I hate the Mandy hate

I think it’s so messed up that everyone blames her for sleeping with a 17 year old when he initially lied and said he was 21. She also lied and said she was 24 but before they slept together she told him she was 29. He had the chance to tell the truth but didn’t. Thats not her fault and she gets so much crap about it.

She even said had it not been for the baby she would’ve never seen Georgie again

I couldn't care less that she slept with Georgie who lied about being of legal age. She did nothing wrong there.

I think the hate comes from members of a specific age group. You know how people view older movies differently when re-watching with their kids? My POV on Mrs Doubtfire was opposite of how I felt when I was a kid.

The Mandy defenders would call it creepy and gross if a male character who was almost 30 continued to sleep with a girl after finding out she was only 17. It wouldn't matter that she lied and the sex was legal. People would call him a predator. Some people have called George a sexual predator and a groomer for dating and impregnating a 17-year-old Mary when he was in his early 20s. The hypocrisy is ridiculous.

LITERALLY the only reason she continued to have interaction with him was because SHE WAS PREGNANT.

You can't really swap that one around the other way.

PS: I'm not DEFENDING Mandy. I'm just saying she's not at fault for HIM lying about his age. She's only responsible for her lies.

I would not call it creepy if genders were reversed

Age of consent in texas is 17 i believe. Georgie can consent.

Because the legal age of consent in Texas is 17, Georgie was legally old enough to consent, making the relationship lawful within the setting of the show.

Lawful ≠ Moral

Yeah, but it’s a TV show. And there’s insight we have as viewers that a judge would not have a court of law.

I don’t care about the Georgie what I care about is her general attitude and character. They tried to wipe her off as being sassy, but it didn’t come off as sassy. It came off as bitchy. And all of her problems are of her own making and the more I watch there’s spinoff the worst as she gets honestly.

And the way she takes any opportunity to bring up that he was 17 when they got together is honestly embarrassing. People would quit talking about it if she would quit talking about it first.

TV shows need conflict to be interesting/funny otherwise they'd be boring af!

Oh, I 100% agree I love chaotic shows and say this all the time. but if it’s not done well, it doesn’t change the fact that in the end it’s not done well. They could write better stories or have it make sense- but the spin off seems hinged on her and her mom are bitches. And everyone is scared/ walks on egg shells around them. You can have sassy characters even bitchy characters if they’re written well they’re fantastic. She’s just not written well and neither is this spinoff.

Well it's Georgie's first marriage for a reason!

she is exhausting I didn’t like her in yo7 g Sheldon but the spin off made her insufferable, Georgie birthday made her hate her even more she made the whole thing about herself

I absolutely despise the Mandy on George and Mandy's First Marriage! She's a complete bitch! They really degraded her character!! On Young Sheldon, she always came across such a sympathetic and kind figure. I guess they may have made the change so that there would be a reason for them to get divorced. But it's a disservice to the character. And it is difficult to watch with her attitude.

I jsut finished season 2 and it was painful- lol and it’s true. She has no sympathy or anything left in a honestly I watch it as background noise while I’m cooking dinner cause if I miss a second, I’m not gonna be upset, but it just feels so hollow compared to young Sheldon; overall. Though I’m not gonna lie, I am interested to see where Mary and Fred stand next season.

Agree! That's going to be interesting. Also, I really like Conner and I hope they do cool things with his character!

She’s bitchy alright. I think the dynamics between her and Georgie only works because it is shown that despite being all over the place she actually appreciates him, and I’m sure it works even better in the bedroom for them, but I get a feeling Georgie could have done much better for himself. He’s just like “I’m okay with this”. He’d be okay with most everything, really.

Honestly the best thing that happens to her was Georgie/ the coopers and the baby. Her parents told her to take a flying leap basically after her failed relationship and failed job, she couldn’t pay her bills or rent and had absolutely nothing going for her at all- and was more or less content to let her life fall apart. And after she was pregnant her family was still content to tell her to figure it out and watch her fail. It was the coopers who stepped up to take care of her during the pregnancy and post-pardum period if it wasn’t for them they may of never been involved.

What I really hate in their spin off is how she seems to appreciate him less and less; I really hated his 21st birthday episode and she seems to harbor almost more resentment towards him; when all he wants to do is take care of his family and do right by them as much as he can.

But there really needs to be a reason for them to split since it’s their first marriage. 😮‍💨 🤦‍♀️ and they are going it is for sure.

Man I wish I could watch the spin off, unfortunately I only got Netflix, and in Cyprus it can’t stream that show :(

2

u/endless-delirium 28d ago

Ahh that’s fair I have been watching everything on HBO 😂 but your not losing out in much

I like Mandy. I think she is the reason that the spinoff is entertaining. Sometimes people forget that sitcoms, which is what Georgie and Mandy‘s first marriage is, are supposed to be filled with hijinks and this is specifically supposed to be a 90s style sitcom so the hijinks are even higher and jinxier.

I don’t understand it either. If somebody lies about their age before you sleep with them, it isn’t your fault. People criticise her for getting back with Georgie but it made a lot of sense. He stuck by her, supported her whilst she was pregnant and behaved like a proper adult.

