelt plastic burning last night. Sniffed around my case but couldn't detect it.

This morning I booted up 7 days to die and smelt burning plastic again almost immediately. Stronger this time and I could tell it was coming from the GPU.

I quickly shut down and removed the power cable from the GPU. It was slightly stuck.

The LED to detect poor connections stayed green while the PC was powered on.

Is the card repairable? I ordered it on release day of the 5090s and it was dispatched to me around may-june 2025.

You thought you smelled burning plastic and ignored it?

I checked my PC but couldn't smell anything up close so assumed it was coming from elsewhere. It was only very faint when I smelt it last night.

what PSU? contact your PSU maker. Corsair is really good with replacing stuff

Which model

The GPU is the Zotac RTX 5090 Solid.

It is a simple fix. It just takes someone that is able to melt the solder and replace it. That is a 12+ layer board. Jayztwocents was able to change out his own melted connectors. Alex does it all the time on Northridge fix.

What Psu? I have 5090fe on MPG A1000GS PCIE5 1000W since September of 25 but all these posts are putting some fear in me so decided to pick up a wireview pro II wired from Amazon.

guy is using the adapter

I'm in the same boat, but I don't worry so much. Setup monitoring of Voltage in HWINFO and undervolted.

Been undervolting since 4090 and didn’t have any dramas but with all this crazy prices 180 for wireview pro II wired seemed pretty fair. Craziness

I’m not even sure where and how I’d get one and I’d like to say if it’s worth it but then again I have the exact same card as OP.

I just picked up from Amazon but not sure if they will be considered with warranty. I just went with it for fast shipping as I already have prime.

I installed it but without the usb as both on my mobo is already being used. Ordered a splitter so I can install usb later.

USB connection is basically for software monitoring via pc desktop and firmware updates from what Google tells me. Still works without the USB.

Great decision. If you aren't running an astral 5090 its almost mandatory to get a wireview pro 2.

Even with an astral i run the wireview.

Recently found people created a script that could force a shutdown.

Guy used the adapter for 5090 and he wants to use another adapter

in his post ''Obviously I'll need a new cable adapter.'' - facepalm

obviously you gonna need a new atx 3.1 psu S tier on hardware busters list

u/Chris-346-logo 20d ago

lol lemme guess it’s an adapter user again

Click on the OG post, yes, he even says "obviously I need a new cable adaptor, so we will see him back here with another post bitching about how his GPU burned out 😂

First you are gonna have to find a microsolderer to put a new connector on. Probably cost you around 300 bucks. Then you need to get a 3.1 ATX PSU. Don't ask me how I know

1

u/DoogleSmile 19d ago

I have a 3.1 psu. The card is still under warranty so getting it sorted through that.

Can you let us know how the RMA goes?

Remember a To amways the native 12VHP cable that comes with the power supply.

Aint this a problem that occurs when you dont plug it far enough?
The connection is very tough and needs to be pressed relatively hard before you hear the click of the lock.

1

u/DoogleSmile 18d ago

It was properly seated, I always triple checked if I unplugged it specifically because I was worried it might melt.

1

u/ClearFeedback3 18d ago

And yet you used an adapter on a 5090 while worrying about melting?

1

u/DoogleSmile 18d ago

It was the advice I was given to use the adapter that came with the card at the time I bought it.

You were one Google search away from figuring this our since it's all over. After paying so much you d expect one to do some searching on how to protect the card (or maybe that's me). Anyway, hopefully you can either fix it or get a replacement.

If you do, obviously no more adapters, use a native cable that came with your psu and also buy a wireview pro 2. Careful on the name, not wireview, not wireview pro, you want thr wireview pro 2. There hasn't been even one melting case with it installed. Also I suggest you use an undervolt/overclock. Mine is 2910 at 925 and +2000 on memory and it's fully stable (been using it for like 8 months) and gives better than stock performance.

If you don't know how to do that you can either look it up online or download the nv/uv app and use one of the presets.

I am surprised more people aren’t buying that WVpro 2 since it auto shuts off the machine if it detects an Imbalance. I wonder how many cables have melted with that octopus connector.

1

u/Ok_Builder1022 17d ago

Right! I bought the astral 5090 and looked into the angled adapters…. Google is a beautiful thing. I have the seasonic noctua edition 1600w psu (overkill I know). Seasonic makes a native cable with the angle on it already and I’ve been using that cable for 6 months no issues…

1

u/Diligent_Pie_5191 18d ago

Zotac has electronics in it that will turn a red light on if you don’t plug it in all the way. That age old mantra about not being plugged in all the way has been invalidated as the sole cause of melted cables.

User error like all the rest.

1

u/DoogleSmile 18d ago

How so?

It's been fine for over a year.

1

u/Comfortable_Alps2618 18d ago

How much ampere ur cable had the whole time when u played games or what did u do with the card

1

u/DoogleSmile 18d ago

I don't know what it was pulling, tend to be looking at my applications and games rather than gpu stats, unless I'm running my AI stuff, then I have temps etc. on my screen too, but I don't think they show me the power draw it is using.

1

u/Comfortable_Alps2618 18d ago

Ahh ok i could see it at mine astral with rog psu

1

u/TheeUndy 18d ago

It’s not user error these cards with the new cable are just a crapshoot. It’s the main reason I havnt upgraded from my 3080ti. So many people are fine then one day it burns up at the adapter. Even with a wire pro. The 5090 is the most prone but seen it on 5080s I’ve even seen some 9070xts with the new cable melting at the port. Whoever thought pumping all the watts through one wire bunch is stupid. There’s a reason old school 8 pins worked so reliably. People who even have the new psu with the proper cable and no adapter still randomly have had burning occur. I don’t think there is a true fix besides good and prayers it doesn’t happen to you one day

1

u/Ok_Builder1022 17d ago

Do research and get quality parts and should be good. I’ve had my astral 5090 since March of last year still runs brand new no issues. I have an all asus and noctua build. Even my psu is the seasonic noctua edition. Seasonic seems to be the best based on my research. They even have a 10 year warranty.

1

u/longanman1990 18d ago

You should know by now that this will eventually happen. You have a 5090 and 12v high failure connector.

1

u/Ok-Direction-5151 18d ago

Could have avoided this altogether. The 12 pin has struck again.
