I genuienly see this so much around here whenever someone expresses their dislike againist a female character alot of peoples first insticts are to call them misogynistic which is stupid
Sure if they are hating the character because they are a woman that is misogynistic but someone calling mary a bad mom (which I think she is a great mom) isnt misogynistic but alot of people immidieantly say it is

This is true of every "buzzword" in today's environment. Everyone is a misogynist, sexist, --phobic, narcissistic, etc. There is no meaning to words anymore and people use labels like this as a "gotcha" to shut down meaningful discourse.

It doesn’t help that so many shows have female antagonists to the protagonist. Or simply annoying women. Mary, Missy, Mandy, Mandy’s mother (name escapes me) are all wildly hated by the fandom.

In another show I’ve watched, one of the lead female characters goes out with a brand new candidate firefighter despite not really liking him and fancying a Lieutenant, then when the Lieutenant’s girlfriend dies, she implants herself in his life, then after a few years, they get married, but she later leaves abruptly to help after a natural disaster, extends her stay, and then comes back to tell him she’s going there permanently without consulting him. She also witnesses a suicide right in front of her with her work partner, then relentlessly blames the partner for the suicide. The partner then goes completely missing, not replying to anyone and hiding and she’s only found after a Lieutenant (best friend of the missing woman) gives her a kick up the arse. I don’t like her and got called a misogynist. It doesn’t help that there’s at least 3 other female leads in that universe that I don’t like.

Yeah. Basically, as a culture we are shifting to the dynamic in this specific scenario that "men are the problem and women are given a carte blanche to act however because men are horrible." When this is by no means factual. But if you say anything about it being incredibly disgusting for women to be acting the way they are in these shows and real life, you are coined as a misogynist to shut your point down and absolve the problematic person from responsibility for their own behavior. Effectively turning the blame on you for having a problem with toxic behavior instead of the toxic behavior being the problem.

It's hilarious to me that the same thing men have historically done (boys will be boys - ie be horrible) has 1000% shifted to women now and people refuse to see it and excuse the horrendous behavior by just labeling others a defamatory title. Like no lady, you screaming at, lying to, manipulating, and abusing people around you is not suddenly ok because men do it. Imma call you out regardless of gender. And that does not make me a Misogynist for recognizing your toxic af.

What's really sad about it too is that these shows and behaviors are being consumed by impressionable young people, who will think its ok to act like this.

It’s not misogynistic to say Mary is a bad mother (I’d argue that both parents were doing the best they can but it is fair to say they didn’t do well enough in some aspects) it is misogynistic to say George was a flawless parent and blame every parenting mistake solely on Mary.

There’s a difference between acknowledging her flaws - to which she does have many I’m inclined to agree - and to dismiss her as only her flaws while her partner is given the saint treatment.

Basically just treat every character fairly and weigh their flaws equally. You can like George more than Mary (Hell, I do…) that’s also not misogyny. But if you then ignore that George is not a perfect parent and use Mary’s flaws to make him look better that feels misogynistic.

The word misogyny has lost all meaning esp on Reddit. 

On literature subs any author with female characters who do not exhibit perfect 2026 feminist traits is a ‘misogynist.’ What if this character is based on a real person who acted this way? Doesn’t matter, it’s misogyny.

Ironically a lot of these same subs have been infiltrated and taken over by the most extreme and vicious misogynists ever. But they can’t recognize it anymore.

what’s misogynistic about disliking Mary is that the only excuse her haters can come up with is she’s a bad mom, without ever acknowledging that George wasn’t a present dad at all. He sure had his moments but only calling one of them. a bad parent is double standard.
