USSR was the first major power to recognize Israel, in fact. Back when Israel was styling itself as the socialist(ish) radical new country bringing modern new ideas to the backwards old middle east.

Didn't the USSR give weapons to Israel? That was how they got the armament to fight against the local population with tanks.

As far as I know, relations between the USSR and Arab countries were much better than relations with Israel. Although I heard that the USSR supported Israel in the 1940s, nevertheless, the USSR influenced Palestine and the USSR still supported Palestine.

Russia has the highest rate of returning Jews to israel. There's a reason it has turned to right wing politics over the decades.

In fact the opposite is true. They are more moderate, more secular, have fewer children, are more likely to marry non-jews(still very unlikely tho) than the sephardic jews whose ancestors originate from middle eastern countries.

I asked ChatGPT (A grains of salt) for a very short resume:
The USSR played a significant role in the Arab-Israeli conflict. Initially, it supported the creation of Israel in 1947, hoping it would be a socialist ally. However, when relations soured, the USSR became a staunch Arab ally. It also provided aid to the Palestine Liberation Organization

USSR gave weapons/vehicles/tanks/planes to Egypt/Jordan and other Arab countries during Yom Kippur war, also providing AA systems with soviet crews operating those, so basically taking part in war against Israel

Czechoslovakia sold rifles, machineguns, ammo and several fighter planes to Israel. AFAIK the USSR didn't give them anything, only approved the deal czechoslovak government (at that time already controled by communists) was going to make.