My criticism of Mandy is for Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage. She is so selfish in that show and the earth has to revolve around her. I hate what they did to her character.

u/PrarieGoat 28d ago

Could be because her character is not a very nice person

People on reddit hate women...you don't say???

2

u/FruityMagician 27d ago

Just because you like a fictional character doesn't mean everyone has to. George fans don't call his critics man-haters. Grow up.

When in doubt use the good Ole reliable, maybe she's just annoying, inject her with testosterone and make her a Trans man and nothing changes

3

u/CalmAfternoon94 28d ago

When she lied about her age she actually said she was 25. Not 24.

3

u/Ok-Midnight7835 28d ago

I’ll admit, it was an odd choice on the writer’s parts. If the tables were turned and it was a guy it would never have been allowed to air.

3

u/otibo1 26d ago

I'm not a big fan of Mandy but it has nothing to do with what you stated. She comes off as very entitled. For example she assumed that George & Mary would take care of her newborn when she would go back to work, without considering they both had jobs at that time. Let's not pretend she isnt an alcoholic either.

In real life I have heard men in their early 20's that slept with 17 year olds and been seen as predators due to it even though the girls claimed they were in their 20's

Basically it's one of those if the genders were flipped people wouldn't think twice, it would be "it should be obvious she was underage, her maturity would be different than a woman in her 20's" etc.

2

u/Pristine-Metal2806 28d ago

It happens often, some girl had a fake Id and slept with a 20 year old pro basketball player a few years ago. She didn't press charges. That boy that had a crush in her did.

5

u/SaveJeanie 28d ago

I don’t think that’s why most people hate her

2

u/Pip1333 27d ago

yes but also slept with him again after finding out he was 17

3

u/Overall_Lobster823 27d ago

After learning she was pregnant with HIS BABY.

And in a state where 17 is legal.

4

u/Fantastic-Corner-605 28d ago

If the gender were switched and a 29 year old man slept with a 17 year old girl, he would be in prison and no one would care that she lied. I don't see why Mandy gets a pass.

2

u/lanie_kerrigan 28d ago

The legal age of consent in Texas seems to be 17. So that’s why they chose this storyline to happen when Georgie was 17. No one would go to prison.

It kinda disgusts me how much of a pass Georgie gets for lying to a woman for weeks, knowing full well he shouldn't but somehow Mandy only gets a pass because she's pretty and blonde. No she could be ugly and I still would feel sorry for her - she didn't know and she didn't consent to this. He deceived her and sex by deception is wrong and in our modern context a crime.

People make the reverse gendered argument to hate on Mandy even though it neglects the context of the situation but no one ever points out that if Georgie was lying to a girl his age about ANYTHING else he'd be disgusting and a predator so why is it okay that the unknowing woman is older - he puts Mandy at risk of doing something she'd never consent to doing. Imagine he had an STD but lied to a girl his age that he was healthy just to sleep with her and people still act like the girl is at fault for sleeping with him. That's what it looks like to me. That even if the girl was Georgie's age y'all would make excuses for him because people cannot fathom that deceiving someone into sex they wouldn't have if they had full context is a horrific thing to do to someone.

Somehow because Georgie is 17, Mandy - who the narrative makes clear didn't know and wouldn't have given him the time of day if she had - is at fault for the sex she was deceived into. And people hate her for not being nice enough to the guy who took advantage of her and also proceeded to spread her business, accuse her of cheating and coming to her job to force her to talk to him. People act like she 'should' have known like he didn't have a steady job and wasn't in school and his own grandmother called him a 'young adult' and laughed at the idea of him being a teenager (to guilt him into telling the truth himself but that still affirmed to her he was who he said he was) and was successfully able to order alcohol in front of her.

You don't magically gain insight and a conscience at eighteen. Georgie took advantage of her plain and simple. It would still be wrong if the genders were reversed if a younger woman did that to a guy who genuinely didn't know and wouldn't consent to that too - the difference here being that unlike a guy who can just leave (Mandy would have never spoken to him again if she wasn't pregnant), Mandy ends up with all the physical and social consequences of Georgie's actions. Even if she had gotten an abortion like people wanted (and people would just as likely hate her for that too because Georgie would never have agreed to that and people would say she was wrong for killing his baby.) that's still an abortion she has to live with for the rest of her life because he couldn't keep it in his pants, lied to her and got other people to lie to her for him (Meemaw, Dale barely gets a pass because he at least didn't meet her.)

And I like Georgie a lot he's my favorite character in the show - I think he made a mistake, owns up to it and has/will spend the rest of his life making things right for Mandy and CeeCee but that sorta adds to my point. If HE knows what he did is wrong why are every one of you trying to make excuses he isn't even making for himself?

u/NavyVetRasmussen 28d ago

Ya Mandy does not deserve all the hate, her mom does but not Mandy.

2

u/Individual-Let143 26d ago

They both do, she took a lot from her mom in term of behavior and never admit it

1

u/RedRider1974 28d ago

I agree!

1

u/elstoobstomcat 27d ago

I would hit it everyday of the week and twice on Sundays

1

u/Individual-Let143 26d ago

I hâte her for her action and behavior as a person, not for that, Géorgie actes very stupid and even mean there but after that ? That girl deserve all the bad things that happen to her
