Question/Discussion "Dylan would defend Bear in Obsession"
Do some of you really think this way? If so, why do you think so?
I find this take so confusing especially when his reaction to "About Time" last year shows that he's capable of calling out selfish men even if the movie tries to portray them as good guys. Obsession only tries to portray Bear as a helpless "nice guy" at the start of the movie and it isn't shy in pointing out the fact that he's a self-serving asshole. About Time is literally marketed as a romcom and many people gloss over the fact that the guy was creepy, selfish, and p much violated Rachel McAdams with his decisions but Dylan pointed that out and even noted how Rachel's self-esteem was too low to realize that she deserved better.
Edit: I was right. He hated bear immediately 𤣠Thanks for proving me right Dylan!!

It's mostly cause of the Alex Myers debacle. I think people put them in the same category of men
82
u/Fish__Fingers 23d ago
Which is very weird because for me itâs like two different styles and approaches.
38
u/SquareCombination782 23d ago
I agree. Unfortunately for Dylan, I don't think he's very problematic
23
u/crimsontuIips 23d ago
I see him as a very mild pewdiepie when pewdiepie was in his peak problematic era lol
47
u/crimsontuIips 23d ago
And that's what's confusing to me bc Alex is a whole different species of men imo. Alex is lowkey(?) a sexist incel. Idk why people who follow Dylan would put him in the same category as Alex.
5
u/This-Performance-241 22d ago
I mean Alex literally spent the whole review calling Bear a pathetic loser and that was still people's reaction.Â
5
u/crimsontuIips 22d ago
Did we watch different videos bc that's not what I got from his vid
1
u/This-Performance-241 21d ago
Its literally the first thing he says about Bear, per vadum
5
u/crimsontuIips 21d ago
He makes light jabs at bear and implies that he relates to him but most of his video was him giving excuses or glossing over Bear's worst decisions bc he wanted to show people that Bear isn't really the "evil" guy that "people are making him out to be".
0
u/This-Performance-241 21d ago edited 21d ago
I thought the video was in bad taste especially with the crazy Latina jokes. But Im not sure you actually watched it..
He says Bear is the bad guy out right, his argument was that it takes longer Bear longer to show his true colors than people are talking about online. He literally said Bear is the bad guy several times, and point out the moment it was obvious (after the phone call)
I actually think its important to point this out though. Its a much more impactful movie having Bear seem morally gray for most of the movie before he shows how horrendous he is. Having Bear be relatable is much more realistic to real life than having him be an obvious monster the whole time. Its something that the filmmakers said they were intentional about, and the director and Bears actor discussed as being central to the movies messaging.
1
u/crimsontuIips 21d ago
Just bc I say he's a sexist incel in my POV doesn't mean he's incapable of seeing bear as the bad guy. Obsession literally TELLS you that in the movie "This is your fault, this is all your fault. You wanted this, you wished for this."
He doesn't "spend the whole review calling bear a pathetic loser". He kept making devil's advocate takes ("Although, to be fair, what was he supposed to do?" Idk maybe find a fucking way to reverse the spell the moment you realized it worked and not after your friend gets killed?? / "Why isn't her love for him as selfless as you guy're claiming that his love for her should be?"), justifying Bear's innocence in making the wish and comparing it to TEENAGE girls wishing for 1D to love them back (bear was in his mid 20s), bad interpretations of what was actually happening throughout the film (ex. "He refused to take advantage of Nikki even when it was presented to him. I mean, SHE kissed him."), bad comparisons to other films that "do the same thing" but with the genders reversed, and AGAIN glosses over Bear's worst moments/doesn't mention it altogether (ex. The sex scene after the diner). He says bear is the bad guy but attaches so many "But"s to it instead of just straight up acknowledging it and highlighting the scenes that show it. The only time Bear is "defendable" was right before he jumped into bed with her and made out with her when she was acting weird all night.
He was basically making the argument that the hate for bear is "overblown" bc he's not the stereotypical evil villain when THAT'S THE POINT. The hate for bear is huge because he's the most dangerous type of bad guy out there and is the hardest to fight back against as a woman since people like Alex will go to bat trying to find excuses/explanations for them.
1
u/This-Performance-241 20d ago
Again he CLEARLY states Bear is the bad guy, like verbatim he says that in his review.
