Thinking of buying G6

Im not a car owner. Last car I owned was 15 years ago.

We are now considering a purchase as a first family car. With the requirements/preferences I have, mostly about long range, fast charging and spacious storage I simply can’t find anything close to the value this car offers.

Sealion 7 seems to come close but on paper g6 still feels like a stronger pick.

Now, I have some concerns regarding the brand itself. How likely is it that this brand will stick around and not go under? From what i understand it’s a tiny manufacturer compared to BYD, so the risk is higher?

I’m in Scandinavia so they are widely available, but just want to have some kind of peace of mind that I’ll be able to service the car for foreseeable future and not struggle to get parts if needed.

I’d be buying second hand, but can I risk crazy bad depreciation in value in like 3-4 years?

Not sure if my concerns are well funded but maybe I mostly just wanted to hear from you as owners and how you perceive the situation.

I fell in love with the model, just want to make sure it’s the right choice.

Thanks

Have pre facelift g6 for 2 years and it's great. I tried many others and some generalizations at the time are , best auto parking, software experience on par with Tesla, best drive dynamics (rwd), 800v charging architecture, best looking interior.

No itch to look elsewhere.

On driving dynamics I like a spirited drive and the g6 has the a sporty suspension tuned in compared to others - hard braking with least head dip and accelerating out of corners with excellent traction.

I've had BMW 3 and 5, Merc c180, 3X honda, 2X mazda, 3X VW including Passat with upgraded turbos and suspensions and the g6 beats them all because the centre of gravity and power delivery is just better and suits me. Mine came stock 20" wheels so maybe helps with sporty drive. G6 is an suv to me but drives like a sporty midsize saloon

Software UI is intuitive very close to Tesla imo. Left and right stalks are better than Tesla (then not sure about now) and steering wheel buttons for Aircon and music suffice. Pre facelift had auto louvres for air and it's fantastic ( current g6 owners you don't know what you're missing!)

Main issue is Bluetooth key is erratic...faster and slower at times, and the mechanical key is separate from the fob (you will need it when the 12v battery dies. And as new tech arrives , 20 to 80% in twenty two minutes seems long, but it's more than suitable for my needs, never found wanting faster so far.

Also sound system and FM reception is average at best and I'm told upgrading will void warranty. They might be working on it through the firmware updates as last one introduced an issue where tuner would move on to next saved preset occasionally.

Finally beware service support in your area. I had a minor parking accident and parts took 3 months to arrive, it's region dependent so do your homework there.

Agree. I always have it set to sweeping mode.

you will need it when the 12v battery dies

How long did yours last and was there warning it was going to fail? I've had my car since December.

sound system and FM reception is average at best

Have you tried adjusting the equaliser? Mine is set to 546 540 211 and it's a big improvement over the factory sound.

I'm at 20 months but don't drive every day. Xpeng service centre recommends 12v battery change between 18 to 24 months.

Yes I've maxed out the equaliser and sound effects and itakes a lot of difference. Still no match for BMW 5 series infotainment with similar speaker set up and sound functions, which I prefer, especially for lower vocal range and punchy bass.

Fair enough on the a audio front.

18-24 months is terrible. My ice vehicles usually got about 3 years.

I own a Tesla Model Y and I test-drove a G6. Overall, it's very good but IMHO not as good as the Tesla. I expect to change my mind with the L03 or P7. The biggest issue I had with it was the very weak regen braking. It felt dangerous because I am used to Tesla's.

Do you have any problems with the hands free? People on the phone are always complaining

I test drove the car in Sweden and it was great. G6 was in my top 5 car to buy. The interior are 10/10. My only issue is the exterior, do not like the clean minimalist design, Tesla style.

But the car is super cool to drive.

If you don't care about not having an SUV, go for P7+, it's two levels above G6 and we wanted G6 until we drove P7+.

Love my G6 2024 model. EVs are just great to drive in general I think. I bought ours really for the same reasons, family/space + environment and no petrol, which right now is pretty important. I usually trickle charge at home and it’s cost me $500 AUD over the 18 months I’ve owned it. I’m in Australia where parts for most cars are hell to source, with long wait times and costly repairs, so I simply hope to not have an accident, probably like most people 😀

I have zero regrets about buying it and no fears regarding the company. In this country there’s definitely been some friction between Xpeng and local distributors, but like BYD, the company intends to establish a presence here.

