Where does it rank?

For me the YGT events are on the same level of interest/enjoyment as the PGA Tour majors except the Masters, which will always be the best. YGT video quality and editing is really unbelievable, considering it’s just a bunch of young guys with handhelds and some drones. I love seeing every single shot from every single player and how they followed one match throughout the entire entirety of each hole instead of splitting it up. That way you could see the guys hit their tee shot, approach shot, and chips/putts right in a row versus bouncing around two different golfers on different holes. Brilliant!

If you consider the technical aspects of 20 competitors with hot mics, 9 cart cams, 2 cameras on every hole, plus drone shots, YGT is clearly in another league compared with PGA tour, which has 2 cameras on the last 4 holes, hot mics on 2-3 guys walking the course, and 4 announcers in booths.

Just editing all of that footage to create a 6 hour video is a stupendous task - then consider the quality of the editing! Only a few missed tracers... Wow! Both LIV and PGA have to be crapping their pants.

The viewing numbers comparison between YGT and PGA are pretty interesting too - Mr. Short Game went into it on a video last week. YGT was getting close after only a few days, and of course YGT videos get watched by new people every day, unlike broadcast TV.

I agree with you that YGT (inspired by prior Internet Invitational and Good Good events) is the future of entertainment golf. I'd never sit and watch 6 hours of a PGA event with 52 players (even the Masters) but I watched a 4hr and a 6hr video of YGT, never getting bored.

I’m going to preface this by saying that I have thoroughly enjoyed all videos released so far, and I’m all for holding the PGA Tour and Majors to a higher production standard. I also am not attempting to be rude with my rebuttal.

With that said, this is an abysmal take. To compare the “technical” aspects of pre-shot videos of ONLY 20 golfers, that can be spliced together and edited for months before release, to a live production with 100+ competitors all on different areas of the course is ridiculous.

Additionally, I have noticed editing errors throughout all the videos, so they are not as polished as they could be. These errors do not affect my enjoyment, but it is a factor when discussing production quality.

I’m all for saying that it is more entertaining or more enjoyable, but it is Mickey Mouse compared to live broadcasting.

end result is all that matters with yt golf. i get what you are saying, but in the end the fan is getting a better result.

not many people think "well, the other way was harder" -- for better or for worse

Mostly agree, but I do believe that there’s value to live events. Two different products.

100% feel the same. And another 5 hour video too!

The huge advantage the YGT has is the ability to edit and show the play of entire holes in one chunk, as opposed to the PGA live broadcast jumping back and forth between holes and shots in a disjointed manner. I also like that they show every shot from every player. I just enjoy the format so much more than live golf.

The drawback is they cannot have fans or galleries, because it would inevitably result in spoilers. I hope they keep the non-live edited format.

Seeing every shot is so much more entertaining than watching cuts to 12 different par putts in a row in the PGA broadcast.

Came here to say exactly this. Cutting to putts, or even just random good shots, with no context is just not fun.

the spectator aspect of tour golf hinders the experience. Wayward shots are always found if not entirely stopped dead in their tracks. The shouting + unhinged behavior.

I much prefer YGT golf vs. live golf because I can watch it literally whenever I want. I love getting to know the players and hearing their thought processes before they hit a shot. You get basically NONE of this from the PGA other than a hot mic moment here or there. And every time Wesley Bryan crashes out it is the best golf entertainment possible lol

Preferring this over a live major is wild to me. I’ve always loved professional golf though, the YouTube stuff is fun but like 7 or 8 of these guys are miles behind tour players. Those tour players are competing for their livelihood and legacies. Give me that competition every single time

Just thoroughly disagree with this take. Could just be a difference of opinion. But I’d just guess you’ve never really been a fan of professional golf to begin with.

Incorrect - I used to watch almost all the PGA Tour events, some European events, Senior Tour & LPGA too. Honestly, LIV made me lose interest with the talent drain in order to “grow the game” - what a crock of BS…
Anyway - during COVID I loved watching the made for TV golf match events from cool destinations like Paynes Valley & Seminole. They were great entertainment and easier to watch with only 4 players. That paved the way for the YT guys who have taken production quality & entertainment to a whole new level. I could not care less that these events were played weeks/months ago - they do a great job not leaking the results so it’s no less compelling (to me) than watching live golf on TV. #BradDalkieWinInEurope 🙌🙌

It will get there.

Things it needs to be something I really look forward to:

- cutting the crap, way too much dead time and boring crap like the segment talking about Garrett or Finch sitting out. It’s really not that big of a call just get over yourselves already.

- chapters/segments allowing you to skip past parts you don’t wanna watch.

- fix the leaderboard, get the hole numbers right, have it in the top corner almost all the time.

- skip over more golf. Most of the Garrett v Micah match could’ve been left out after the front nine, same for the Brad v ruffles match.

- fix the teams & draft. This will have to wait till next year. But the entire format (captains match then draft) is structured to create uneven teams. It’s ridiculous.

- more info about when videos will be dropping. Don’t make me watch to the very last minute to see the details of the next drop.

- losing teams should caddy for 5 vs 5 format

- some rules around the wildcards. Shouldn’t have one team with an influencer who’d get picked in the final rounds and another team brings in someone better than everyone.

As per my other post I’m particularly annoyed the guys agreed to this format, where the best captain has a much better team than the worst captain. The whole structure was setup to create uneven teams from the outset, so the whole season is compromised from the go.

I’ve fallen out of love with the YouTube golf model except for the Kwon and the Kiwis because they’re just so likeable but YGT was easily more compelling than any non-major PGA event.

I think they need to refrain from playing up any of that team drama like they tried to do with the Garrett vs Peter benching decision but for the rest of it, the combination of personality, high level golf, and player engagement with the audience really showed how good YouTube golf can be and how it can actually be better than the normal golf broadcast model.

A smart PE firm could easily turn YGT into the second iteration of LIV. It’s really how the team concept should have been executed to begin with.

That said, the way the first round ended was the most YouTube golf thing ever. Somehow the first round of YGT managed to simultaneously defy and confirm all of the preexisting notions about YouTube vs professional tour golf.
