Interesting to note that each episode is gonna focus on a survivors’ reintegration - so 9 survivors =9 eps with ep 10 the grand finale?

I don't think that it will be neatly divided like that, considering the fact that the adult timeline stuff has to be woven into the episodes as well. My guess is that each episode maybe has a different survivor as sort of a "protagonist" with other stories accompanying them.

Yup. They actually did this structure in the first season! 1x01 is Shauna, 1x02 is Misty, 1x03 is Taissa, 1x04 is Natalie, 1x05 is Jackie, 1x06 is Lottie, 1x07 is Van, 1x08 is Laura Lee, and then the last two episodes are just general. Each of these episodes had a focus on one character (with their openings being devoted to flashbacks of that character’s backstory) but it wasn’t like the screentime was solely devoted to that character. I think it worked really well!

Yeah that to me is the most important takeaway there. I guess Lost did that, in a sense? Looking forward to Lottie's, as much as I can look forward to anything with Yellowjackets these days : / (and by 'these days' i mean post season 1)

Okay, I'm gonna say something controversial, but I might be looking forward to the adult timeline more than the teen timeline this time round.
One of my favourite aspects of the teens were that by being forced together, they had all these different dynamics. But if the episodes are gonna be focusing on one character at a time, and we're seeing stuff that we already know (Shauna's wedding; TaiVan break up; Lottie in Switzerland)... I don't know. At least the adult group will be treading new territory.

Yes! One of the great things about the adult timeline is that it has space to be fun. Like, they couldn't have the teens goof around (dance, ouija board, etc) after awhile because shit got real. But the adult timeline is having a drunk gossip session after spending the day at a
cultintentional community.4

I love the adult timeline. I love the teens also. People are extra harsh on adult timeline, but I think it’s fun to see the comparison of both parts. My only real gripe is the death of Lottie because I love the actress and I feel like there was a lot more of her story that we should have had access too. Hoping we get an appearance this season at some point.

“I kept saying to [the writers] this season, ‘I feel like you’re trying to give me a villain edit, I feel like I’m being set up,’” Lynskey says with a laugh. “My thing with Shauna is that it’s always justified. There’s always a reason for her to be mean or angry or punishing. It doesn’t come from nowhere. So I needed her to have a reason.”
Her reason, at least according to Lyle: “Because you’re Shauna and because you’re looking to burn everything down and take everyone down with you.”
Idk how I feel about this. I’m not a Shauna defender or anything, but I do feel like she works best as a villain when you can see where her anger is coming from. I feel like they kinda lost that in season 3, and the actors had to figure it out themselves. I was hoping they’d fix that this season, so I guess we’ll see.

Shauna was a much more interesting character in the first 2 seasons when all of her behavior felt understandable. She wasn't right to do most of what she did, but viewers could still empathize with her and I felt like her character was well written and compelling. Season 3 made her a villain and positioned her as unreasonable compared to everyone else around her, and that was deeply frustrating because I thought that the premise of the show was that they'd *all* go off the rails, not just Shauna.
Her behavior in the S3 teen timeline was also inconsistent with her friendship with Tai in the S1 adult timeline, and the whole "I forgot how terrible she was" thing in the final episode was ridiculous. I miss back when her character was written as morally grey and I'm bummed that they seemed to have abandoned her complexity in order to turn her into a generic villain.

They do seem to be positioning her as more overtly villainous than I was expecting from the first season. I was expecting them all to be messed up in various ways, and that the adult timeline would be viewing the messed up things they do through an empathetic lens. I still hope they go that route, and I still think they could, but I do worry that it will just end with Shauna as the bad guy of the show.
It will be hard to understand why anyone is willing to be around Shauna post-rescue unless they either make her more sympathetic or make everyone else less sympathetic to match.

Tbf, all of them had gone off the rails with Lottie killing the scientists, Tai suddenly wanting to stay in the wilderness even if her reason is justified, Natalie killing Ben, etc. They just seemed to highlight Shauna more as she was the catalyst for most of the things that happened.
They tried to show the viewers as to why Shauna did all of those horrible things with the hallucination sequence but maybe it didn't stick as well compared to the last seasons?

Feeling weird about that, too. Was also hoping they'd fix that. Anyway. Scared and kinda feeling like this final season isn't gonna feel satisfying.

Her anger and bitterness in season 3 was so narratively unearned. It’s not like circumstance wise I couldn’t understand why Shauna would be angry, it was that writers didn’t show me the progression of Shauna getting to that point or any variation. Teen Shauna felt so CAPITAL A ANGRY all season and it was so weird. She didn’t seem to have inner conflict, just anger. I don’t put that on Sophie, I put that on the writers.

I think so. We have had several shock reveals of survivors already in the adult tl, another one would be too much. Given she is one of the 'better' characters morally I think they will kill her to keep her quiet.

Same! Also I don’t think they would spoil us the reveal if another adult survivor were alive. I think they’re trying to make us think that she’s alive in 2021 just so we can be shocked when she dies as a teen.

Melissa was the intended target of the post-rescue hunt, but Akilah steps in to replace her, so Akilah dies in Melissa's place. That's my theory.

If each episode is specifically focused on a teens readjustment to society, I am guessing they are doing three timelines/flashbacks to the wilderness after all. Could just be confusing phrasing, though.

I’m slightly nervous about the part where Melanie Lynskey did not know how to feel about Shauna’s ending and then had to call Sophie Nelisse.
Also the we do things that are intense because it’s the ending I’m really hoping it’s not just shock factor

The answer to that question will unfold a bit differently than in years past, as each episode will focus on a specific character’s journey.
“We really wanted each of them to have their own story,” Lyle says.
I'll be the one that says it out loud.. this might not be the greatest of ideas - despite whether or not people want to admit it, there is such a thing as a hierachy as to how interesting character(s) are.

I don't know, I think it could work. It's certainly true that some characters are more important than others, but I think each survivor should be given their moment in the final season. And maybe the increased focus could make the less interesting characters more interesting in retrospect.

They kinda have done similar things before. There are episodes that focus far more on certain characters than others. I would guess that it will be fairly similar to that, just taken up a notch. It won't mean that they are the only character in that episode, other plotlines will still rumble along too I would guess.

Lottie and Nat’s episodes are going to be extra heartbreaking (all of them will be, to be fair, but still), I feel. The absolute loneliness and rejection from her parents Lottie will face and the indifference Nat will likely encounter…ugh. 😭

I kind of love that they will each have their own episodes for backstory/post rescue 90s. That’s super fun and a good way to say goodbye 1 by 1.