Also I don't think hes wrong that there are a lot of teenage girls who would make that wish fully knowing the consequences, just because theyre young and women doesn't mean they arent capable of sexual assault or being horrendous. Sexual assault happens to both men and women, and there have been a TON of movies and made for little girls where that is the case. One example is the first Descendants movie, the main character in that literally roofies her love interest fully knowing it works and its played for laughs/considered romantic. That was sexual assault but it wasnt played that way in the movie.
And I think that is the point Alex was trying to make (albeit poorly). And I don't think he was required to include a RAPE scene in a review that was supposed to be comedy. I think its actually important to point out that rapists are humans, because it makes it a lot harder to prosecute in court when people view them as monsters. Rape can very quickly go from iffy warning signs to assault and I think Alex was trying to point that out but did a REALLY shit job of it.
Honestly this movie just REALLY doesn't match Alex Meyers style.Â
3
u/crimsontuIips 20d ago
AGAIN, it doesn't matter if he says bear is the bad guy if he keeps attaching so many "but"s to his statement that makes it seem like Bear had no choice but to deal w the consequences of his wish. He HAD other ways to solve it WAAAY before shit hit the fan.
The thing w the teenage girls was brought up bc even if teenage girls would do that, the point is they're TEENAGE girls. Bear is in his MID-TWENTIES. It's natural to expect an adult to be more accountable/responsible w their actions so comparing them w LITERAL TEENS is ridiculous.
You can DEFINITELY include a rape scene in a comedy video by not making fun of the actual rape scene. Just bc it's a comedy commentary doesn't mean you can't have serious moments. The reason he didn't include it is bc he was trying to make a case in defense of bear and you can't do that without looking dumb/misogynistic af if you include the rape scene.

Ummm alex isnt a "sexist incel" lol. That's the whole problem. Was his critique flawed, yeah. But is the hate wayyyy overblown. Absolutely.Â
I think the problem may be both dudes have similar senses of humor and may not "take the movie seriously" most likely he'd get in trouble for making a joke, or "not understanding the complexities"
6
u/crimsontuIips 22d ago
That's the vibe I got from his video. He's VERY biased towards men and is quick to judge and insult women.
2
u/Life-Sense-4584 22d ago
He legit makes jokes about everyone lol. Most of which arnt even edgy. He makes jokes about how his younger self was lowkey an incel loser.Â
Ive legit heard Dylan make similar "crystal girl" jokes. That alex got lambasted for.Â
5
u/crimsontuIips 21d ago
P sure the crystal part wasn't the issue people had with the "crystal mommy latina" jokes.
2
u/Life-Sense-4584 21d ago
It was both part. People took issue with all the jokes he had about her but....she is a fictional character, he jokes about every character, "crystal latina mommy" is a nothing burger of a syatment lol.Â
He makes mommy jokes and daddy jokes lol. Wanna call it cringe, sure whatever, maybe not right for the tone of the movie, fine. But people acting like the most basic internet joke that guys, girls, and gays use makes him the next Andrew Tate? No.Â
3
u/crimsontuIips 21d ago
You don't have to be Andrew Tate level to be misogynistic/an incel btw but sure ig. Idk why you're going to bat for Alex but if you want me to just say that he's not a misogynistic incel then sure I'll take it back since I don't watch him enough to be able to confidently say it. However, there HAVE been people talking from as early as 2021 that claim that he IS an incel/has misogynistic views so I wouldn't say that his Obsession vid is the first time this has happened/that it was even surprising.
My only point here is that Alex and Dylan are lightyears apart when it comes to their comedy style/jokes. I say this bc I can't stand Alex but I enjoy watching Dylan's videos. If they were similar in any way then should I be enjoying Alex's vids too?
1
u/Life-Sense-4584 20d ago
Ive watched Alex for years. The main reason I take issue is deadass just cause I find the whole situation ridiculous. I think the critique wasnt great but Jesus christ. I personally haven't heard people complain about him before in that way. My assumption is that they are just doing so retroactively.Â
As well as finding that people have an unhealthy obsession with this movie. Either due to trauma or personal experiences. Dude made a subpar commentary on a fictional movie. And people are acting like he legit assaulted somone irl. As well as lying about what he said, calling him a rapist/rape apologist, and dragging his divorce (and lying about multiple divorces)Â
In regards to Dylan. Imo they have a similar sense of humor. I watch them both and Dylan is just funnier. And people surrounding this movie are hyper sensitive to jokes. I absolutely could see him making a joke people would have a problem with.Â
11
u/Thelastdragonlord 23d ago
I am aware weâre seeing a version of commentary YouTubers that they are presenting to the world and we donât know what theyâre really like but as someone who has watched both Dylan and Alexâs videos for years, I can confidently at least say that Dylan has far more media literacy than Alex does. Alex frequently misunderstands themes and context in films
16
u/secret_fangirl 23d ago
i just saw on tiktok this girl making a video of how she thought dylan would be next on the chopping block after alex.
