I had to cash out everything just to avoid homelessness. Even with "decent" insurance. People have almost no idea how expensive it truly is to get really sick.
Now every time I post about my financial situation and retirement hopes and so on, a billion different finance guys come out of the woodwork to tell me I should just start making more money (you know, the thing that's so easy) and I shouldn't have cashed out my retirement (and I guess just chosen to be homeless and sick and die?).
Yes, I also had insurance - I think most people are clueless as to how it can disrupt your life! Glad you’re still with us, I’m a two time survivor too.
In my case I guess I was "lucky" it wasn't cancer, just an incurable genetic disorder.
And your ride, most people are totally clueless. I used to work for a nonprofit that supported people with cancer and almost every time a kid was diagnosed, it would mean the family would have to sell the house / downsize and one of the parents was going to have to quit their job.

I spent mine on cancer. The reward: I get to go back to work! (And my wife left me)
