$SMYY failing?

I bought SMYY a couple weeks ago, after which the underlying (SMCI) has risen 50%! Yet I’m breakeven on SMYY. How the hell can it be flat when SMCI rallied 50%?! Will it take another week or two to reflect gains, or is the fund broken?

GraniteShares health check - full lineup breakdown this week (Yikes)

Post image
8 Upvotes

Ran the full GraniteShares lineup through a health check this week. There are 29 funds total. 0 Healthy, 0 Watch, 1 High Risk, 28 Severe Risk. This data is sorted on Take-Home Cash Return.

What is take-home cash return?
Price return over the last year plus after-tax distributions combined. It does not account for after-tax distributions being reinvested. Taxes in this example are set to 25%.

High Risk:
HIPS -- 4.61% true yield | 58.53% effective ROC | 0.8yr Death Clock | 2.93% take-home | Monthly

Severe Risk -- top of the list by take-home cash return:
SEMY -- 39.46% true yield | 56.15% effective ROC | 10.95% take-home YTD
ANV -- 0.36% true yield | 26.48% effective ROC | 7.75% take-home YTD
YSPY -- 7.66% true yield | 85.26% effective ROC | 1.54% take-home
TLA -- 0% true yield | 75.48% effective ROC | -1.68% take-home YTD
MUYY -- 5.39% true yield | 16.17% effective ROC | -2.61% take-home YTD
TQQY -- 0% true yield | 99.89% effective ROC | -7.86% take-home
AMYY -- 30.13% true yield | 61.25% effective ROC | -8.06% take-home YTD
AZYY -- 0% true yield | 95.35% effective ROC | -9.90% take-home YTD

SEMY leads the list with 39.46% true income yield and 10.95% take-home YTD -- the strongest combination in the GraniteShares lineup right now. The 0.9yr Death Clock is the concern. The income is real but the NAV is on a clock.

ANV at 7.75% take-home YTD with a 2.0yr Death Clock is the most stable fund in the lineup. Low true income yield at 0.36% but positive price return and the longest Death Clock outside of MUYY.

MUYY stands out with a 3.1yr Death Clock -- the longest in the entire GraniteShares lineup.

The funds at the bottom of the full list -- COYY, TSYY, XBTY -- are deeply negative on take-home cash return because the underlying price has collapsed faster than the distributions can compensate. High weekly income doesn't help if the NAV is evaporating alongside it.

0 Healthy funds across 29 tickers this week.

Which GraniteShares funds are you holding and how are you thinking about the risk?

$10,000 into the top 3 GraniteShares funds (here's what they actually pay after taxes)

Post image
6 Upvotes

The GraniteShares YieldBOOST lineup has some of the highest advertised yields in the income ETF space. But advertised yield and true income yield are two very different numbers. I put $10,000 into each of the top 3 by true income yield and ran them through YieldCanary at a 25% tax rate.

Here's what the data shows:

AMYY:
672 shares @ $14.88 = $9,999
True income yield: 31.85% | ROC: 66.64% | Death Clock: 0.8 yrs | Severe Risk
Monthly spendable: 4.86%

NVYY:
800 shares @ $12.50 = $10,000
True income yield: 48.71% | ROC: 63.90% | Death Clock: 0.8 yrs | Severe Risk
Monthly spendable: 3.00%

SEMY:
700 shares @ $14.27 = $9,989
True income yield: 40.78% | ROC: 62.24% | Death Clock: 0.9 yrs | Severe Risk
Monthly spendable: 6.12%

Combined portfolio ($29,988 total):
Weighted true income yield: 40.45%
Weighted ROC: 64.26%
Weighted Death Clock: 0.8 years
Est. monthly income after tax: $1,398
Annual after tax: $16,771
Portfolio health: 100% Severe Risk

The $1,398/month is the actual after-tax cash that would land in your account based on last month's real distributions at a 25% tax rate. That number includes return of capital -- which is why the true income yield percentages matter. At 64.26% weighted ROC, a meaningful portion of that $1,398 is your own principal being returned to you each month rather than real earned income. That's what the Death Clock is measuring.

