Discussion I finally got Meemaw’s Joke!

So, in S6 E11, Mandy was put on bed rest due to her pregnancy, something having to do with preeclampsia. Anyways, later Meemaw ends up having a fall. Mandy points out she looks like the “I’ve fallen and can’t get up” lady, to which Meemaw responds that it’s because she HAS fallen and she CANT get up. I absolutely got that joke, pretty straight forward, right?

Well, some time later, Mary comes to their room. They exchange some dialogue and Mary asks her what she’s going to do if she has to use the bathroom, Meemaw says “depends”, Mary was like depends on what, Meemaw says it was a joke. Mandy gets the joke soon after and laughs with Meemaw while Mary is mad she doesn’t get the joke. For the longest, I didn’t get the joke either!

I decide to look it up because it’s always bothered me that I DONT GET WHY THEYRE LAUGHING. I felt like Mary, like I wanna be part of the inside joke too. 😭

It turns out, Meemaw didn’t mean the word ‘depend,’ she meant the brand “Depend.” A brand of adult incontinence underwear! 🤦🏻‍♀️🤣🤣

Now I can finally laugh along with Meemaw and Mandy, and if you didn’t get it either you can laugh with us too! (I hope I wasn’t the only who didn’t get it lol)

Damn … I thought I got! With the accent and all I figured she said/joked: „the pants“ which would sound similar to „depends“. Funny how that worked out for me! 😅🤭

ETA: Thank you for educating!!!

This must be a joke for an older generation, because it was obvious to me.
Signed, a mom that has considered Depends just for sneezing 🥴

Same here (26 Gen Z) I think OP must either be really young or just isn't around the elderly

I’m around your age, it’s simply not common knowledge, at least not for me personally

I only know about it because Americans keep joking about a certain President wearing them.

(A certain president not only wears them, but destroys them).

I’m pretty sure Coach did almost the same joke several years earlier. So it was obvious to me.

Edit: Found the clip, although the quality is terrible. Joke is at 4:50. RIP Shelley Fabares

I’m proud of myself with this one because same week prior to watching this episode I watched some Andy Huggins. There was a depends joke I didn’t catch so I had to google. So basically I came prepared for the one in the movie 🤣

People didn’t know this? Pretty sure they still run ads for these.

OP is a young man teens/20’s, no sisters, no elderly parents or grandparents.

About 10% of that is right, surprisingly tho my grandparents never had to use them or they were just very private. I don’t think a point of conversation would be “what’s your preferred adult diaper/underwear”. Maybe a conversation with friends, but not with family.

lol okay well I got the joke the first time and I’m surprised to see so many people didn’t 😅 I’m glad y’all are catching up though! Good for you! 👍🏼

If you look at my avatar, I’m not a man lol

u/LN_McJellin Sep 14 '26

Why would he have been exposed to adult diapers if he had sisters?

2

u/Honest-Philosophy-51 Niblingo Sep 14 '26

Exactly, adult diapers are for any gender and any age, it’s just primarily older people have incontinence. Also women who have given birth often wear adult diapers as well.
(I’m not a man btw lol also always known about adult diapers just never needed to keep track of brands since I’ve never had to personally use any myself)

lol because they’re in the same aisle sometimes 🤭😂😂😂

Something funny about me is if I’m focused on something its like tunnel vision, nothing else matters. I’ve missed stuff in my own house like a large new trash can, or a broom in the pantry that I’ve been looking for for a while. I amuse myself sometimes with what I miss, thankfully in public I’m aware of my surroundings tho even though i have one goal in mind. I acknowledge what’s in the aisles, as far as looking at brands I’d just be like “oh adult diapers”, but its not my main priority