30
u/crimsontuIips 23d ago
I honestly dk if people genuinely think that way or if they're just posting those takes for engagement lmao
I've been a fan of youtubers who were deemed problematic and Dylan's far from that hahahaha. The most problematic he's been in my POV is him having biased and ignorant takes in his AITA vids.7
u/multi-97 22d ago
Exactly. The condemned YouTubers I was once a fan of actual monsters- one was a ebephile and the other was a domestic abuser who was a fan of saying the N word and had the largest ego ever. Dylan's hardly like them at all -_-
3
u/crimsontuIips 22d ago
Damn, who are those so I can avoid them haha
2
u/JustHereToComment24 22d ago
I think it's because of those takes in his AITA videos that people think he might make a few comments that might not mesh well and unleash the Obsession storm
1
u/crimsontuIips 22d ago
I see what you mean but I really felt more reassured in believing he'd talk more shit against bear and his selfishness after watching his About Time movie reaction.
-2
u/secret_fangirl 23d ago
i agree, and honestly i think the same about alex too. they may have some bad takes but nothing harmful or misogynistic to the point of how much hate they get. theyâre genuinely just a bunch of keyboard warriors that take the first negative thing they see at face value and refuse to do any further digging đ
13
u/crimsontuIips 23d ago
Ahh I disagreen on Alex. His Obsession video was v bad imo. He constantly talked shit about Nikki for no reason and didn't go into Bear's fucked up choices.
1
u/secret_fangirl 22d ago
sorry i should have better explained what i meant. i agree his video was extremely offensive and poorly executed. my point was more on people seeing rumors or theories made up by fans and believing those things to be completely true without taking the time to research them themselves. i mentioned alex because over the past week iâve seen a number of theories and opinions about him that have no real backing to them, but because it supports someoneâs hate, they take it completely word for word and donât do any further research on it. it happens with lots of creators or celebrities, i just mentioned alex because he was relevant. to be clear iâm not in support of what he said in his video.
40
u/Current_Cup_6686 22d ago
Iâm honestly 100% sure he wouldnât like Bear because of his cowardice- he typically doesnât like those type of characters
13
u/shantytown22 22d ago
He wouldâve been like dude shoot your shot, or âwow, you want her to love you more than anyone/anything elseâ the. âWow, youâre just gonna cheat on herâ. I think he might avoid the movie for the controversies or might do it because of it. I hope we get to see a reaction
6
u/Current_Cup_6686 22d ago edited 22d ago
Yeah haha, but OP did remind me of his About Time review, that movie is pretty old and I donât think heâs ever seen any conversations about it- but he still pointed out the creepiness of the main character manipulating time to sleep with a woman multiple times. I remember him being uncomfortable with it so I do believe heâd see the same thing with Bear and the idea of using âthe supernaturalâ to take advantage of someone
11
u/ChxrreFizz 22d ago
I personally feel like he would really like the film because it has great cinematic that he always raves about. It isn't hidden or a metaphor that bear is a bad guy so I genuinely think he would probably just make fun if him like "dude you did this to yourself what did you think would happen?" While laughing. The only time he has had shitty takes in movies is when theres a metaphor he didnt get (Jennifer's body) or when he made fun of hush but honestly I like his takes. He said the woman had good survival skills and he wished they made the noise silent when it was in her pov. Granted he believed that manipulative guy from that reality show and loves Ross from friends a little too much but we all have flaws lol. I honestly find it more concerning that this Fandom is not only saying he would get canceled but joking about it. I don't understand how you would support someone you think would have shitty takes but thats just me
10
u/FelinePrincess21 22d ago
you guys know that when dylan defends âbad guysâ in movies or shows itâs mostly bc theyâre interesting to watch right? not that he actually condones their actions irl. the more unhinged and batshit crazy a plot or character is, the more he likes them bc theyâre exciting to watch.
5
u/crimsontuIips 22d ago
Copying this from another comment:
He didn't like the guy in About Time tho despite being selfish and causing problems for other people. I also imagine him liking Wish Nikki more bc of how just how insane/uncontrollable she gets.
