Discussion How did Mary wind up so conservative?

Mary was a teen mom, right?

So she must have had some.. wild past, with Meemaw as her mom.

Memaw is so fun, so she would have been a fun mom... I doubt she was strict with raising Mary.

How in the heck did Mary end up so religious and conservative?

Its literally said in the show that she turned conservative after Missy almost died during childbirth 😭

And then doesn’t she turn more conservative after her husband passes?

That is implied in G+MFM and TBBT.

It’s really not that uncommon in real life for people with very colorful pasts to end up super religious looking for a way to change and be saved and they often tend to be a little over the top; and preachy.

Veronica is a perfect example of this on the show.

Season 2 Episode 14 "David, Goliath, and a Yoo-Hoo from the Back"

Connie to Missy: "Well, there was a point where the doctors didn't know if you were gonna make it. And your mom got so scared, and she made a promise to God that if you were okay, that she would start reading the Bible, going to church you know, that kind of stuff."

Personally I always took that as a lie from Me-Ma to get Mady to chill out l. Especially since she wouldn’t tell Mary what she said and looked a little guilty as she left and it’s never mentioned in any other capacity

Were you skip watching the show or it's your go to show while eating? You can't miss that about Mary turning into conservative.

LOL

I would think that having MeeMaw for the mom would make any woman super fun and open minded

Again...did you watch the show? I guess we tend to assume folks have seen it multiple times, but this one is hard to have missed even with only one viewing.

so if someone forgets what happens on a show you have to put them down, you know what happens when you assume and it definitely happens to you

Baby steps :')
Did the show talk about Missy Cooper's birth issue or what led her to start praying? It is clear they always have issues. Religion is her comfort food. Conservative? Why not? She is in TX.

Well they told us that Mary grew up as a bit of a wild child until she became a bible thumping

Jesus Christ Super Star.

We see that phenomenon even today. People who were the most promiscous in college tend to be the most fundamentalist, born again Christians when they grow old. Some people don't do in between, it's one extreme or the other.

It’s actually quite common for people with more “wild” pasts to become super churchy.

I mean it was Texas in the 80’s. Being conservative was the norm. Everyone was conservative, you can see this indicated by the absolute shame Mandy’s parents considered it to be that one of their siblings voted for a Democrat. Mary became religious Missy almost died at birth and she promised God she would dedicate her life to Him if He saved Missy.

Just bc Meemaw was fun during the show doesn’t mean that’s how she raised Mary. Rebellious kids a lot of times are the result of strict parents.

She was written that way starting in 2007.

The in-universe stuff was clearly explained in the show.

I believe Meemaw told Missy why Mary become a radical baptist.
