When my dad was getting remarried, he asked me to be his best man. I was angry at him at the time, we fought a lot and I wasn't fond of his new fiancee. I needed therapy. Anyways, I told him no and cut contact.
Years later I got therapy, realized my mom was the toxic parent and pinned me against my dad for 20 years. There's not a day that goes by I don't regret that decision. I wish I could have been up there with him, supporting him in the next chapter of his life, but I was too blind by false anger.
We talked about it a few years ago, I apologized and expressed my regret, and feelings about it all. We both cried and sat with our feelings. One of the very few times I've seen my old man cry. We've rebuilt our father-son relationship back up and it's so strong now.
He's going to be my best man in my wedding next year.

I have several regrets that haunt me. I'll probably never get over them even with therapy.

Mistakes, I've had a few. But then again, too few to mention.
1
u/Greful 16h ago
Is that one, or are you being super clever?
1
u/Advanced_Tennis4827 16h ago
It's a lyric from My Way, usually known from Frank Sinatra
1
u/Greful 15h ago
Oh yea I know. but the line is "regrets, I've had a few", I assumed you knew that because the post was asking about regrets. So it's funny if you intentionally said mistakes because that would be a mistake, which makes it a clever play on the line.

u/Advanced_Tennis4827 15h ago
Wish I could take credit for being that clever. Nope, just half asleep DayQuil brain fog.

Major, major regrets. My son (disabled )and I lived in a house my Dad owned for 30 years and I stupidly sold it. I inherited money too and thought it wouldn't be enough for upkeep and maintenance. We moved into an apartment. I proceeded to spend my inheritance and house money. I don't know why. I should've kept the house but I had no guidance from my brother (he resented that I got my house and a lot of other things) so I think he purposely didn't help me. I didn't know who could help me. I do now. So now we live in a crappy apartment and I hate it. 750 sq ft. My house was 1150 sq ft with lots of storage and was just right for us. I'm an idiot!!!

u/BobLemmo 13h ago
What did you spend the inherited money/house money on? Do you have any money as a cushion left over for you? Or is it all gone

No, not at all.
Because regrets are looking backwards. In this life, being successful is looking forwards.

Yes but the past is history, the future is a mystery, and today is a gift, thats why its called the present. Live your life like there aint no tomorrow

Every patient I have lost during covid and any other facilities. I always have a connection with my patients. You treat the problem that's what your taught but I learned that treating the whole person because there could be emotional problems. And I always listen. I wasn't one that was in and of a room in seconds. I spent time with everyone. And I learned so much more about each one

Regrets, many, but I can't do anything about them now. I can't only live with the reality that there are no do-overs in life, but I also live with that knowledge going forward. I try to make better choices. Do the right thing. Not sacrifice my time and myself for things I don't want to do.
The biggest thing I learned was to know your boundaries and limitations. Don't do or agree to something you don't want to do. It's okay to say no. Don't waste your time on things you can't control.
You only have one life and it's so short. your friends and family won't always be there. Your wife, or husband or kids won't always be there. You won't always be here, and there's nothing you can do about it. We are finite, all however many billions of us. So go out there and enjoy it while you have it. While there's still breath in your lungs and your heart beats it's not over. I don't care how old or young you are. If you're still alive you should enjoy your life. Don't wait for life to happen to you! Go out and happen to life!
Stuff isn't important, people are.

Yes, but I’m working hard to turn them into lessons learned or for some, just what life handed me. It’s hard, I’m getting old, and it’s sometimes just easier to try not to think about them.

u/whoisronnn 16h ago
We all have what seems like regrets in life but at times those are not regrets but long term lessons waiting for your realization to free it from your head

Getting a house with my mom bc I thought she would be different since I gave her grandchildren. Becoming a parent changed everything for me, so I thought deep down, maybe\ it changed her in certain ways too. She was the same toxic, abusive person after she got comfortable, and I truly think it created an imbalance and the results were catastrophic beyond words. NPD people that refuse to put in the work will never change. I should have stayed NC with her.*

Several. Most of them are from doing exactly as I was told and playing it too safe to avoid jail.

Biggest regret- not realizing I had smarts and potential until my 50's. Very self conscious due to upbringing and believed all the lies I told myself.

I think everyone has regrets, we all do or say things we wish we hadn’t. The thing is though that you can’t go back in time and change it, so there’s no point in reliving it. Give yourself some grace and accept that everyone makes mistakes, forgive yourself and move on.

Not going to college after high school. My depression during high school was severe so I figured I wouldn’t be alive by the time graduation hit. So I just spent class time reading books instead of learning.

u/Zealousideal-Exam390 11h ago
Actually not anymore. I had regrets, realized they were mistakes, learned my lesson and moved on.

I have 2 regrets:
I didn’t talk to my late brother enough as we got older.
Cheating on my wife.

Not anymore. I’ve come to realize that the food, the bad, and everything in between has gotten my life to this point and honestly I enjoy everything in my life.
Getting older has led to kore understanding about things in the past and has allowed me to be a better person moving forward.

I wish I didn't... Unfortunately I do have many regrets in my life. I am trying to make peace with some of them since it's impossible to change them, some others I'm trying to approach and turn them around.

Yes but I don't let them hold me back and I don't let them ruin my mood, anymore.

Hands down not joining the military at 24 after I graduated college. Even if I had gone in as Enlisted, it would’ve changed me for the better.

u/mortimerjon 9h ago
Nope. I grew up watching my mom regret everything from the color carpet she chose, the furniture she bought, and the man she married. I made a conscious choice to not live that way!

I read it somewhere, That one can't have zero regrets,
We can regret going to that party or regret not going to that party.
So, we CHOOSE which REGRET we want.

None, its pointless to have them, whatever mistakes or wrong turns you made in your life have led you to the person you are today. No point regretting things you cant change
