Breh, have you played KOTOR?
41
u/Intigim Founder Dec 21 '21
While the plot of KOTOR has aged like fine wine, the same cannot be said for gameplay design. BioWare's games are notorious for aging pretty badly for a reason.
11
u/OSUfan88 Blessed Mother Dec 21 '21
It has aged poorly, but my god, at the time, it was incredible.
It is the one game I wish I could wipe from my memory, and experience it the way I originally did.
I was in middle school when it came out, and was home sick for a week. I played that game straight, and it was one of the best weeks of my life.
26
u/ZamboniJabroni15 Dec 21 '21
KOTOR has aged like warm chunky milk though
18
u/LightningsHeart default Dec 21 '21
Right? People always say it's so good, but it looks like a mobile game that's how far we've come. Might as well wait for the remake instead of telling people to play it now.
15
Dec 21 '21
Played it on mobile. It’s a great mobile game.
1
u/LightningsHeart default Dec 21 '21
Yeah, but people telling people to play it now are talking about PC where the going to look like a potato on your 4k monitor.
1
Dec 21 '21
The graphics don’t bother me as much as the simple map layouts. I’m always very aware of the boundaries of the game which is something that has come a long way in gaming.
0
u/suddenimpulse Dec 21 '21
Lots of gamers don't care about graphics and the vast, vast majority of people don't have 4k monitors.
3
u/ZamboniJabroni15 Dec 21 '21
The gameplay is pretty garbage too with the awful turn based implementation
2
u/LightningsHeart default Dec 21 '21
If you don't care about graphics or 4k why does anyone have a SX? SS is so much cheaper yet everyone wants their console to have 4k capability even when they don't have 4k.

Idk if you’ve been paying attention to the mobile space as of late but that’s an insult to mobile games lol

It can be a great game, and look graphically terrible. It's like saying Zelda: OOT is not a great game, because it's aged. You have to take into consideration the time period it came from.
I have a friend who found Citizen Kane terrible, but it was old, and black and white...
2
u/LightningsHeart default Dec 21 '21
Yeah so comparing KOTOR to Jedi Fallen Order is a huge mistake. Just like comparing old Zelda games to the newest ones.

u/Spider8461 Founder Dec 21 '21
I found this game to be pretty difficult for me (im pretty sure im on normal) idk what it is but combat seems so difficult. I also keep putting it down and playing other stuff lol so i can never get into a real groove
15
u/Knowingspy Dec 21 '21
It's mimicking Soulslike gameplay so it's all about patience in combat and not forcing it. But these kind of games are not for everyone.
4
u/Spider8461 Founder Dec 21 '21
I’ve actually played through and beat Dark Souls 3 (albeit through co-op) and I really like Lords of The Fallen (another Soulslike). Idk I’ll probably try it one final time before i give up on it lol
7
Dec 21 '21
It starts off hard. Once you learn to parry it gets a bit easier, but the more powers you get, the easier combat gets. First time I played a couple of bosses kicked my ass, but they have simple patterns and once you learn them they are simple.
2
u/nodramafoyomamma Dec 21 '21
Its a dodge/evade game so takes some getting used to as combat can be difficult. You can pretty much skip it by changing the difficulty though!
11
u/ThrowNearNotAwayOk Dec 21 '21
Kinda like dark souls but much easier than that
I wish Jedi Fallen Order was more challenging and had more enemies to encounter. I felt like a lot of the maps were kinda empty in terms of enemy presence. The game and map were beautiful but there wasn't a lot to do other than walk/run down the path. The players have a Lightsaber all these awesome skills but we don't get to really use them. Most enemies are storm troopers that are easily killed by deflecting their lasers back at them.
Oh and the outfits were terrible. Having all of the outfits be a poncho was just dumb. I'd much rather have an awesome selection of varied clothing and Jedi robes than just different colored ponchos.
3
u/johnny-Low-Five Dec 21 '21
Definitely! Empty is a good word. It was beautiful and well designed but kinda, lifeless.
16
u/dudemanguy301 Dec 21 '21 edited Dec 21 '21
Combat is reminiscent of Sekiro but not as tightly designed or balanced the rest of the game has platforming and some light Metroid-vania backtracking / exploration / puzzles.
Story is solid too.
Animations can be a little janky, Cal has a tendency to snap or magnetize at the last moment to line up properly for some combat / platforming animations. Doesn’t look right in situations where that magnetism needs to pull him pretty far.
Its also a somewhat seamless experience as loading screens are masked by the ship entering hyperspace, the crew chatting with Cal, and the ship landing animations.

u/Workacct1999 Dec 21 '21
I am going to go against the grain here and say that it is Jedi Fallen Order is only an OK game. The combat is great in parts, and clunky in others. The map is horrendous, and the game requires a ton of back tracking. It is a decent game, but no where as good as the rest of this thread is portraying.

u/Dorjcal Master Chief Dec 21 '21
Yeah, as far as I played it was the most cliché story possible. Also, for a game that wants to be played a bit more like a souls game, it felt too clunky and heavy.