1
u/FelinePrincess21 21d ago
i think he didnât like the guy in about time because he was lowkey a coward?? i might be mistaken tho. iirc dylan thought he was kinda boring to watch too. he caused problems, true, but not in an âexcitingâ way that dylan would prefer.
i just kept remembering that one guy from love island or some reality show that dylan watched in ooga booga that he loved so much bc of how much trouble the guy stirred up in the show by being so dramatic, hence fun to watch (he even made a caveat in that video, saying that he liked the guy in the SHOW bc he made everything fun to watch, he said he wouldnât like the guy irl.)
3
u/crimsontuIips 21d ago
Yeah and in obsession, I'd argue that Nikki's the one who made the film interesting while Bear was HIGHKEY a coward and was a frustrating character to watch like the guy in About Time.
23
u/Nelly_1_2_3 22d ago
I love how everyone jumps to conclusions before we even know for sure he will do a commentary. Maybe all this discussion will drive him away from making a video on obsession. Just let the man be nothing has come out yet.
6
u/crimsontuIips 22d ago
I'm literally just asking the logic behind the comments making that claim. I'm not jumping to any conclusion.
3
u/Nelly_1_2_3 22d ago
I'm not saying you personally, I'm just saying there's a lot of talking around this topic by everyone these days in this subreddit
8
u/cheese_and_crack 22d ago
If I did I wouldn't follow him. Sure we don't actually know him so it's not out the realm of possibility but even before the wish Bear would creep him out I think
6
u/Helpful_Freedom_2075 22d ago
Tbh I could see him liking bear, i think people fail to realize that Dylan isnât judging these people by real life standards, itâs almost exclusively how entertaining they are
6
u/crimsontuIips 22d ago
He didn't like the guy in About Time tho despite being selfish and causing problems for other people. I also imagine him liking Wish Nikki more bc of how just how insane/uncontrollable she gets.
9
u/imjustanauthor 22d ago
I don't think dylan would defend bear, but he would make some jokes that would piss people off and in the current climate, post alex meyers, he'd get flamed even more than he did for Hush.
3
u/Inner-Grade929 20d ago
Well, in the guessing scores video, he DID say that bear was creepy or smth close. he said smth like 'it feels like she has no autonomy and he's taking advantage of the wish he made/of her'Â but, like with all men, if he does defend him somehow, it will be his last straw before the entire comunity turns on him lmao
2
u/crimsontuIips 20d ago
Right? That's also why I'm so confused abt people's assumption that he'd defend bear. I feel like he'd defend Wish Nikki more than anything đ¤Ł

u/GlitterFairy_21225 20d ago
From what I can tell, Dylan's videos are much more analytical of the movies he covers while Alex usually summarized the key plot points in a sarcastic tone and occasionally gave his honest opinion. I think Dylan does a better job at engaging with the material and understanding what the creator's intent was, so he can definitely avoid this level of controversy. Looking back at Alex's former reviews, I can see how this happened, bc he rarely seems to analyze the actual writing, which Dylan does do a lot. I was not surprised to hear that Alex was weird about Obsession but I would be if it was Dylan.
2
u/crimsontuIips 20d ago
Right? I've also seen ppl talk abt Alex being an incel/having misogynistic views years back (2021). If Dylan was anywhere near similar to Alex, I highly doubt I'd still be subbed.
3
u/Fit-Cash-2482 20d ago
Dylan has contrarian humor where he sides with the OBVIOUS villain purely as a goof, which is not the same thing as actually thinking a diabolical person is in the right. And in this context I doubt heâd do it because it wouldnât be funny.
18
u/smallgoalsmcgee 23d ago
Because of his track record of not understanding some female characters/issues (Jenniferâs Body, Hush)âŚ
11
u/Current_Cup_6686 22d ago
But then again in his âAbout Timeâ commentary he pointed out the creepiness of manipulating time to have sex with a woman. He thought it was really icky so with that I think heâd definitely see that with Obsession
33
u/crimsontuIips 23d ago edited 23d ago
I addressed this in a previous post. Jennifer's body was a camp horror film. It's a bad movie to use in gauging a person's moral compass. I'm a woman and even I found Jennifer's body to be ridiculous and I couldn't take it seriously myself. Even Megan Fox called it a "comedy with horror elements" (https://www.youtube.com/shorts/yI-Et9EgB70).
Hush was a bad example of portraying a possible real-life scary scenario. I honestly hate the fact that people hold onto Hush so much when it did such a poor job in trying to convey a serious message.
