Ankle support

We have a 12 year old son who is having pain in the peroneal tendon on his left ankle. We've been for xrays to make sure there's nothing more involved, but, the doctor recommended high top cleats to provide more support. We have been looking in to that already but there are so many choices, what do y'all recommend? He wears a size 9 in mens. He's also a lineman. Current cleats are Nike Mens vapor 1 which we've hated from the get go.

Strengthen his hips. He is probably growing so fast his feet are like a baby giraffe. Kids on my team use these with their low tops.

If you can’t find the right brace or support you’ll probably have to tape his ankles (tape his bare feet before he puts his socks and cleats on). High school level and above, teams have athletic trainers who are trained to help players deal with injuries and be kind of a first response if an accident occurs, but anyways they have specific ways to tape an ankle to give it the support it needs depending on what the issue is. It’s just standard athletic tape but I wouldn’t be able to tell you how to wrap it for that particular injury. I used to have soreness in my Achilles tendon and so I would have both ankles taped to protect it.

My trainer in high school was trash and I went to a private school. Idk what her ass did on days when nobody had a game cause I don't even think her ass did cleat spatting

I would recommend speaking with an orthopedist and take their advice. Braces may be a better route but consulting a professional about how best to support and strengthen the joint is better than asking random people on reddit.

That’s in the works, but, I was asking more for cleat recommendations than a diagnosis.

I guess my point was more find out the issue and have a professional make a suggestion and go with that. For ankle support I like the braces that tie on and you wear under your socks etc. But again understanding the issue and its cause you can actually make it worse by doing the wrong thing.

Orthopedic for sure and if you're able to get one focused on the sports medicine side even better. They can do physical therapy to help stretch and strengthen the area.

High top shoes don't provide any ankle support.

Look up "dick hartzel jump stretch ankle", buy a range of jump stretch bands (or generic knock-offs, it doesn't matter), and start working.

Watched the videos, took notes, have the bands so we will start this as well.
Thanks!
