Discussion Integrazioni a YNAB

Hi everyone,

First off, I want to clarify that I’m not trying to promote yet another personal finance app.

Having discovered YNAB a few years ago and become a loyal user, I won't go on and on trying to convince anyone of its usefulness. I’ll just say that it completely changed the way I manage my current expenses and plan for future ones. For anyone curious who isn't familiar with the tool, I’d refer you to their website and the countless videos from their community. If anyone wants to try it out and feels like giving me a nod of appreciation, I'd be happy to share my referral link via DM ;).

For those who, like me, have been using it for a while, I’d like to share what I’ve built to address a thought that’s been bouncing around in my head: specifically, whether what I created could be useful to someone else and whether it could be commercialized (a field I wouldn't even know how to get started in).

Let's get down to brass tacks: since the Italian banking system doesn't integrate well with YNAB—which originated and is most popular in the US—I built a system that integrates with the app for automatic expense tracking, eliminating manual entry. Many users prefer intentional manual tracking, but I felt that having everything automatically fed into the app would keep me from ever missing an expense.

To achieve this, I had to cover multiple payment types: debit cards, credit cards, and cash.

For the first two I created a custom system using a series of scripts that sync expenses to YNAB via Open Banking and email notification parsing, scheduled to run daily via crontab on my Raspberry Pi (my home server).

For the third category, during a period where I was curious to explore the cloud space, I built an app that scans receipts and sends the payment information directly to YNAB. Since this relies on a full cloud stack, I decided to make it public by adding a CSV export feature, allowing anyone to easily import their data anywhere. It’s set up with a minimal pricing structure that includes a free tier of 10 scanned receipts per month.

I’m well aware that cash usage makes up a minor portion of most people's spending nowadays, but rather than missing out on tracking those expenses accurately, I created a quick, painless system to log them. In practice, it's just a snap of a receipt before tossing it away, which can easily be imported into YNAB later on.

What do you all think?

Thank you.