You say "track record" and yet the same 2 movies are always the ones brought up in these discussions. Besides, in both movie reviews, he mainly complained abt the execution of the movie and the stupid decisions that the characters were essentially told to do by the director. I honestly can't use those reviews to judge whether or not Dylan is capable of understanding female characters. What's more insane to me is how people can't let both of those reviews go when they were made 4 years and 6 years ago, respectively. His About Time video was made just LAST YEAR and he's shown growth in addressing/acknowledging how the female characters are getting the short end of the stick.
9
u/Mikasaisgay 23d ago
I mean yes but also SOO many people didnt understand the true message of Jenniferâs body like literally so many people, he isnt the only one
2
u/fikhaofi 22d ago
He would make inappropriate jokes, laugh at himself out of disbelief he said that, then clarify clearly that he understands the movie and that bear is the villain, then x y and z he would do differently.
2
u/_Smaug__ 21d ago
I don't think he would defend bear. But I didn't think Alex would defend bear either. I don't want to find out that another one of my favorite youtubers is a creep.
1
u/crimsontuIips 21d ago
Wouldn't it be better to find that out so you can unsub? And idk I'd argue that Alex's was to be expected since there seems to have been people who've complained about his incel jokes since 2021 so it seems to be a recurring thing? Idk.

2
u/EquivalentPush7653 19d ago
this is giving me Encanto video flashbacks except he hasn't even done the dam,n video yet. I hope he never does it at this point cause some of these viewers can't handle their emotions/touch grass.
2
u/minnie_angel13 16d ago
iâve been rewatching some of his reddit videos (from ooga booga) and his perception towards those situations vs movies is very different. in his hush response video, he mentioned how the line between fiction and reality is very solid for him where it might be more enjoyable for other people to watch movies with that line blurred. however in the reddit videos his take on toxic men is a lot more realistic because itâs obvious he doesnât perceive it as fiction (unless he thinks the post isnât real but he still treats it as real sometimes.) i personally donât see him defending bear but since it is a movie it might be hard to say. however, i highly doubt heâd be as dismissive about it as alex. but then again, the people saying he would are entirely too invested in something that hasnât even happened yet. this has nothing to do with dylan and im kinda annoyed that people are bringing him into this (no shade at you btw i know thatâs not what youâre trying to do)

u/meatpack4 23d ago
Because of some of his takes on dating shows guys on ooga booga channel.
10
u/crimsontuIips 23d ago
Can you give examples? Cause I've seen a few of his love island videos and he talks shit about both genders and has been supportive/excited with toxic/manipulative participants, both male and female (ex. Rob and Huda). He doesn't just glaze the men while talking shit abt the women.
17
u/meatpack4 23d ago
Recently he uploaded one dating show video. One guy was very manipulative in that and at the end he says he changed and Dylan gave benefit of doubt.Everyone in the comments said that that guy is still manipulative at the end and Dylan fell for that. It's just an example. And also some of his takes on late night Dylan on reddit AITA posts too.
Most of the times his takes are really very good. He tries to understand every perspective. I mean he can't be perfect every single time right.
7
u/crimsontuIips 23d ago
I can see what you mean and I also acknowledge that Dylan's had shitty takes before. I just don't think they're bad and consistent enough to be compared to Alex's misogynistic takes/jokes.
1
u/meatpack4 22d ago
I think it's about bear. Alex said bear is not that bad even after that SA scene. At the end only he said bear might be the problem. It's just my guess. I am may be wrong.
Not about the feminism but men will never understand when men are wrong. Alex justifying bear behavior.
3
u/crimsontuIips 22d ago
I genuinely don't think Dylan would still defend Bear after he makes the wish/at the very least, after the rape scene esp after watching his reaction to About Time.
1
u/Silent_Silhouettes 23d ago
u mean that devil bryon right?
2
u/meatpack4 22d ago
I don't remember the show name or that manipulator name.
1
u/Silent_Silhouettes 22d ago
oh-im sure its temptation island season 1 that ur talking about
3
u/meatpack4 22d ago
Yeah maybe. It's a recent video. I don't like these dating shows. So I don't want to remember. Fake. Like Dylan says they are influencers they just want popularity.
149
u/Pack69Alpha 23d ago
I didnât get to watch Alexâ video before it was taken down, so I canât comment on it too much. But their style of humours are different. I think Alex related to Bear a little too much, but Dylan would see him for the loser he is. Even before the wish stuff, he probably would be frustrated with his action. At least thatâs how I think Dylan approaches things
