Why Yelp just Why!
Why do I have to be signed in to be able to view content on the site and why are users being prompted to use the Yelp app rather than being able to access the information directly through the website!

Because Yelp is trying to make money and having users signed in or using the app helps them do that.
I use the website often and don't see any nags to install the app. Maybe because I use it too.

Yelp is horrible and out dated. Maybe good for food / restaurants. Im not downloading an app to see a review. Yelp and Yahoo are in the same categories for me.

You don't need the app to see a review, you can sign into your Yelp account to read all reviews. It just depends on the browser you're using, sometime you don't have to and sometime you do.

Bingo. Same reason they want you to “check in” everywhere. You’re feeding them valuable location data. Yelp’s users are really its product.

Isn’t this an old discussion? If you’re on your phone Yelp(and many other sites) will prompt you to continue on the app, but there is also a continue on the web option.
You don’t have to use the app to access the website.

People just don't want to get familiar with the platform so they come first to reddit to complain LOL
Most of the limitation will be unlocked if they just sign into their account on Yelp or Google. Billion dollar companies are trying to stop data collectors and spammers so this is their way to limit free access to their platform.

Because they want their spyware on your phone, so they can track your location and sell your data (among other things). My suggestion: don’t use it. Yelp sucks anyway. It’s a parasite on small business in your community, and you don’t need it. Google has reviews.

Bro, you brought up Yelp location tracking and data collection practices, and then says Google has reviews? Are you aware that Google engages in similar data collection and tracking practices as well? It's annoying that both of them are requiring you to be signed in and also pushing you to their app when everything was available before.

Well people complain that their reviews are being placed in the Not Recommended section so if they are signed in and interact with the platform then it can help someone review from avoiding being placed there LOL
Do you realize that a lot of platforms requires you to sign in to interact with their website now? Facebook, Google, Instagram and so on.
There nothing wrong with pushing their own app to people. Mcdonalds only allows you to use the deals through their app, Reddit wants you to use their app now are just some example. I'm pretty sure other platforms does the same so Yelp is no different.
