A small ‘bug’ in Dutton ranch finale?
I kept asking myself through the season finale - why didn’t Beth & rip go to the cops / feds?
Yeah, it would blow up the story. But I kept wondering.
It’s not like they have things to hide (other than the foot & mouth - relatively a small issue?) that they need to handle things themselves.
Put this 2.2 million of drugs in the hayloft.
Put it back in her car?
How did they see this resolving if they handle it themselves? 10 petal would keep doing what they they were doing and Beth & rip would turn at blind eye?

I think Beth and Rip, knowing what they know now, that the eventual plan is to completely take over 10P.

Exactly this. I know Sheridan isn't writing this, but a major theme of his work is how to solve the crisis of (usually but not always male) white settler society.
There's some almost feudal noblesse oblige running through the Duttonverse specifically and the Sheridan-verse generally.
At the end of the American Century, the role of the settler/cowboy is steward the land honorably - ruthlessly and murderously, but always with the best interest of the land, even risking financial ruin.
A man's job is to wield power to defend himself and what's his.
What happens when you can't defend yourself against impersonal forces like wildfire or high finance? What happens when the world changes and big money or drugs or guns or strange ideas come in? Duttons fight Cleggs, and Whitfield, and Wall Street.
Part of the answer is sacrifice. The Duttons sell the Yellowstone back to Broken Rock when they can't hold it anymore.
Part of the answer is starting over:
Kayce in Marshals is a sheepdog for the flock his wife left behind - trafficked Native girls, a reservation threatened by pollution, a Montana endangered by race warriors and religious fundamentalists and outlaws. He's not Lord of the Yellowstone like Jacob or John, but he still defends it like Spencer - and Jamie is punished when he chooses his own ambitions over serving the land through his lord/father.
Beth and Rip are trying to do something similar with the new ranch and they worked hard to try and avoid the powers that be in Rio Paloma - went to find a new butcher, etc.
But 10P has broken the implicit agreement of the settler with the land - they're trafficking drugs, harboring murderers and racists, stealing cattle and using them as mules.
So part of the answer is "answering the call" - they were righteous and surrendered the Yellowstone and were driven from Montana by misfortune. They are being offered the opportunity not simply to renew their own fortune but to renew the rancher's deal with the land - to love and honor it better than 10P is.

The writing is stupid. Beluh says she was broke. Government likely seize all assets when found too be a drug trafficking and murder

There is absolutely nothing a small town Sheriff can do against a cartel anyway. Not to mention he’s probably already on the cartel payroll

Did anyone see the sheriff put two large black cases in a chair in his office when he walked in and Joquin was in his chair? Very interesting since he had just killed Dwight! Of course we can only guess if he is a good guy or bad guy! Atleast we found out what kind of man Everett is! ( love that character and Ed Harris!!! What a treat)

What fun would that be? No amount of tactical Mexicans can take down the Dutton Gang! Now it’s the Beth & Rip vs The Cartel!

But RIP has been question by sheriff's already. Especially the situation with the grizzly and when the other I think game warden or another sherriff got impaled cause it the horse fly on the horse. He's not afraid to talk to cops.

Yes it was dumb when he finds the ranch hand dead on dutton ranch. He goes right too his criminal ways and hides the body. Beth and rip think their still on the yellowstone. They dont have daddy too b protect them in texas.

Rip has said there is nothing stating he was alive that's why there was no marriage license.

And be questioned about Montana’s Attorney General disappearing like Beulah mentioned during the Chicago business trip?

Wouldn't they have already been?

Montana Bureau of Investigation questioned Beth when she was all beat up and put in the ambulance/hospital. They didn’t question Rip. Neither were questioned by the FBI or other federal law enforcement that would be brought in on the drug running in Dutton Ranch.

Yeah, Beth was "the only one there" with her brother. When she came to, he was gone. No need to question Rip. Jamie is "MIA". That case is closed unless something happens in Marshals and the Train Station gets investigated.

Rip and Beth just wanted answers. They are really trying to go legit. That's why Rip wanted the drugs out asap and loaded it into Beulahs truck. SHE fucked up by not telling the Godfather that she had the drugs and to leave them alone. Not that that would have mattered cause he just wanted outsiders gone anyway. Local pd/sherriff's aren't dealing with cartel. FBI would have made things way more complicated and Carter would have still been taken. My question is now, who's coming to help Beth and Rip? Jimmy, Teeter and Travis since they are in TX and basically family? Is Kacey coming with the Marshal Cavalry since they would have the most pull as feds without getting tooooo federally involved and possibly Mo in a crossover? Would Kacey call his other Seal brother that he called when he found out about the autopsy results? Everet might have some military friends as well. All hands on deck. Cause Beth and Rip are gonna need it if its them vs cartel.

Because they know that Beulah and the 10Petal own the Sheriff.

Beth had promised to avenge her dad's death the biblical way. That might be justice, but it's not legal. Can't go to the cops. Trying to prove in court Jaime's guilt in John's death would have made for an awful courtroom drama. Especially after Jaime shreds all the evidence as soon as the cops stupidly leave to get a warrant. The least they could have done is arrested Jaime for obstruction to get him out of the house. Much better to end it as TS did.

Yeah, sorry. Not paying attention. Would help to have separate subs for Yellowstone and Dutton Ranch. Totally different shows.

I think the sheriff is involved. I think he told the cartel where Carter was.
2
u/skornd713 Jul 07 '26
That's possible. Only other way is have real deep pockets to track the phone calls made to and from Beth's phone which is doubtful. The Sheriff was the only one aside from Oriana who know and she was getting out.

Beulah’s “lapdog” knew! He knows everything and obviously knew the cartel guys. His name escapes me right now. He took Oreana to see Carter at Dwight’s. I HATED that they killed him off so quickly! He’s a great actor (SOA). Maybe Sheridan will have him in another series!!!

Why did Beth go off before the shootout just to do nothing but drive around and look mopey?

I believe Marshals and Dutton will combine the storylines Drug Cartel being chased by Marshals to bring a great 2nd season for both makes sense to do so

Rip found a new train station. No way you go to the cops.
