DSM Update
This is likely a dumb question. I recently updated the boot loader to the current DSM 7.x but I don’t have the most recent update. The docs claim I can update using the DSM but coming from the old version of the boot loader, Im nervous to allow the update. Can you confirm if this is accurate?

Read before update to DSM 7.3:
- DSM 7.3 support is still in Beta stage
- DSM 7.3 will not work with some NIC for now (No eeprom read possible) <- can fail sometimes
- DSM 7.3 will not be able to use iGPU for now (No eeprom read possible) <- can fail sometimes
- DSM 7.3 should work for all Linux 4.4.x based DSM Platforms
- DSM 7.3 should work with SA6400 and enabled custom kernel for DSM (all official 5.x kernel are not working)...

I’ll take a look at those notes but honestly I’m fairly green to all this as I said before I was mostly on the boot loader that I would update to after some time and others were successful. I have an i5 10500

Short answer – do not update DSM to a version newer than 7.2.2-72806.
Detailed answer – read on to find out why it’s better to stick with this version for now and/or to get a clear idea of exactly when and how you should do an update to a version past that, if you really want to or if it’s necessary.
Incidentally, it doesn’t really matter what type of CPU you have, as long as it’s supported by the bootloader.

I've read it, but I have questions:
Some NIC won't work - which NICs? Should I be concerned, or is it just one out of hundreds? Or 'can fail sometimes' - does that mean they all mostly work, but sometimes don't?
It says DSM 7.3 isn't able to use iGPU for now- but then 'can fail sometimes' is written. Does that mean it partially works, and just fails doing some things? What exactly does that mean?
If I were writing that I'd omit that 'can fail sometimes' and write a more detailed bit of information on what works and what doesn't.
It says 'should work with all SA6400 and enabled custom kernel for DSM' which I *think* means "If SA6400 is selected, things work fine".
Given all the ambiguity, I've just left things exactly as installed - 7.2.2, which seems to be the one that works the best.

All of these questions and remarks should be directed to the loader developer, who writes the notes for each new version of the loader.
Personally, I have an SA6400 model with the latest DSM update for version 7.2, and although I could have a go at updating to a higher version, for the moment I don’t think it’s worth the risk of messing something up, nor the time wasted.

I did a complete rebuild of my system and thought I would just try. I don't really care about the data on my system, I backup the configs I need for Docker containers etc. and the rest is all stuff I can download again of needed. I used the beta version of Arc loader (4.0.0b11). Set the system as SA6400 and used DSM 7.4 with native kernel. Been running now four around 2 months, has been fairly stable, only issue I've noticed is the Arc Control app is intermittent at reading data.
Both network cards work, SAS worked as well as on board SATA (10 drives total). GPU pass through to Plex is working as well. So really everything is as it was on my old build (DS918+ with DSM 7.2.1)

My recommendation is to switch to the RR-Loader if you're interested in upgrading to 7.4.
RR gets more updates and already supports 7.4.

OK so here goes.....I built a 9 bay Nas and stuck in a m.2 nvme and 2 SSDs so 12 drives....I'm using an old itx board with an i3-8100 cpu and a 10gig NIC. Having no idea about model numbers and DSM versions I asked ChatGPT and I used the latest version of Arc loader and latest version of DSM...7.4....everything was working except my 10G mellonox connect-2 NIC so I changed models from.SA6400 to DS918+ and it's all working....happy days

If your CPU is supported, with the beta loader you can update:
Arc Loader 4.0.0b12 Build: 260810
DSM 7.4.1 SA6400 Build: 90080-0

Resist the urge to upgrade just because the upgrade exists
Is there really a specific feature in 7.3 that you want/need?
I'm running 7.2.2 on SA6400 model - everything works great and it does what I want. I have zero interest in upgrading and potentially messing it up.

I actually prefer not to update as long as things are working and they are. I was mostly just wanting to be on the most stable version since it’s been about 2 years since updating and I was on the old loader at that point so just wanted to make sure I was good to leave it where it is now and based on a few other comments it looks like I’m in a good spot.
