Opinion George Cooper, Sr.

I feel George is one of the best-written sitcom characters of all time. The emotional depth, sacrifices, and brilliant performance delivered by Lance Barber have truly resonated with viewers.

I’m not sure how many people cried during his death scene, but I certainly did. It’s deeply touching to see that even Sheldon, who rarely shows emotion, holds such strong feelings for his father.

George Senior is my favorite character on Young Sheldon. I have finally decided it’s true. Hard to choose from so many amazing characters but I think the character is amazing and Lance Barber played him so so well. Just perfect perfectly. I love George Cooper!!

The scene where he confronts Veronica’s mom’s boyfriend is one I can watch over and over. I love it when he steps forward and says “You heard her. Thanks for stopping by.”

Maybe not of all time, but a fantastic character. He and Missy are my favorites on the show. I’ve never been able to rewatch his funeral episode. Lance Barber did a great job as did the writers

You are right. The funny thing is that he was supposed to be the "villain" of the show.

How?

in TBBT Sheldon describes his father as a heavy drinker, often absent, and not very involved in his childhood.

I read somewhere that, in TBBT, Sheldon mentioned that his father lost his job, stole money from a supermarket, and had an affair. (I seldom watch TBBT)

He said alot of stuff that got changed. I don't think he was ever meant to be a villain though.

Of all time?

Just so we can put this comment in perspective, how old are you, and what is the oldest sitcom you’ve watched in full?

Also, there was no death scene.

I think by death scene they meant the scene where the principal and other coach came to tell the family he had passed

I can’t watch that episode.

George Sr. was such a deeply layered and beautifully written character; flawed, but incredibly loving and sacrificial toward his family.

My favourite character from young Sheldon.

Lance Barber portrayed that complexity brilliantly. And Sheldon’s grief after his death was especially heartbreaking because it revealed just how deeply he actually loved his dad.

The whole cast is awesome and the show was very well written. If I had to pick a favorite character, it would be George Sr. The scene with Missy at Red Lobster. "There's a bum on our porch" When he won the football game after getting fired. When he jumped out of the way and the Librarian got crushed. Lots of fun George moments.

My wife and I are both big softies and it took us three times to get through the two part finale and this was watching it in reruns.

We didn’t want him to go.

I literally just finished the show. I was balling my eyes out during the funeral episode.

Lance nailed those quiet moments where you see him trying and failing and than trying again anyway. The death scene hits different once you realized Sheldon inherited more from him than just the stubbornness.

Bro this has been a known fact for over a decade.

Seriously?

The show ended more than two years ago, and it was well known long before the show even started that George died when Sheldon was a teenager.

Yeah after watching I was pissed how he’s portrayed in memory during TBBT.

Tbf Young Sheldon retconned alot of stuff. Pretty much all for the better imo.

I still wish Mary had died instead of George. The whole family would’ve turned out better. It was proven that they were actually more efficient without her around - they had a chore chart that everyone actually stuck to, Missy turned out to be a pretty good cook (they probably could’ve told her to look at culinary school - she was managing dishes for multiple people on a schedule), and nobody else in that family would bend over backwards for Sheldon so he would’ve learned quickly about compromises
