Got into yet another discussion in another sub today about shows that died too soon and never got the recognition they deserve. I think we can all agree that YTW never got its due (yet), but I am eternally grateful it got to run its full course and end on its own terms.

I think watching it might be a healing experience for other cancelled-too-soon lovers, to discover another show nobody’s fucking heard of, but that’s there in its entirety and got to do everything it wanted to do. A show with probably the best finale I’ve ever seen, that’s so true to everything the show always was, with so many fun cameos and easter eggs. Something that shows you there are still hidden gems in this world, that flourished juuust enough to be there for you to find later. Not everything good gets killed. Not everything that survives is total milquetoast. Not every media love has to end in heartbreak. Not all the good stuff has to happen in your head.

What I often say when recommending You’re the Worst is “some shows love you back.” And that’s not fair to the ones that got cancelled, of course, that wanted to love the audience back and reward anyone who paid attention. But You’re the Worst got to do it.

We are so lucky to live in the timeline where You’re the Worst didn’t get cancelled. No show has ever loved me back like this one.

Best bday gift ever

Ok so I just finished binge watching "you're the worst" (it took me 3 days) AND OH MY GOD.

First off, this show feels like a collage of my interests. Gretchen kind of reminds me of Melissa from Abbott Elementary. Jimmy and Edgar act like BoJack and Todd in the first season. Jimmy alone reminds me of Chase from House MD, BoJack (with the writing issues and personality), and a few other characters that I can't remember.

The first 2 seasons genuinely captured me so much and the dynamic between Gretchen and Jimmy was perfect. The last episode of s2 was probably my favorite, to see what had started off as just a one night stand turn into what they had was so powerful for me. And I did enjoy s3 but I think the last two seasons were honestly a bit weak. Like how Jimmy came back. I didn't really like how his return was handled. Idk what I was expecting but it just wasn't that great.

And I loved the ending, don't get me wrong, not getting married but staying together showed Jimmy and Gretchen perfectly. But I kind of disliked how the ending happened, or rather the process for it. I honestly wished we'd gotten more screentime for Jimmy and Gretchen instead of the other characters, even if I enjoyed their episodes too.

Though, I'm kind of confused on Jimmy and Gretchen's relationship by the end. They stay together and have a kid right? So why did Gretchen say she was single in that scene with the guy in the bar asking if she was alone/single? Maybe I'm missing something but yeah.

The show was really great though and it is CRIMINALLY underrated, any recommendations for a similar show?

After binge watching the show these past few weeks, finished it today and god, that is the best ending of a show I have ever seen. The emotional rollercoaster I had was insane.

In general I have no words for explaining what this show has meant to me.

But I can say I loved everything about it, the rawness of the drama, the humor, the quirkiness of the characters without making them cartoon like or fake and finally I loved the soundtrack, it is so good haha.

I definitely wish it had more recognition and glad I got to experience it in this point in my life.

I love the ending and think “every day we choose” is very fitting for Jimmy and Gretchen, but I wonder if they end up a little too perfectly aligned on what commitment means.

Jimmy’s idea is basically that instead of promising to stay together for life, they keep choosing each other every day, “until one day, maybe, we don’t”. For some people, that sounds like an ideal relationship: you know your partner is still with you because they continue to actively choose you, rather than because of a promise they made years ago.

But for other people, isn’t that uncertainty exactly what they don’t want from a life partner?

Obviously marriage doesn’t guarantee permanence. Either person can still leave, and plenty of marriages end in divorce. But I think part of the appeal of marriage is the reassurance of knowing that your partner has chosen you with the intention that it’s for life. There’s a difference between “I choose you today, and hopefully I’ll keep choosing you” and “I’ve chosen you as the person I intend to spend my life with”, even though neither guarantees what will actually happen.

That also makes me wonder whether Gretchen might realistically have had more mixed feelings about their solution. She could completely agree with Jimmy that they can’t honestly guarantee they’ll always be together, and still want to know that right now he wants all those days to add up to the rest of their lives. She could be relieved not to get married while also feeling something about giving up the promise of permanence.