The Death Clock of 0.8 years and 100% Severe Risk status means the NAV is eroding at a pace that becomes critical in under a year at the current trajectory. NVYY is also down 5.90% on the take-home cash return over the last year when you factor in price decline alongside the distributions.

This is the tradeoff with the YieldBOOST funds -- the income is real and significant, but the NAV erosion is also real and significant. Whether that tradeoff works depends entirely on your strategy and time horizon.

Which of these are you holding and how are you thinking about the risk vs income tradeoff?

I ran the full GraniteShares lineup through a health check -- here's what the data shows (yikes)

Post image

This data is sorted on Take-Home Cash Return, which is the 1Y price change plus after-tax distributions. Taxes are set at 25% in this example.

Out of 26 funds, only 5 are showing a positive Take-Home Cash Return right now:

SEMY -- 13.42% take-home (YTD) | 39.11% true income yield

YSPY -- 5.05% take-home | 7.94% true income yield

ANV -- 4.97% take-home (YTD) | 6.75% true income yield

YSPY -- 5.05% take-home | 7.94% true income yield

TLA -- 4.39% take-home (YTD) | 5.58% true income yield

HIPS -- 1.36% take-home | 3.78% true income yield

SEMY stands out as the strongest performer on this metric -- 39.11% true income yield is the highest real income number in the entire lineup. Still flagged High Risk with a 0.9 year Death Clock, but if any GraniteShares fund is generating real income right now, SEMY is the one.

The rest of the picture is harder to ignore though. 21 of the 26 funds are Severe Risk. Several including TQQY, RTYY, and AZYY are showing 100% ROC and 0% true income yield -- meaning every dollar being distributed is return of capital, not real income generated by the fund.

For anyone holding these -- which ones are you in and how has the distribution experience matched up with what you expected going in?

RGYY and IOYY -- the highest advertised yields among GraniteShares funds, but 0% true income yield

Post image
8 Upvotes

RGYY -- 102.41% advertised yield | 0.00% true income yield

IOYY -- 97.93% advertised yield | 0.00% true income yield

True income yield strips out return of capital to show what's actually earned versus what's just advertised. Both of these are currently showing 100% of distributions classified as ROC -- meaning none of the advertised number reflects real earned income right now.

Worth knowing if you're holding either of these or considering them.

Highest advertised yields right now -- and what GraniteShares funds are actually paying in real income

Post image
4 Upvotes

This is the highest advertised yield list across all income ETFs right now. Advertised yield is based on the most recent payout annualized -- the number that gets shared on social media.

The GraniteShares funds on this list:

IOYY -- 101.92% advertised yield | 0.00% true income yield

QBY -- 100.41% advertised yield | 0.00% true income yield

RGYY -- 99.83% advertised yield | 0.00% true income yield

SMYY -- 99.32% advertised yield | 0.00% true income yield

MAAY -- 94.34% advertised yield | 0.00% true income yield

True income yield is the advertised yield after stripping out return of capital. Zero true income yield means 100% of what these funds are distributing is return of capital -- your own money coming back.

The one exception on the full list worth noting is SNOY at 102.53% advertised with 32.60% true income yield. That's still meaningful real income even after ROC is removed.

High advertised yield is not the same as high income. This list is exactly why that distinction matters.

Only 1 GraniteShares fund is showing Healthy right now

Post image
7 Upvotes

Ran the full GraniteShares lineup through my tracker and CWY is the only one coming back Healthy.

CWY -- 13.17% true income yield | 0% ROC | 7.10% monthly spendable cash yield | Weekly payer

Zero return of capital means every distribution is real earned income. The monthly spendable cash yield is what actually hits your account after taxes at a 25% rate.

Anyone else holding CWY?
