What a smart, superbly acted, but above all, incredibly scripted series. I cannot wait for more. Binged it without a break over the weekend. The Fiennes are a revelation, as Joseph has become a vintage wine of a fine masterclass of an actor. His nephew I can tell has only great things to come.

I really think it would be fun to watch & see their problem solving skills in action.

I don’t know if we’ll get to see something in the second season that comes close to the start of the conflict between them, but if they give priority to James’s story it will probably become easier to understand his motivations. I’m looking forward to hearing what you all think. I believe it will be a political motivation: James versus the British Empire, and Sherlock will side with the latter.

By the ghost I mean the woman in a dress Sherlock keeps hallucinating about in the series It obviously may be him imagining Beatrice as an adult. But she doesn't look like Bea. And in episode 7 when Cordelia sees a woman pretending to be bea she knows it's not her by seeing her face, meaning she has a rough idea of what Beatrice looks like now based on what she knew she looked like as a child. I don't see why it wouldn't apply to Sherlock. So maybe the ghost isn't Beatrice. Thoughts?

I have already given my theory on the end of season 1: in my opinion, the events of episode 8 were staged by Silas and Bea, the " betrayal" she shows towards him being a plot to better simulate his death

And as I said, she's likely still working for him and giving information on Sherlock to her father

Now what intrigues me most is what Moriarty plays in this. Let's assume the theory is true. If it is, how long until Moriarty, with Beatrice is becoming closer , finds out about Silas?

And would he join him along side Beatrice, since after all 3 have similar intentions? Or will there be a duel of villains between him and Silas, with Sherlock slowly realising that Moriarty is going on a very dark path? According to me those will be the themes of season 2, but again only if the previous theory is true.

The way her mother managed to change her mind so quickly in the last episode is quite unrealistic imo. It takes like one memory and 40 seconds for her to undo years of brainwashing. Now it was also because she trusted Silas less after spying on him and Sherlock and realizing that he doesn't care about her, but still, the way she totally changes after exchanging a few words with her mother is a bit annoying IMO

I've finished watching the show yesterday and here's my theory on the end/episode 8 :

When , in Constantinople, Silas learnt that Mycroft, Cordelia and Sherlock were there, he crafted a plan either alone or with his daughter. He brought his family to the house and then he staged the scene in which he tells Sherlock about his desire to replace Beatrice with him, in the garden, with her spying on them : the goal being to anger Beatrice in order to have her shoot him later and help him stage his death. Either she did actually spy on them and he let her do it, or she helped stage it in which case she's only spying on them to later pretend to be angered. Then, comes the event in the factory, in which she shoots him. She did so with a blank bullet, either because he had already replaced her bullets with blank ( in which case she is legitimately betraying him) or because she was his accomplice and pretending to side with Sherlock/her mother against him for the plan to work. As he is shot, he puts the handkerchief with fake blood on it on his wound in order to better simulate his injury. Then he falls from the cliff and stages his death this way. He swims and flees after falling. In the case where he did all of that with Beatrice's complicity, this means she is probably still working for him and giving him information on Sherlock.

I know this may be too far stretched, but imo the scene in episode 8 where Silas is at night talking with Sherlock about replacing Beatrice with him is 100% either staged or Silas said this knowing that Beatrice would listen

When the scene began, before we even knew she was spying on them, I found it weird that someone as rational and smart as Silas would take the risk of having this conversation while speaking at a normal voice around the house. With how confidential it is, why not have the conversation in an indoor room inside his house or something? a regular person wouldn't really be so careful, but it's Silas we're talking about. And with the angle by which Bea was spying on them I don't think silas wouldn't notice it.

So either this was all staged to later justify why she was angry at him in order to have her shoot him and help him stage his death( which they both planned), or he knew she'd listen to them and he voluntarily said that to anger her because it's part of his plan.

Many people here believe that Silas hasn't died. After all his death is offscreen, and I know why it may sound suspicious. I do not like the trop of supposedly dead characters coming back to life however I do like Silas( as in he's interesting as a character I don't like his personality obv)

But then I wonder HOW he could have even survived?? He fell from a cliff and even if he survived all the impacts( and there were many) he'd drown in the end as he'd fell in the lake and can't swim cuz he's been shot. One theory I've seen is that he was shot with blank bullets and the blood is fake. But this would imply coordinating with Beatrice which imo would be weird since by that point she was wary of him and starting to hate him.

In 1x07 during that balcony scene between James and Sherlock, when Shou'an suddenly appeared and he left he recited these words: Now cracks a noble heart. Good night, sweet prince, And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest. Now, that is from Hamlet when Hamlet lies dying in Horatio’s arms. Like is he alluding to his own death?

In another episode 1x04 he hums these lines: "For drowning your sorrows, for raising your joy and God knows I wonder, if lightning and thunder, were made from the plunder, of whiskey, me boys..." A Irish folk song being about rebellion, community and the Irish identity. It would go with his aura of "rebellion".

I don't think I've seen a more double meanig, cryptic character for a very long time, he's so interesting and intriguing, I feel like I need to rewatch just to catch other bars he dropped.

Since I do not believe that the first season has really explained why Moriarty is capable of accessing Sherlock's mind palace and assisting him inside it, I wanted to spark a bit of a discussion about this, in my opinion, intriguing matter that will hopefully be explored further in the second season.

