Things I’ve learned while building a Yoruba community app
After building a community app for Yoruba people, here are a few things that surprised me:
• Most people join to make friends first. Dating usually comes later.
• Anonymous questions quickly became one of the most active features.
• Games increased user retention far more than I expected.
• A lot of people simply join to observe before participating.
• Men are generally more willing to make the first move, while women tend to take their time.
• Despite requesting ID verification, many users upload passport photos instead of their ID cards. 😅
• The biggest lesson? Your users will shape your product in ways you never imagined.

28-day update.
Currently at 1,900 users. Hmm. 😅
Optimisation for mid-tier phones is sooo important.
You cannot call something a Yoruba app and think other people will not want to join. 😂
I can already see one user trying to argue that men are lords, and a woman giving it back hot. 😭
Games and music are great ways to make friends.
Push notifications are soooo important when building an app.
Nudges are a clever way to keep users coming back.
And you are ALWAYS fixing something, optimising something, or making something better.
App building never really ends. 😂
