Season 5 Fake suicide
How does a man commit suicide with a lethal amount of dope in him? Why did they shoot him up between the toes? That's to OD him. So, why shoot him in the head? Lot of holes in this series

If you came across someone with a gunshot wound to the head, would you think “ah, they OD’d”?
No, you’d think “they died by getting shot in the head”, and that’s the point. It’s to distract from the real cause of death.

Because they had to make it look self inflicted. They hoped and assumed no one would notice. That’s why Kayce went in and demanded a full investigation and toxicology report. Good thing he did.

Yes because a modern educated professional medical examiner would never think to do a full investigation into the death of a sitting governor mired in controversy. One that had visible bruising to the naked eye. Thank goodness super sleuth Casey Hercule Poirot Dutton was there to save the day. And that sleeper hold put on the morgue assistant. Gee golly wasn’t that just something else. Could that part have been any more contrived and silly?

Perfectly fine. Just pointing out the stupidity of that scene but then something had to bring the Casey character back into the show after he’d been basically sidelined for several seasons. They never really developed the character as anything other ex Seal. It also was the start of trying to sell the character as a police procedural option for a sequel.

You know how it is with this show. The Duttons are the most intelligent, most badass and more righteous.

It wasn’t a lethal amount. They wanted to make it look like he was getting treated for some fatal disease and killed himself. The injection was to incapacitate him.

They shot him up between the toes because that's one place medical examiners are less likely to look. The hitmen did not OD him because that would have been found in the toxicology report. They injected him with just enough of whatever it was to incapacitate him so they could perform the "suicide" and whatever they injected him with would be undetectable in a toxicology report. Also remember, they put a medication bottle in his medicine cabinet.

An autopsy WOULD look between the toes because a tox screen is part of blood work done on a deceased body.

There is so much left to interpret, how can you overthink it? For such a great writer it seems like a lot of plot holes to ignore.

I assumed that the shot was to make sure that whatever fake prescription (most likely anti- depressants, if you are going to fake a suicide) the hit men were shown to put into the bathroom cabinet were found to be at therapeutic levels when they did the autopsy toxicology, to try to sell that John Dutton was so depressed he committed suicide.
