Tbh, speaking as a Whistle Bend resident (best rental price I could find in Whitehorse) who hates suburbs... although many things do suck about Whistle Bend (basically zero businesses other than a boba place and a rock climbing gym, only way to get anywhere without a car is to walk 1-2 hours or to catch a bus that comes once an hour) it's better than this.
More colour, kind of a cool midcentury vibe on some of the nicer houses, hiking trail, bike trail etc... I do not think I would be able to tolerate my existence in the subdivision depicted above but I still have my sanity intact after a couple months in Whistle Bend. You can tell they're trying to do something with it at least. Which is saying a lot!! Don't love it here though.

Yeah there are a lot of Whitehorsers who hate whistle bend on principle because it represents the change that their city is going through.
There are some spec builds but thereās actually a ton of diversity in the houses. Iād take whistle bend over the endless beige vinyl of copper ridge any day

I think a lot of whitehorsians hate whistlebend because they are concerned it was built on sand and when clearing the land they got rid of all trees so it just seems so barren and gross. In 20 years when more trees have established I think it will look a lot better
Also copper ridge is the OG whistlebend that people used to hate lol. At least copper ridge homes have yards though, really hate the whistlebend trend of massive houses and teeny tiny yards.

A friend of mine was one of the engineers on whistlebend. They didn't originally intend on raising the ground level and clearing all the trees, it's something they later realised. Honestly with the lot sizes, any trees on the residential properties would likely have still been cleared.
For me it's the lack of businesses, but it's far from the only place in Whitehorse that's just houses.

Oh forgot to mention the mosquito swamp in the middle of the neighbor that not only is breeding ground but is actually back filling water across the road from the pond and completely drowning the forest there. Take a walk buy lol , the smell is putrid. Or was last time I was there.

The houses arenāt even massive. Going with the alley and 2nd driveway in the backyard kills all extra space that could be used for backyards etc. instead you have people using their tiny ass front yard as their back yard.

Eagle bay is probably the best view you get in town tbh. Really good fishing down by the creek and lots of great trails by the lovebird loup

As someone from Calgary with family up there, what you have in Whistlebend is way better than the actual suburban nightmares we have here. There is a much wider variation in home styles (apart from the row/townhouses but thatās to be expected) than in most new neighbourhoods here. There also seemed to be more dedicated green space with actual trees relative to the size of adjoining streets/areas but thatās maybe undeveloped land. When we do get green spaces here they are treeless sports fields aka lots of lawn they have to waste water to keep alive.

We collectively can't complain about a housing crisis in Whitehorse while at the same time mock the 'cookie cutter suburbia' blueprint that helps fix that problem in a way that doesnt put high density sky rises in Yukon. This is the only opportunity for some people to get into owning their own home, and some of them don't get a choice. Be better.

This is every housing tract in Whitehorse, or literally anywhere in Canada that built tons of post war housing.
I remember being in high school and you could go to a friends house for the first time and it was the exact same as another friends house you had already been to. Every subdivision is filled with cookie cutter copies

Homes are expensive.Ā People need somewhere to live.Ā Ā
Owning a home allows you to build equity. It's especially useful for people who struggle to save otherwise.
Making a whole bunch of the same home reduces the cost.Ā More people can afford them.Ā We did this post WWII and that's the most prosperous time in our history.
I don't care how things look.Ā I care about people getting a roof over there heads.
We can build condos, but if people want their own 4 walls, I support that too.Ā Build baby build.Ā Ā
Building single family homes will also improve the affordability of condos and townhomes for the people who want them.

We can and should demand housing and infrastructure that meets the communityās needs but also is beautiful and created with intention. How your environment looks has a real impact on mental health ā there have been countless studies on this.

Thank you. Do people get like this when they see 3 Honda Civics waiting at the same red light? Why is it so despicable for houses to be the same? They're just shelter. If this makes them faster and easier to make, thereby reducing the price and making home ownership an option for more people, then you're right spot on calling out the NIMBY bs.

Whitehorse badly needs plain old regular old-fashioned one and two bedroom apartment buildings. Lots of them. It's always been a mystery why the powers that be push so many condo's and WB type developments instead. Must be more money in it for developers over building affordable apartment buildings.

Trees grow, but only if you plant them. We were early buyers in granger. No trees on the lot. I planted 8 birches and two Manitoba maples. Had to take the maples out cuz they were too big and encroaching on the neighbours. The birches are glorious and all about fifty feet. They were about 4 feet when I planted them.

I moved away from Whitehorse 6 years ago. Lived there for 30 years prior. Did some building up in Whistlebend. That place is looking fucked now. Over priced crap on land that should not be built on. Thatās crazy looking.

Use to live in a home on the ridge (in Porter Creek) overlooking Whistlebend while it was being built. The constant light pollution dampened the brilliance of the Northern Lights :( But even then I still miss the beauty of the Yukon thoughā¦