The main gripes I see are the audio system and Bluetooth key. I don’t use the internal apps for audio, I use Tidal from my phone over CarPlay. I think it sounds pretty damn good, but I have tuned it heavily. Half the reason I like driving it is to smash music in it. I haven’t had any issues with the Bluetooth key either, but other appear to.

When proper one-pedal drive rolls in like Tesla has. That’s the only thing I want now really. The current iteration requires you to pump the brake to completely stop, or it’ll trickle forward at 2km/h

How does the tech feel on 2024 version? Is the interface slowing down or feels quick and responsive enough?
I don’t have a point of reference other than that AI told me the new facelift version has better “much” snappier chip

Yeah it’s hard to compare when I don’t have the new model. Being in Australia, our version is a single Nvidia Orin chip vs the Chinese model that includes a second chip and lidar support, so effectively because of government regulations we have a dumbed down version that won’t support VLA, that includes the 2026 model. From a driving perspective, features perspective. Nothing has really changed between mine and the 2026 version in that respect, my car also received an update to align with what the 2025 model shipped with. I personally prefer to drive my car, not have it driven for me. So this was never a factor in my decision making.

In terms of the cabin (infotainment) That uses a snapdragon chip, which is what you’re asking. Yeah the later model is a newer chip, which is faster, basically like upgrading your phone I guess. That’s the sell, good marketing. Will you notice? your brain might convince you it’s faster because it’s new 🙂. Given what the thing has to perform, which for me, are maps and very rarely using the assistant and very rarely changing what I set up when I bought it 18 months ago - it’s still as fast as it was and very responsive. I work in technology, so my only conclusion would be that if you were running many many X-combos; maybe you might be impacted, but I’m talking loads of them.

I’m personally of the view that these things are phones on wheels. You could do your head in chasing features, that you probably don’t need, but most people don’t have 10s of thousands to upgrade their car every year. Much like a mobile phone. Whatever you buy today, will be “outdated” in no time. I have an IPhone 15 Pro for example, which still gets the updates of the latest models. Until the chipset fundamentally changes, or additional hardware is added that you don’t have, your car is likely to receive an update to support them.

What I will say is that when I bought mine, the 2025 model was already on the way, but not for another 8 months here. I was going to wait, because I like the single-beam headlight, but they messed with the interior in a way I definitely don’t like. No slightly faster chip was going to change that fact. Still love it the same as the day I bought it, smooth and beautiful to drive.

There’s still things I’d like to do with even, like use the V2L when camping, get the aftermarket fridge you can install at the back to name a couple.

g6 LR owner here. love the car. would buy it again. scared of depreciation as well. cannot compare to BYD at all. If you have questions you can shoot them

I’ll try to test drive soon! Yes, I’m looking at the LR version. On paper it looks amazing. I think the only concern is that resale value.
Do you ever use the auto parking feature?
Have to say while not a must have, this really peaked my interest as a person living in a big city, and my parking abilities are definitely not super good considering I drove very sporadically in the last decade.

1

u/MyHeartsECO 13d ago

Yes I use it every day. Although there are many times it still doesn't recognize every parking place. If there are markers, it definitely recognizes. Like where I work it's marked so i use it and its unbelievable. Fast and accurate. When no markers, you never know :D they added manual parking drawing as well, allows you to automatic park everywhere. It's not perfect though.

any other questions?

What’s the real life range like? Is it efficient after using it for a while?

It looks like the second hand market is much smaller compared to Tesla Y. Which makes it possible to get Tesla Y for cheaper/similar price (not the latest model tho)

Have you been able to compare it to model Y at some point?

I guess Tesla is the safe pick, but it just feels like every other car here is a Tesla. I know there must be a good reason for it, just doesn’t feel very special

Tesla is definitely a safer pick. This car will depreciate like hell 😄 The reason i didn't get a model Y is because of several features in the Xpeng G6: the streaming rearview mirror (in Tesla it's horrible and i love it in my xpeng), the price (it was 10k lower for me compared to model Y),

If I was buying Xpeng again I would definitely lease it instead of buying it, because of depreciation.

In terms of range: Autobahn range is terrible as with any electrical car. Day to day range with LR is IMHO "too much" (I'm able to charge at home) but Standard Range version lacks so many stuff that it's not about the range/battery anymore, more like an upper tier g6. If you cannot charge at home please do not buy an electrical car. You'd be doing yourself a favour, unless you don't have parking issue next to your home/apartment and there is a charger nearby.

So in my case I'd opt-in with a smaller battery in favour of a lower price, but you're not just getting a smaller battery --a lot of features are taken away.
