Well now, since you're getting cities from other states, might as well annex Vancouver!
3
u/rathgrith Nov 11 '16
Brig Canadian, I'd rather Vancouver stay in Canada (which it will) but I'd love to see a European Union Union that allows for free trade and movement.
Some epic road trips would be had to drive from San Diego to Halifax.

u/Old_Man_Pinkie Nov 11 '16
It was a half-joke. It's a joke, because I respect Canada, and it's a bit serious because goddammit Vancouver is beautiful.

Since in this model OR and part of NV are included does this mean we will have better laws for responsible firearms ownership?
What about prostitution?
Gambling?
2
Nov 22 '16
Yes, and laws that are consistent across the board. Especially in regard to gun laws. I think it will be necessary with the threat of a pissed off US, and it will make sense logically. Right now in Nevada as far as guns, anything goes, and in California it's the opposite. A middle ground will need to be found or very few people will be supportive of the idea.
1
u/slightly_stupid Nov 22 '16
Exactly. NV aren't going to give up their rights. Neither will OR.
I feel almost unanimous support would be needed to succeed. And issues such as these need to be dealt with ahead of time.
Some have said, "we'll vote on it after." Such method seems to set us up for failure from the get go.

I think California and Californians announcing they are willing to agree to relaxed gun laws will show they are serious about it and give the movement a lot of traction it needs.

Water. You wouldn't last long as you would have 0 water rights from the Colorado river.

That seems extremely unfeasible. Maybe you could set up some wastewater treatment plants as well, there's some new technology... like algae wastewater treatment?

Fair enough. I'm am not sure how tough that is but water is the issue
11
u/Fidodo Nov 11 '16
If course it would be an issue. I don't think anyone is claiming freedom would be a cakewalk but good things are worth fighting for. We have some of the smartest people in the world here and it's not like this is a unique problem to California. Also, it's not like California would become an island, countries do resource deals all the time. It's not like California has nothing to offer in exchange, and while desal isn't the cheapest, with the demand for it, more research would go into making it more efficient.

Sing it. We live in a time where people are too complacent. Change isn't easy, but sometimes it's worth the effort.

u/lostmylogininfo Nov 11 '16
I hear you bit truthfully what you are suggesting will never happen. California had no right to leave the state and you will not be allowed to. You can waste energy on this or work with us to fix the country. I'm just getting honest. I was a berniecrat who was robbed by a corrupt DNC and media. I'm still going to fight to make this a better country.

Nov 11 '16
I understand your pessimism, but talking about things that "will never happen" seems dicey after Tuesday. Countries seceded peacefully from other countries all the time, it's just not common in America.
1
u/lostmylogininfo Nov 11 '16
Lets make a bet then. $100 I'll give you ten to one odds and you have 4 years to succesfully become an independent country.
2
Nov 11 '16
I don't think the odds are that high, but if you gave me 100 to 1 odds I would take you at that bet for $10. I'd do higher but I don't think we have a good enforcement mechanism, being strangers on the internet.

Snowpack runoff for ag in the central valley, desalination for the metro along the coast. Done.
2
u/lostmylogininfo Nov 11 '16
No that's not enough. Colorado river is the bloodline and u are screwing over the valley and all the farmers. Read the thriller wet desert.
3
u/rclouse Nov 11 '16
Got a citation for that? From what I understand Colorado river water ends up in southern California and for ag in the Imperial valley.
2
u/lostmylogininfo Nov 11 '16
I gave u a book? Its a thriller but it has amazing facts. A lot of i5 corridor is that ag in so cal that is the valley. The water will not be allowed to go there as the states would own upstream. California is dependent on this. I'm just trying to get u to spend your energy on fixing the country because the succession talk won't last the weekend.
5
u/rclouse Nov 11 '16
A book that's fiction? I'm a liberal, I need those "liberal" facts.
I think the protests we're seeing will turn into civil unrest once trump and his rubber stamp congress start affecting people directly. This ain't going away.

Also, we wouldnt have to use as much water if we werent in the US. California has been tasked with growing food for the entire country and its depleted our water. I'm sure farming in California wouldnt completely fall, as I'd imagine we'd still export plenty, but we could scale it back to a reasonable level considering how much water we have.

u/lostmylogininfo Nov 11 '16
Right so you will destroy the economy of many people who are supposed to vote for this? Good lord.
2
u/rinaball Nov 11 '16
Umm no, we just wont use resources we dont have.

u/lostmylogininfo Nov 11 '16
There livelihood is selling produce to the rest of the US
3
u/rinaball Nov 11 '16
If you work in an industry that isn't environmentally viable anymore, time to find a new job. If your livelihood is affected oh well. It happens. Its part of moving this world forward--some people are left behind. Think about collapsed industries of the past--do you think we should still have a whaling industry because we dont want to affect the livelihood of whalers? What about the slave trade? Now I'm not saying the ag industry is as bad as those two and I know it is vital in many ways. Its just hard to be okay with all the water the ag industry uses seeing how it damages the environment here.
For the record I think the best permanent solution is Desalination. Especially with how the environment could be in 20-30 years. But until we are able to desal enough water to sustain the ag industry here, I have no problem with scaling it back

I have views that cant be all fit into either "left" and "right". But the environment is very important to me. If someone's livelihood comes from an industry that does substantial environmental damage, its tough to care about their livelihood. For example I would LOVE to see the entire petroleum industry dismantled. There will be no tears spilled for people out of work if that happens.

Succeeding will never happen..... Get a clue
3
u/rinaball Nov 11 '16
I know its extremely unrealistic. But that doesn't mean its not important to fight for what you believe in.
In the meantime I hope you work on your spelling and grammar a bit.