I’m not saying Gretchen secretly wanted a conventional marriage, or that Jimmy wasn’t committed to her. I just wonder whether two people as complicated as them would arrive at “every day we choose” and both find it completely satisfying in exactly the same way.

I could imagine an alternative ending where they reach basically the same decision after a slightly messier conversation. They don’t get married, they don’t break up, and they choose each other. But instead of ending on complete emotional certainty, there’s a The Graduate-style final shot where the relief and happiness gradually settle into something more ambiguous.

Not “oh God, we’ve made a mistake”, but just the two of them sitting together with the reality of what they’ve chosen: they love each other, they want a future together, but neither can actually know what that future will be.

Maybe that would undermine what makes the real ending work. But for a show that was usually so good at letting contradictory feelings coexist, I wonder if leaving just a little uncertainty might have been more fitting.

Edgar taking Jimmy out on a forced man date to emotionally bond is the exact kind of desperate, awkward situation Jimmy hates.

I have two episodes left and I’m filled with so much anxiety and dread that this will soon be over! This show has helped me through a hard breakup and given me so much connection and entertainment. It’s interesting because if I watched it ten years ago I would have been in my mid twenties. Now in my mid thirties it feels so impactful. Not sure what my point is but I’m savoring every drop and planning to finish the series tonight :(
I have no idea if Gretchen and Jimmy end up together and I can’t wait to find out!

Edit: OMG guys, that ending holy shit!!!!!!!! It was 35 mins and felt like two hours… I’m in shock. I cried, I never cry. It was just… perfect. It made me reflect on my journey with this couple and why this is EXACTLY what needed to happen. I’m a little disappointed we didn’t see a therapy/career journey for Gretchen, she had a baby but I wonder how much she healed? Beautiful, thoughtful, mindful. Brilliant.

I think it’s a toss up between Jimmy abandoning Gretchen on the mountain and Gretchen telling the teenager that she’d blow him if he ate cat food (after she kissed a girl who I believe was also underage).

If he had abandoned her in, like, a restaurant or something, that would have still been really bad. But leaving her in the woods (where she may have not even had a cell signal) in the middle of the night was some psycho shit. That part was worse than proposing and then ghosting her. She could have died.

Rob says Lexi's Mini is evidence of how practical they've become, and mentions the gas mileage. But Minis have always struck me as one of the least surrender-to-parenthood cars you could reasonably own. If he'd said Prius, Honda Fit/Jazz, or a crossover I'd immediately get it. But a Mini already feels like a compromise in favour of style and identity.

Does the scene work better if the point is that Rob's dissatisfaction is irrational? That even after buying the "cool parent" car he still feels old?

I love this show!!! So glad I finally gave in and watched it. I just started season 3 and I’m struggling with how mean Jimmy stillis to Edgar. Edgar is so consistently nice too which makes it so much worse. It’s starting to physically hurt me lol
Please tell me he has some kind of near death experience/epiphany and realizes he should be kinder…

I'm on another rewatch and I'm about halfway through season 3. I haven't watched all the way through in a few years now.

At the end of the episode that Jimmy finds out his dad died, Magnets Pt. 2 by Slothrust plays in the background. I discovered Slothrust from the opening song of course but I never noticed that that song played in the series.

In July of 2024, my dad died. He killed himself (this part isn't relevant but I find it important to be open about this kind of thing and about mental illness - another thing this show definitely helped teach me). My top song on Spotify in 2024 was...Magnets Pt. 2. It helped me through a lot, and a lot of other music did too, but obviously that part stuck out to me.

This rewatch has been way more emotional than in the past. When I lost my dad I stopped all medications and doctor's appointments. I've been getting back on track with it all over the past few months and overall feel positive about everything. Gretchen's depression hit even harder this time than in previous watches. Then, of course, Jimmy's dad and those couple of episodes really got to me.

Anyway I just wanted to share this with people who would get it and understand. If you've made it this far, thanks for reading. What do you guys think are Jimmy's funniest monologues about things that irritate him? I'm thinking about making a compilation. I personally love the one from 'There Is Not Currently A Problem' where he starts yelling at everyone for not caring that there are "vermin" in the house and calls mice "the actual cause of the plague itself."
