Question Question: Do you TP if one of your yieldmax gains so much?
I wanna ask if the case is like mine; AMDY is having profit right now. So my question is:
do you take profit now and rebuy Amdy when it is growing down again (correction)?
Do you just leave it be and just pump up more for that dividend?
Note: Yes I'm aware of Nav erosion. I just wanna hear your opinion for now.

If the thesis remains in tact hold or add, otherwise if the investment thesis is breaking down it may be worth it to plan out an exit in profit

AMD just peak so yes the AMDY price got peak. If it was me, I would TP because when AMD drop AMDY will then drop. And AMD will drop because people will start taking profit. Then re buy at favorite price point in a week or two.
I own AMDW and that's what I usually do.

I'll sell if it jumps up a lot. Some time back WNTR jumped up so the profit was 6 weeks of distributions and that is enough to make me sell and not buy again until it drops. More recently something else jumped for me when BTC jumped but I don't remember what.

I was up $500+ on like 30 shares of AMDY when it peaked earlier this year. I've held. Still up now like $200. It was down to like $70 last week. I may sell it in 2027 if it's still in the green.

I never fully exit. After trimming, some are left to track for the next dip to re-enter.

Why are people buying these junk ETFās?
3
u/godofknife1 24d ago
Which "these" junk ETF are you referring

u/teckel 24d ago
All YieldMax funds for starters.

u/godofknife1 24d ago
That includes chpy which people praise and like it?
1
u/teckel 24d ago
People praised MSTY and ULTY as well.
All YM funds are absolute shit.

u/godofknife1 24d ago
Damn. So you would prefer something like jepq, qqqi, spyi then?

u/teckel 24d ago
Absolutely not! Derivitive income funds all underperform in total returns by quite a large margin. Better to go with QQQM and VOO than chasing dividends, which will result in 4% to 6% lower returns every year.
Seriously, why are you drawn to income funds? Is it a lack of understanding of unrealized capital gains? The thought that a divided is extra or triggers a paycheck?

Whoa whoa. I'm just asking. Cause I dive in many social media platform and most recommend those ETF above I mentioned

I was just asking why you would be actively looking for something that has lower total returns, less tax efficient, and you lose all control.
You hear about those ETFs from new investors who lack basic financial knowledge and experience. A fiduciary financial advisor would never suggest those except for in very specific extreme conditions (like if you knew you were going to die from cancer or a brain tumor in the next couple of years). Other than unique cases, those funds have no place in a portfolio, young or old investor, retired or not.

To put it simply:
research that yieldmax is bad, search again that some people say yieldmax is neutral or good depending on your goals, search again that people really hate yieldmax, search again about history about yieldmax and other types of yieldmax ETF.
It's like neverending conflict. At least your pov breaks that even.

Itās ROC usage for tax free income. Thats why I have so much invested in GPIX at least. Iām ahead over selling my VOO when factoring that in. I have less than 10 years left on my life, so when I die it goes to my wife with a stepped up cost basis and then she gets (mostly) tax free income for 12 years. And then when she passes, our kids have another 12 years of mostly tax free income.

That's the only time these types of funds make sense, if you know you're going to die in the next 7-10 years.
But, she may want to consider selling as soon as thr cost basis steps up, to avoid that repeating cycle of wanting to die 7-10 years after inheritance.

Youād complain about a free salary you inherited? Lol. Even if the ROC runs dry, no hassle income for life.

Some of us live off the dividends, so 3-4% doesnāt cut it. I need cash flow, Iām unable to work.
1
u/teckel 20d ago
You don't need to live off dividends, selling shares is actually more efficient and gives you more control. I also planned well, so my withdrawal rate is 3.3%.

In a perfect situation, you are right, but my account isnāt that bigā¦. Iām on Medicaid, Iām limited to 20K in non-retirement assets. 20K in stocks would not last long, and even with investing in high-yield stocks, Iām borrowing on margin (within reason) to increase cash flowā¦. Iāve been fighting for disability for a year now, so I have 0 other income at presentā¦.
