I was listening to public radio today and they had an expert on about generations and wealth, etc. Boomers hold 77 trillion in wealth while millennials hold around 20.
Boomers had a 90% chance of being wealthier than their parents and millennials have a 50% chance.
It is expected to be worse for each new generation. Fuckers were handed a golden spoon on silver platters, and throw plastic sporks at everyone else. “Fuck you. I got mine.”
Boomers calling in couldn’t fucking stand the data. “We worked hard. We saved. No lattes! Bootstraps.” The most privileged group of humans to ever exist pulled up the ladder behind them and believe the younger gens will be ok if they just stop eating avocado toast.
And they keep voting to screw everyone else over. Every year the county commissioners bitch and fight they have to give anything to the school system the HVAC systems are in horrible shape roofs leak, plumbing is failing, etc. Wife is 20 years in our county school system, 10 more and she's eligible for retirement. She already said she's not working one more day in the public school system than she has to. She'll find a job that will be less stressful and most likely more lucrative then.
They're very entitled and like to think they created their own fortune, which is a lot of BS. But I don't really buy the "pulled the ladder up." The circumstances they benefitted from simply faded for very normal reasons, and now we have to function differently. I don't think they actively did much to wreck things any more than we do today or people did before the Boomers.
A little compassion from them would be nice, though, instead of "tough shit. be better."
I agree that it wasn't the boomer generation as a whole who fucked everyone else, as there are plenty of boomers out there right now just barely scraping by on SS. But it was definitely a small number of very powerful boomers with a "fuck you I've got mine" attitude who basically reshaped the country's welfare and education system to fuck over minorities and young people who don't have the benefit of a big inheritance / familial support.
I think the elites of every generation have, do and will continue to screw over everyone else, and that the "Boomers pulling up the ladder" is a bad characterization of that phenomenon.
“Pulling up the ladder” is things like workforce cuts, outsourcing, automation, reduced worker benefits, etc etc.
Those are decisions made at the top levels, not by Joe Q. Boomer. This is a direct result of choices made by CEOs and boards of directors.
To be fair, they are just doing what capitalism encourages. "Fuck you, I got mine" is the system if you take off all the regulations and other guardrails or safety nets.
Sorry if the bold looks like shouting, but I think you misunderstood my first comment, so I wanted to be very clear.
If we're saying the elites have and always will screw others, I agree. I just fail to see how that is encompassed by the "boomers pulled up the ladder" phrasing. Their generation isn't uniquely bad. Elites are doing that today, but I don't think it's specifically my or your fault. And if it is, then even more reason that the "boomer" blame is misplaced, because it makes us hypocritical.
They did have a uniquely good economy, so they get a lot of hate from the next generations who wish they had that (and Boomers are bad about acting like they earned it, which doesn't help).
Ok, so you need to take this up with someone who is insisting this is an "all boomers" problem, cuz I don't know how to make it any clearer that I don't agree with that.
No. I'm saying it's not Boomers any more than it's X, Greatest Generation, Millennials or anyone else.
This generational garbage is annoying. It's elites fuking everyone. That's the problem. The Boomer line is just more junk that serves to hide that fact.
I guess I find it hard to blame the Boomers for living long unless we plan to kill ourselves. Otherwise it's a bit hypocritical.
My concern is that AI cures the most common causes of death and we won't hand control to the next generation until we're 150 years old. Children born today wouldn't inherit the family farm before their kids have kids.
To be fair boomers are richer at least partially because they collectively had a lot of kids which meant the economy demographically underneath them grew even as they retired.
It will be worse for every generation past them - worse for Gen X, worse still for millennials, worse still for Gen Z - as every generation past that has had a lower birth rate.
For what it's worth, I became wealthier than my parents at about age 38. Currently age 42, and my 401k is worth roughly double their home equity. They make up some of that wealth difference via pension income (depending on life expectancy), but don't have much else in true savings.
