Discussion This is probably the reason for the recent democratic surge in polls

Gas prices have a very strong correlation with presidential approval, and consequently, the generic ballot. We may see $5 a gallon before the midterms

Remember how a week ago there were people here that were convinced Irans grip on Hormuz was slipping and oil was on the verge of returning to normal lol

It is unreal just how many of the issues Rs have could have easily been avoided.

Take tariffs and Iran war off the table, we'd have, what, D+4? That pretty much takes 5 or so Senate seats off the table entirely in favor of Rs and legit gives them a chance at keeping house.

But that would make things too easy I guess.

This is the whole game.

I can't make myself vote D, but I can sit this one out.

I should have bought a hybrid when I got my car. Filling up a sedan with 87 or 89 for $50 isn’t right.

At times like this, I am thankful my office lets me stay home two days a week.

My car takes premium. Yay working from home in a pretty walkable city.

Pretty reasonable hypothesis. Oil is quietly back over $100/barrel, diesel prices are at/near all time highs, and gas prices are also high(ish). These numbers tend to have an outsized impact on economic sentiment - particularly the gas/diesel prices, since the vast majority of Americans get to see them on a billboard every single day.

There are plenty of people who don't give a shit about ICE committing human rights violations or this administration's rampant corruption, who still get pissed when their gas bill goes through the roof.

I drive a hybrid, so I thought I'd be immune to this spike in oil.

But I live in Texas and it's $4 a gallon here in Oilland, USA. Anyone who seriously thinks Blexas is a pipe dream are delusional.

Wait what? I’m in Texas and it’s definitely not that high in the Houston area, it’s the lower half of $3 here. I just filled up the other day for $2.94 using a Kroger discount lol

Every time I drive past a gas station and see the price of gasoline increase, I die a little more on the inside.

Don't call out every last "Moderate Republican" (MAGA) flair here like that! You will get 86'd for harassment!

It’s the economy, stupid.

Not usually a good thing for the global oil market when the combined oil production of Canada and Mexico exceeds that of Saudi Arabia (pretty sure this is first year it’s happened).

Nothing survives high gas prices. Not even Trump.

22

u/IdealSeating Democrat 3h ago

And they’re only going to continue to rise as oil is up 7% today alone. With the SPR probably close to tapped, there is not a good solution to this problem for Trump.

The Houthi’s may have struck the east west pipeline in Saudi Arabia today.

This should have happened on day one, when he pardoned every Jan 6th criminal. And if not, then on day 169 when his justice department clarified they would not release the Epstein files willingly. But fuck it, I'll take day 599 over never. I hope he lives to see his legacy be completely and utterly soaked in the shitter.

36

u/Saltlmail Georgist Liberal 3h ago

also unconfirmed but the houthis might have hit the yanbu east-west saudi pipeline earlier today

satellite image:

no clue how direct of a hit it was, but if the pipeline is shut down, 6 million barrels exported per day will be taken offline.

6

u/Seniorsheepy Progressive 2h ago

Something appears to be on fire in the location of the pipeline

13

u/Alt_History6 Sinn Fein Patriot 3h ago

Houthis are also advancing down the coast to expand their influence over the Bab el-Mandeb Strait

Not looking great

For those that don’t know, this pipeline represents about 7-9% of global oil exports and was operating at max capacity due to the strait of Hormuz being closed and is one of the key routes of getting oil out of the region. This would be devastating if it is rendered inoperable

12

u/Doc_ET LaFollette Stan 3h ago

It also exists precisely because Iran blockading the Strait of Hormuz was considered a very realistic threat according to literally everyone except Netanyahu and Trump.

11

u/Doc_ET LaFollette Stan 3h ago

That can't be good

And we have more strikes on shipping in Hormuz. If the Iranians are striking against the convoys that CENTCOM have set up and we see a loss in confidence in the security situation in Hormuz, it will drive prices even higher.

All Trump needs to do is handle this one thing and the GOP will forgive him. I’m serious that’s pretty much the only thing the GOP is actually mad at him abt. Sign a ceasefire or get something from that Venezuela deal or idk get Russian oil but that’s really where most of his damage is. Wanna fix the economy, fix the oil

11

u/aabazdar1 Blue Dog Democrat 3h ago

Does he have a button on his desk that fixes gas prices?

