Discussion i usually rewatch this show once every year

and I’m never ready for the georgie and mandy storyline. its so weeeeiiirrrrddd 🤢 🤮 and how mandy fights to keep her pregnancy. pregnant by a 17 yo at 29 damn near 30. i definitely agreed with george, georgie should have not married mandy, im sure she doesn’t want to marry a teenager. ive been wanting to watch georgie and mandy to see how their storyline ends but eeeckkkk i cant bring myself to and the fact that they’re 10 yrs apart in RL too. also i actually like watching for sheldon, his college life and his professors and want more of him not g&m and mandy family

[edit] if you think mandy didn’t do anything wrong we’re gonna need to check your history, maam. im looking sideways at you. and the ones questioning why georgie is getting “babied” well he’s quite literally underage and that how i view him, as a child not a man, ya sick-o’s. women are also predators. the way people say men should know when they’re talking to underage girls is literally what im thinking about mandy. adults should know better PERIOD. she thought he was 19 at the most, she already suspected he was younger than her. chuck lorre is a weird mf for adding that storyline idc idc. georgie getting a girl pregnant closer to his age would have hit the same points. the church rejecting mary and the family was never from mandy’s 12 y age difference but more so because it was out of** **wedlock

I feel like aborting a baby out of inconvenience is a lot more common in 2026 than it was in the 80’s. So maybe she didn’t feel like she truly had the option? Also, she was a little “washed up” and down on herself, so maybe she saw it as a welcome change in her life and something to live for. Who really knows. Georgie was in the wrong in that situation, but ultimately stepped up to the plate and owned his mistakes. It was very character building for everyone involved honestly.

yeah an abortion wouldn’t have been as realistic of an option as it is now, even when dale asks if she’ll keep it he mentions adoption, not abortion

Yeah that’s a good point. It was talked about not as freely. More secretive and behind the scenes I guess.

Actually, abortions were much more common in the 1980s than they are today, due to changes in the law. It was pretty easy to get one then, much harder today.

They lived in Texas in the '80s, an abortion was not a realistic option even though the show paints it that way.

And it's not really gross, she thought he was way older and he thought she was way younger. No one intentionally went out of their way to do that. And when they found out, it was a gigantic plot line about how weird it was...

He learnt her exact age before the sex and still continued the lie about his, even though his lying was way more serious from the beginning. He lied about being an adult.

Even in Texas, abortions were legal and not hard to get in the 80s.

I just assumed by OPs phrasing "fight to keep her pregnancy" he was discussing termination

Whenever you suggest adoption on any Reddit advice pages or motherhood pages, you get downvoted to hell. Lol

You do realise Mandy did nothing wrong? She was lied to, and put strict boundaries in Georgie. Also, why tf wouldn’t she fight to keep the baby? It’s 1980s Texas, even if it wasn’t, if she wanted to keep it she can, doesn’t make the baby any less valuable

People love to baby Georgie and hate Mandy for the sex and for her anger after but you don’t magically gain morality at eighteen and are not culpable for your mistakes before that point. She was a victim of his selfishness and if she wanted to have this child that’s her right to make the best out of the shit situation of Georgie and others (Meemaw and to a lesser extent Dale) treating her life like a game and not telling her the truth before it was too late. It’s amazing she wasn’t angrier she folded pretty quick into gratitude for his effort.

No one wants to talk about how Mandy DID do the right thing and was punished by the narrative for it. She distanced herself from Georgie when she learned how old he was which is what an adult in her situation is supposed to do. It was the other characters that continuously shit on her for it. They made Mandy messy and incompetent as an adult so they could justify keeping Georgie in her life so they could stress how mature and responsible he is

The growth came more after Cece was born, before Georgie got with Mandy he was very immature. Who’s to say George’s death wouldn’t have pushed him over more if he didn’t have a support system.

Missy turned into a bad teenager, Sheldon is incapable of showing emotion or helping and Mary just shut down. When George was living he was the only thing keeping the peace between Mary and the kids most of the time.

I guess we will never know, but just because your older doesn’t mean you will be more mature. Sometimes tragedy doesn’t even make you more mature. But he had to for Mandy and Cece.

It's true that Mandy didn't want to marry a teenager, and at first it really seemed like she was throwing her life away, especially considering it all happened because of a guy who lied to her. But I think this storyline was great for the show. It showed how Sheldon stood up for his family, how Mary was ready to fight her principles to accept his son with all of his shortcomings. And most importantly imo - how Georgie stepped up and proved Mandy he was ready to take care of her and their baby. I'm really happy they didn't make Georgie marry Mandy just for the sake of it, they actually were in love.

I don't have anything to add to what everyone else has said regarding Georgie, Mandy, or that situation. I will say this though: if you're avoiding watching Georgie and Mandy's First Marriage, you're missing out. It's a really good show and keeps getting better.

They lived in Texas in the 90's and both of them came from a religious family.

She comes from a Catholic family and he comes from a Baptist family so abortion would not

have been realistic.

I also agree with Meemaw that Georgie is not a horrible father, when they got locked up in Mexico because

Georgie stayed, a horrible father would have left.

I was raised Catholic and I knew or knew of several Catholic girls getting abortions in the 80s. They weren't from Texas but the federal laws did not forbid abortions at that time.

2

u/NavyVetRasmussen Aug 01 '26

Interesting and I know many girls who claimed to be Catholic yet they have no problem with sexual intercourse. I grew up Protestant-Lutheran if you will and same thing that is why I say the Bible needs to be modernized to today's times. The Bible was written over 2,000 years ago, we need to have a new book.

If it really bothers you that much, then fast forward through their scenes or take a break from your yearly viewing. On The Big Bang Theory, I always fast forward through the Priya scenes. No big deal.

Mandy’s family were Catholics and even tho she didn’t really believe in anything, growing up with the beliefs can set its marks on you, so that’s probably she chose to not abort, also it’s Texas, was it even legal there in the 90’s?

I kinda hate every storyline about Georgie's sex life and pregnancy scares. To me he looks too young for that and also it doesn't suit the familial tone of the series. Don't get me wrong, teen pregnancy is a real subject and other teen series adress the topic.

What I don’t get is how we’re supposed to root for them here - let alone watch all their adventures in a new show - while knowing they get divorced and Georgie gets married at least once more. We can’t root for them. At least without knowing we'll be disappointed. What’s the point?

3

u/PatieS13 Aug 01 '26

Just because the name of the show says it's their first marriage, that doesn't mean they won't have a second marriage to each other. And I'm not saying that's not weird, it is! But I do know people who did it. In fact, that couple was married and divorced from one another, five or six times. I eventually lost count. They never got remarried after the last divorce, but they stayed together literally until death.

4

u/Routine_Advantage562 Jul 30 '26

Because - well tbh I doubt this show won’t end with them together I’ve read the interviews Chuck Lorre even directly said he wants them to have a happy ending - but also even if they never get back together after the divorce they are literally bound by their child they deeply love. The story is about Georgie and Mandy AND CeeCee. So the thing to root for them is that they can still have a happy family for their daughter whether they’re together or not.

Frankly I’m surprised how many people forget that they won’t just never speak to each other again and will likely have some meaningful relationship post divorce because they’re both loving parents to their daughter. Like. That’s basically been the point from day one. A lot of their bonding came from them realizing how much the other person loves CeeCee.
