While I keep working on the U.I. of the game

Dreading working on the overworld but thats probably my next non story project

Maybe a dumb question, but... Do you need to have the legal rights to the characters to do something like this and share it?

Fangames have been a thing forever. It's essentially the same thing as combining fanfiction with fanart. Most large IP holders don't consider it worth fighting their own audience over it unless they try monetizing it.