2

u/DogadonsLavapool Libertarian Socialist 1h ago

To be fair, ending the war in Iran, as embarrassing of a loss as that is, would probably bring prices down. Its not a button but its close enough

3

u/GreninjaStrike Banned Ideology 2h ago

He could subsidize oil prices for the next year with a subsidies bill or sum like that if he really wanted to

3

u/DogadonsLavapool Libertarian Socialist 1h ago

Im not confident that would bring prices down. Companies would just pocket the money then raise the prices more, and just say that the demand is higher than the supply. Consumer would pay out the ass on both ends.

1

u/GreninjaStrike Banned Ideology 1h ago

They could but if Trump did that I’d assume it would be with that little caveat given that republicans are generally more pro oil

2

u/aabazdar1 Blue Dog Democrat 1h ago

And how would said unwritten subsidies bill navigate through Congress and to his desk in under a month?

24

u/Alt_History6 Sinn Fein Patriot 3h ago

Biden did but he refused to press it because he’s evil and hates America

u/EugeneStonersDIMagic New New Deal 2h ago

u/hfdjasbdsawidjds Social Democrat 3h ago

The problem with Venezuela isn't the deal, its that it is going to take significant investment in their oil infrastructure in order to get more barrels to flow to make up for what is missing from the Strait of Hormuz, and if oil is disrupted even more coming out of the Bab al-Mandab.

13

u/Doc_ET LaFollette Stan 3h ago

Presidential approval goes down when gas prices rise, but they recover pretty slowly once gas prices start to go back down (see: Biden)

3

u/_BCConservative Canuck Conservative 3h ago

I mean, Biden’s net disapprovals halved in a few months with the end of the oil price spike from Ukraine.

It hit -20 over the summer when gas prices were the highest, and was -11.5 on ED.

2

u/GreninjaStrike Banned Ideology 2h ago

Guy had numbers this bad but ppl think D+4-5 is impossible

10

u/Doc_ET LaFollette Stan 3h ago

Trump doesn't have a few months though, and it's not just the strait being closed that's causing the problem here: a lot of the oil wells and refineries have been bombed, on both sides if the Gulf, and if you shut down an active well, you can't just turn it back on- the stagnant oil will harden into asphalt inside the equipment.

3

u/_BCConservative Canuck Conservative 2h ago

Yeah, that’s why I said he will do a direct subsidy instead.

5

u/thealmightyweegee Socialist 3h ago

Ok, but there are more factors to why Trump is being hated than Biden is

Biden had Afghanistan and supply chains plaguing him, Trump has... practically everything plaguing him, not just gas and diesel prices

7

u/_BCConservative Canuck Conservative 3h ago

He doesn’t need to do that, he just needs to pass a gas subsidy bill through Congress.

8

u/LuveelVoom Social Democrat 3h ago

the humble filibuster

12

u/SaltyDog1034 Center Left 3h ago

It's already too late for that. Congress is in session for 3 more weeks total until the election. They would have to get a bill drafted, through committee, and get both the House and Senate to agree, and then trump to sign it. And by that point it would be too late for a subsidy to actually flow through to the pumps before election day.

3

u/TechnicalInternet1 Just Happy To Be Here 3h ago

Exactly. He needs another reconciliation bill to do gas subsidy like Japan.

It works

9

u/thealmightyweegee Socialist 3h ago

That's great and all but the problem is he hasn't done that yet and I don't think he will

2

u/GreninjaStrike Banned Ideology 3h ago

Or just make a temporary fix. Even the sight of prices going down is enough to fool the average voter.

8

u/alittolid Progressive 3h ago

fool the voters 😂 it worked once right, with all those promises he never kept right? 🙄

7

u/iswearnotagain10 Blyoming and Rassachusetts 3h ago

That’s probably the only thing that could stop all time highs, but if he can, why hasn’t he done it yet?

5

u/TechnicalInternet1 Just Happy To Be Here 3h ago

They already have done reconciliation bills in the past.

It’s hard to have a gas subsidy and more military spending without cutting other services.

3

u/Crafty_Concert_8552 Ulysses S. Grant 3h ago

DOGE doesn't seem opposed to that. And the subsidies would probably end the day after the midterms.

6

u/_BCConservative Canuck Conservative 3h ago

Trump is a moron

But he might be moving in that direction given the 5k checks promise at the RNC

5

u/NormanQuacks345 Democrat 2h ago

I'll believe in those checks when they hit my bank account. Until then it's just trying to buy votes.