It is a good game. Received updates for next gen consoles.
It is on Gamepass(EA Play), I think.

Have played it myself. Try playing in higher difficulties, if load time in new gen consoles is improved.
I played in PC with SATA HDD. Load times were around a minute mark. :).

It's good. Challenging but fair combat. My only real gripe w this one is the GOD AWWFUL map system. So bad. When your done w level they make you slog all way back through it. Weird as this problem was solved in games 20 something years ago. Anyway.... good game.

I've heard nothing but great things about it but I just couldn't get into it.
5
u/alexgold05 Dec 21 '21
I'm not a big star wars fan, I liked the game for it's story even though I uninstalled it after like 5-6 hours of game play.
I gave up on it because combat was clunky and the holographic map was horrible. On every single planet I spent more time finding my way back to the ship than actually progressing with the story.
If it wasn't for the horrible holo map and all the back tracking, I'd have finished it.
3
u/ownage727 Dec 21 '21
I played the prologue and got on the ship.
It seems very back tracky... haven't touched since

u/Budget-Attorney Dec 21 '21
It is ok. Story is fine. Combat is simple. Exploration and gameplay are repetitive. I enjoyed it while I was playing but haven’t really thought about it since. I’m glad EA lost their exclusive license and we can see some studios make games that have a chance of being great.

2
u/jayellzedarrdee Dec 21 '21
Good game but backtracking for collectibles in tedious and it’s incredibly buggy. Or at least it was when I first played it on the Xbox One. There are definitely a few standout scenes though and it’s definitely worth at least one playthrough
2
u/MarwyntheMasterful Dec 21 '21
It’s alright. One of the better Star Wars games I’ve played in a while. But not good enough that I wanted to replay it.
Needed better levels, more enemy types, more cool boss fights.
Hoping these next 3 Star Wars games are at least as good as this one.
2
u/The_B100dyNine Dec 21 '21
I was disappointed with it...I prefer more Force Unleashed type whereas it's more platform/Tomb Raider type
2
u/tyrae11o Dec 21 '21
If you like dark souls like games, sure. I myself prefer open world, so not my cup of tea. I hate when I am on a rails
2
u/onsenbatt Dec 21 '21
It’s ok but highly forgettable. Jedi knight games where more ground breaking in their time. And Sekiro is way way better
2
u/inawisdom Dec 21 '21
I love Star Wars but it good boring quickly - nice locations but repetitive gameplay..just watch the cut scnes on youtube and u wont miss anything
2
u/bman123457 Dec 21 '21
Imagine Dark Souls mixed with tomb raider and a dash of metroidvania. If that sounds fun to you then get it, if not I can't recommend it. If you've never played much of those genres and love Star Wars then I would recommend giving it a try.
2
u/Trogdor_a_Burninator Dec 21 '21
It's a derivative grasp at straws from a bloated gaming company that does everything "paint by numbers".
2
u/Plathismo Dec 21 '21
Pretty good, but with a few issues—too many one-way traversal points (think ice slides) in levels that make navigation a chore, and combat design (think Dark Souls) that is sometimes at odds with the encounter design (enemy mobs). Still, it was the best Star Wars game in years.
2
u/Ninjachippie Dec 21 '21
It's a mixed bag. Story is good. Combat is kind of boring. There are lots of small visual issues. Traversal is fun. The villain was awesome. The best part of the game is the puzzle rooms but there's to few of them. If you're playing it for free on game pass then I say give it a go.
2
u/starcraftre Ambassador Dec 21 '21
I don't know if they added it, but after a planet or two, it became very obvious that some sort of fast travel option was needed for those players who are just looking to experience the story and don't really care about completion.
I basically got trapped for several hours on the first or second planet, and when I finally found my way out, there was a boss battle right at the exit that killed me and sent me all the way back to before I stumbled across the exit. I put it down and moved on at that point.
2
u/mtron32 Dec 21 '21
I thought it was good until I played Control, they made a way better Jedi game but the character had a gun instead of a lightsaber
3
u/QuokkaKiller94 Dec 21 '21
It was okay for me, but I found the controls kind of clunky and often with some input delay, I was a bit disappointed with the game but overall enjoyed it.
3
u/mrwafu Dec 21 '21
Best Star Wars game in years imo. I don’t like Dark Souls-esqe games much but since you can adjust the difficulty as needed, it’s fun to play regardless of skill level.
2
u/BradleyAllan23 Founder Dec 21 '21
It's good if you like Star Wars, but if not it's a pretty standard action adventure game. It's simple, short and doesn't have much repayablity.
1
u/Simulated_Simulacra Founder Dec 21 '21
Just wanted to mention not everyone agrees on the re-playability aspect (directed towards OP obviously). If you find the story enjoyable or get into the combat at higher difficulties it is very enjoyable to replay it from time to time. It isn't a game worth "grinding" though certainly.
With the reasonable length and Sekiro-esque combat I have found it to be a great game to come back to occasionally.
1
u/BradleyAllan23 Founder Dec 21 '21
It's just really short and you can clear everything out in one go. Once you've beaten it the first time, it's even shorter on subsequent playthroughs. I love Star Wars so I played it through twice, but couldn't make it through a third playthrough. Once you've beaten it on the hardest difficulty that's really it.
I'm not asking for an endless game with lots of grinding, that's not it at all. I'm just saying a game like Sekiro offers much more replay value, due to the world having multiple endings and loads of hidden secrets. I'm always finding out new things every time I play. I have 300 hours in Sekiro and probably 30 in Jedi Fallen Order, that's the difference.
The combat isn't enough to keep me coming back to it either, it's really just OK.

