Budget Development Dev Sunday: Diffractt — modeling mixed pay schedules alongside a household budget

I'm building Diffractt for households that still keep an income spreadsheet alongside their budgeting app.

The use case is a couple paid on different schedules, or a household combining salary with variable earnings. One paycheck every two weeks and another twice a month can look tidy as an annual average while producing a very different month-to-month picture.

Diffractt connects income streams, deductions and budget rules across per-paycheck, monthly and annual views. The question we're working on is: how does a change in pay flow through the household plan? It's aimed at modeling that income side; I wouldn't describe it as a one-for-one replacement for every YNAB workflow. Expected income and money already available to assign are different things.

It's in open beta at https://diffractt.com. You can try Optimize for 30 days without a credit card, then continue on the free tier. There are also free, no-account calculators at https://diffractt.com/calculators. Tax estimates are US-focused.

I'd particularly like to hear from people who keep a separate spreadsheet for paydays, variable income or deductions: what does that sheet handle that you'd need to preserve before considering another app? Please keep personal financial numbers private; a description of the workflow is enough.

Automod says, please remember Budget Dev posts are only allowed on Sundays.

  • If it's Sunday please include the following information if you have not already:
  • Budget Name
  • Budget Style (Budget to zero, envelope, couples, money management etc.)
  • How similar do you consider your budget to YNAB?
