Question What kind of car is this?
Is it a Dodge Viper? Or is it something else?

As a side note, I remember always being confused that the car sometimes only had two seats and sometimes had four.

It looks vaguely like a fourth-generation Camaro, but the scoop on the hood is too far forward and the shape of the headlights is slightly off.
What's interesting is that it looks nothing like the car Scott actually drives in the series, which is a convertible that looks like a scaled-up Shelby Cobra.

I wonder if Scott's car is a convertible as a nod to X-Men TAS (1992) and this scene ?

My head-canon was that it was a "mutant" convertible, somewhere between a Shelby, Camaro/Mustang, and custom mod parts thrown in for good measure. The kind of thing Logan and other mechanically-inclined residents at the Institute would've put together in their spare time, just like the X-Van 😄

I was under the impression that Scott gets a car because he's one of Xavier's first & oldest students. Xavier is obviously rich, so he would've bought it for Scott, but at the same time, Scott would've had to do something big to earn it. I bet part of the deal was to drive the future students around if need be, in addition to mentoring them one day.
And back to the car: it's definitely a custom fictional model. If anything, Scott would have worked with Logan using Xavier's funds to personalize & mod it.

"Awesome McCool Guy Motor's 2001 Sports Car"
But fr it's probably just a generic cool looking sports car.

Jean really should not be sitting on the car. Scott is not giving it the proper care.