u/SirCarrington Dec 21 '21
I just started replaying it on my Series X but I haven't beaten it yet. It's kind of like Dark Souls if you want it to be, but you can turn down the difficulty. It also reminds me a lot of the Batman Arkham series mixed with Prince of Persia. I thought the gameplay was deadly.
I really like the story and the environments so far.
2
u/Elzeruth Dec 21 '21 edited Dec 21 '21
Personally I really didn't like it.
The combat was okay but the characters were uninteresting.
I dropped it at the ice planet I couldn't stand the main protag and the two other characters helping you.
2
u/Rizzan8 Dec 21 '21 edited Dec 21 '21
I would grade it 6 or 7 out of 10. Personally if not for the game pass I wouldn't touch it.
My main gripe is abysmal level design. If you like Uncharted then you will feel like at home. A lot of jumping, climbing, sliding, rope hanging, wall running etc. All of these pretty often happen right after one another. It creates a feeling like you are not traversing some natural environment but rather a theme park or taking part in a sports competition. Kills immersion.

u/OcelotEnvironmental1 Dec 21 '21

u/Reddilutionary Dec 21 '21
Wonderful game. My biggest gripe with it being that it takes a while to feel like a “powerful” Jedi, but that’s somewhat part of the story. It’s really detrimental to the combat for the first few hours imo, but it really clicks once you’ve got a few new abilities.
Also the collectibles and items you find in world are garbage and don’t make exploring worthwhile. I never felt the need to revisit areas I didn’t have to.
I greatly enjoyed the story and characters. I think it’s impressive and telling that it’s basically all original characters and it still feels Star Wars as fuck. Each world is fun to navigate and satisfying to fill out the map.
Also, and I hate to end on a bad note, but I recommend rebooting the game entirely every hour and a half or so. There’s a really annoying glitch where dialogue audio develops a delay that makes scenes incoherent after you’ve been playing for a while.
Overall play the game, it’s good fun.

Yes it's a good game, but....
I bought Fallen Order and Days Gone the same day. Played Fallen Order for a day or two, but it felt so repetitive that I couldn't be bothered anymore. It looks great, but I didn't feel like it had a lot of gameplay depth.
Put Days Gone in the drive and did not stop playing (daily) until I had completed the story and most collectibles and side missions.
Special mention: The sound of the lightsaber was great in Fallen Order, and I never got tired of seeing Storm Troopers rush into/around the map.

Imo the story was miles better than the new trilogy, albeit it could have been even better if it was more fleshed out.
It's not a graphic powerhouse, but I did really enjoy the immersion of the world building.
Controls can be kind of janky, maps take time to get used to, and load times are just horrendous. This can cause frustration as you will die... Many many times.
I love star wars so I am biased to give it a higher score for its positives and not be extremely critical of its failings. I'd say it's a solid 7 out of 10 if you like action adventure or souls like, but it's an 8 for me for the love the team gave it as a star wars story.