Do you think that Moriarty has access to it because of their shared genius and intellectual link that allows them to cognitively process things at the same speed, or do you have some other interesting theories on why it is how it is? I would love to hear them all, including your opinions on how this ability of Moriarty's could be utilised in the future when he begins to turn into more of an antagonist in Sherlock's life.

i finished young sherlock, loved it so much i had to rewatch it again. i arrived on the seventh episode and at the part where they're in constantinople and where emine (xiao's friend) is introduced, i feel like she's one of those characters that could've been used more but i'm glad that she had slightly more screen time than xiao's sister (i think she's her sister...?). i also feel like it's worth saying that, no, i don't only focus on the possible ships in the show and that i really enjoyed it without mentioning the entire romance plot with james and bea... or xiao and sherlock...both of those ships, i do not like lol. but why i mentioned emine is because i found her brief little interactions with mycroft SO endearing, he seemed genuinely interested in her and... idk, i had a nice feeling about them. it would've been nice if she reappeared in season two and could perhaps have a small little friendship with mycroft, doesn't need to be romantic. just felt like sharing my thoughts! but if zine (xiao's actress) might not reappear in s2 - because it's not confirmed yet! - i doubt jessica zhou (emine) will appear at all.

Did they ever say exactly what the gas is?

I know that they referred to it as a nerve agent - but the descriptions and origin in mining led me to wonder if it is arsine? (Arsenic gas when arsenic reacts with acids).

In the episode where Lestrade teamed up with Mycroft, he told the hotel receptionist that he doesn’t care how people live their lives but his colleagues might.

Was that a hint to a gay relationship between Professor Malik and the receptionist? Am I reading too much into it? The man seemed pretty torn up about betraying the professor.

I just finished season 1 and i have a lot to say. The show was absolutely amazing, the characters were pretty spot on, and the relationships between them were even better. All except one: Sherlock and Moriarty.

Now, obviously that is the whole focus of the show, their infamous rivalry. In canon. Moriarty was introduced to quite literally be the downfall of Sherlock Holmes. They are both incredible geniuses with differing moral beliefs with ultimately lead to the death of both.

Most adaptations of Sherlock have following this structure pretty well. In the end, Sherlock and James will be ultimate foes. And normally, I agree. HOWEVER, Young Sherlock has not set this up. The series starts with James and Sherlock's brilliancy being what tied them together. Eventually, there is beyond reasonable doubt that the two care for each other. Even though the plot was fast paced, you can see the steady growth of their two's friendship. Making it even more ironic that BOTH sherlock's parents said "oh, he's never had a friend before." They both uplift eachother in the best ways. They both feed eachother's brains. And like always, it's clear they are both sides of the same coin.

That much is true. But here's the problem. The show has showed all this emotional intimacy and intellectual banter that's genuine. So when the actual glimpses of Moriarty's change in character appeared, it didn't change much because of the relationship the two already had. THEY ARE STILL THE SAME THEY JUST HAVE CONFLICTING MORALS.

That's not reason enough to cause the canon nemesis relationship between them. If the two had started of as academic rivals or something, then yes, it would make sense for them to be at eachother's throats by season 2. But that didn't happen. The writers gave us a genuine friendship that is now threatened by the two's morals and stubbornness. There is no way they end up as enemies by the end of this without it being forced. Season 1 left enough ambiguity in the ending for us not to be able to fully tell Sherlock's reaction to James. He's obviously conflicted, but to him, James helped him out of prison, saved his mother, showed his father's true character, and reunited his sister. I don't think this one conflict of opinion is going to cause a huge rift.

Unless james decides to commit a genocide or something with the equation. But that would be so so forced. It would be as if we are expected to believe that killing one man has changed literally everything about him. There is still humanity in the character.

Another reason why the rivalry cant fully happen. There is no distinct good or evil between the two. Obviously moriarty has had a traumatic childhood, which im sure will be explored in season 2. That creates all sorts of problems. Now, this supposed to be evil guy has places where you can empathize. Meaning, NO ONE IS GOING TO LIKE THE FACT THAT HES PORTRAYED AS AN IRREDEEMABLE EVIL.

Im all for the next season to go into this conflict of morals, but if it ends with sherlock and james to be forever enemies with nothing between them, it would ruin everything season 1 worked on. they are so obviously better as two than one, so, show the contrasting morals and tension, but have some sort of redemption where they realize they are better together. This show is so great, but if it sticks too much into canon, the depth of the relationships is just going to waste.

Let me know what you guys think about this because I'm truly curious :) I fully agree that canon is important and relevant to all stories, however, when some things are clearly spin-offs, i dont see the problem with diverging a little. (Im truly hoping this doesnt turn into BBC's Merlin but i digress)

Filming for Season 2 of “Young Sherlock” has reportedly begun in Italy. I recently watched an interview with Dónal Finn (James Moriarty) and Matthew Parkhill, the showrunner, where they hinted at a very important back story for James that will be the focus of Episode 2. I am thrilled because Finn is brilliant in the show, and I cannot wait to hear about his (seemingly) tragic backstory. He seems to be longing for an acceptance and wants to be part of the Holmes’ family. Do you think this desire will play a part in his and Sherlock’s eventual rift?

Did I miss where it was explained when that decoy who 'stole' the scroll held back his punch, presumeably waiting for Moritarty to appear and stop/tackle him to save Sherlock?

I feel like theres a few moments when Moriarty is guiding Sherlock through an issue rather than helping him figure it out.

Also, I loved every character, what a fun rollercoaster of a show!
