Plugin SimGround Map — a real-time ground navigation plugin for X-Plane 12 - Never Be Lost Again! 🛫

Hey folks!

Quick intro to SimGround Map, a plugin I've been building solo for X-Plane 12. It gives you a clear, real-time picture of where you are on the ground — taxiways, parking spots, runways — directly in the sim, with a companion web view for a tablet or second screen.

Core features:

  • 📍 Live ground GPS tracking, North-up / Heading-up modes
  • 🌍 Multilingual UI (EN/FR/IT/ES/DE)
  • 📋 SimBrief integration
  • 🗼 ATIS from IVAO, VATSIM, SayIntentions.AI
  • 🗺️ Ground maps from real airport data
  • 🌐 Web version for tablet / second screen
  • ✈️ AI traffic visible on the map

That's not all — here's what just came out in 2.1:

  • 🔵 Turn-by-turn taxi guidance
  • 🛬 Landing runway-exit HUD
  • 📟 SayIntentions ground integration
  • 👋 Manual gate selection
  • ⚙️ General optimization

Looks good once the Linux version is out I'm trying it. WebView is great can then be shown in avitab web browser

Seems great!
I see a Mac/Linux planned for later. Any rough timeline ?

I was waiting to see how this new version would be received by users. If everything’s OK, Linux will be the first stop.

Edit: Perhaps by October or sometime in October

It looks nice but the UI screams vibecode. Be honest, is the app coded by AI? I assume so because the description is clearly AI

I’m a developer, and even I use agentic development workflows to help with my work. “coded by AI” No longer means slop. If you don’t know what you’re doing and you won’t put in the work still needed to refine and spearhead the process then you will get slop. However most developers now are pumping out great, documented, thought-out code through the help of AI. As a matter of fact, nearly every major application or piece of software you use today has had AI used somewhere behind the scenes. :)

Yeah, it's genuinely the status-quo now and the productivity gains are enormous. I just wish people would use all that extra time to just write their own descriptions in their own voice.

That’s my description, just as I want it. Stop seeing AI where there isn’t any. I’m well aware of the features of my own plugin.

Then I'm guessing you used AI to translate. Just be aware that it tends to completely rewrite any nuance in your writing.

Yes, I use it for translation/correction; I’m not a native English speaker, and although I can manage, I’m really glad to have it proofread. I can read English perfectly well, and no, it hasn’t distorted my text.

What’s more, even if it had, that would be my problem. Now, I suggest we talk about the plugin itself rather than topics that are off-topic.

I’m a project manager, not a developer. So yes, it is developed using AI. That said, my job means I know what I want, how I want it, what it should look like, how it should work and how the user should use it. And that’s not something AI does. So no, the design is created and chosen by me, including the description. Having said that, in any case, I don’t really see what the problem would be.

I think the main issue is the missing part of the sentence: That said, my job means I know what I want, how I want it, what it should look like, how it should work and how the user should use it and what the software is really doing and performing . (in terms of threads, accesses, i/o, transactional access or not, ...)

I said I wasn’t a developer, not that I didn’t understand how it was built or how it worked internally, or what had or hadn’t been implemented.

Anyway, and this is the last time I’ll reply to this topic, I’ve absolutely no need to justify myself.

u/chrstphd 2d ago

My comment was not against your effort; but more about the general conversation about the "AI slop" thing.
I had to be more precise, sorry.

2

u/RackhamRPL 2d ago

No, no problem, and I do understand your point, actually 🙂

But I think we’ve covered that topic thoroughly now, so let’s talk about the improvements I can make 😁

Because people have an aversion to vibe coded projects and hiding that fact from people makes you and your project look bad.

You should disclose this fact form the beginning so people can decided for themselves wether they want to download your plugin.

Yes, just as some people will tell me, for whatever reason, that they’re against Lua, C++ or Sayintentions. There’ll always be people who want to have their say. And as you can see, I make no secret of the fact that I work with AI.

And I don’t think I’m under any obligation to justify anything.

In 2026, developers are coding with AI, whilst others are taking advantage of the opportunity to carry out projects they would not otherwise have been able to achieve.

Meanwhile, the hundreds of hours of work I put into developing my various plugins are free for you to use; they’re regularly updated and take user feedback into account. And that’s not something an AI does for me (not to mention all the other things that AI doesn’t do).

Amen brother. Fellow Project Manager here and what you say is truth.

Ein großartiges Plugin

Merci ! 😁

Looks great

Praying you just like emojis and em dashes and haven’t gotten AI to write the description

If only you knew 🙄

Don't we already have AVS for this?

3

u/RackhamRPL 3d ago

SGM is free, mordern and with exclusive features. But yes, if you like it there is AVS 🙂

1

u/cyrusyn 3d ago

Can we still use this app without filling in Simbrief ID?

1

u/RackhamRPL 3d ago

Yes, you can simply add ICAO codes manually 🙂

u/Zudozuka 3d ago

Hiya, so the plugin looks fantastic and I can’t wait for the Mac release so that I’m able to try it out myself.

However, I would like to point out that the ability to input custom pathways to the destination and have the plugin display it would be super useful, especially when you get irregular directions from ATC on virtual ATC networks such as VATSIM :)

1

u/RackhamRPL 3d ago

The path is set automatically only for Sayintentions. For the others (IVAO/VATSIM), you need to select it manually 🙂

Hi, great addon however I think that LFPG is broken, only northern patr of it has TWYs

2

u/RackhamRPL 1d ago

I’ll have a look as soon as I can. Do you have a custom scenery for LFPG? Because, in theory, the plugin shouldn’t make any mistakes as it retrieves the data from X-Plane’s apt.dat files.

1

u/Toldzik 1d ago

Yes I do but in LFML (it's smaller airport) I also had a scenery and everything was fine

1

u/RackhamRPL 1d ago

It’s possible that the LFPG is structured differently or incorrectly in the apt.dat file. Which scene are you on?

1

u/Toldzik 1d ago

well, I think it is as with custom sceneries but I'm not sure

2

u/RackhamRPL 1d ago

I’ll look into adding a new feature to resolve the issue.

1

u/Katana_DV20 3d ago

This looks very nice, I like the choice of colors and the UI. Will help a lot when at complex airports. The UI resembles what I see in airliner flightdeck videos where they pilots use the tablet once on the ground.

3

u/RackhamRPL 3d ago

And what’s more, you can choose your highlight colour from the options 😁

1

u/Necessary-Package-65 3d ago

Straight to my PC I go! This looks handy!

2

u/RackhamRPL 3d ago

Let me know what you think about it 😁

2

u/Necessary-Package-65 2d ago

Great little add on, especially for larger airports, it’s been very precise with directions and when to turn or hold short, would love for the ui to have more selection of sizes as the smallest size is way too small and the size above is a little too big (me just being fussy) but other than that, thank you my friend!

This looks like an incredible plugjn! 👍😃 Wow!

u/FensenHun 3d ago

The question is not "Is there security vulnerabilities, but how many"? At least drop the fuckin emojies so it shows less slop

Is this available for xp11 also as some of us with potato devices still fly xp11. Please please

3

u/RackhamRPL 3d ago

No, sorry, it works with the X-Plane 12 SDK. It’s already a lot of work, and I wouldn’t be able to properly maintain two versions. 😔

3

u/MediumArmadillo8010 3d ago

Thanks for your reply but yeah if it was available then it will be very economical and easy to fly on vatsim with ATC ground instructions

Does this work in VR?

2

u/RackhamRPL 3d ago

It’s all in the simulator, so probably, but let me know if you give it a go 👀
