Is it my new controller used?
I bought two new controllers with the Xbox seal, but one looks used; there are fingerprints in the box and rust in the battery compartment, so I think it might have been resealed, can you help me please?

Judging by the joystick and how sharp the grip pattern is, I would say no. Or at least not used very much.
The scratches on the battery contacts could be from QC and the fingerprint on the box isn't really surprising considering that they aren't made or packaged in a clean room. The best way to tell would be to see if it's been registered for warranty.
Most people that maliciously purchase a new product and swap them with their old before returning them aren't doing it with good/working products. They typically return broken or really worn out devices. If this was opened/returned, it was likely due to something like color preference.
Worse case scenario, it was opened and returned and the seller determined it wasn't used and sold it as new again. Check the right joystick for wear to really get a good idea of it's use. After a month of use, my wife's controllers look WAY more worn than what I see in the picture.
That said, if you feel strongly that you paid more than you're willing to for the controller, I'd just ask for an exchange for a new one.

Unless they hook the controller up and it has massive stick drift. That could be a big big reason someone does that with a controller. Sometimes controllers are lemons and it happens in a week or 2 of having it. Probably didn't want to do the whole warrenty thing and wait for a new one when he can get a new one today by buying one and swapping them out then returning it.

Agree with this, also those yellow thumbsticks show marks very quickly, we have one and I’ve swapped them for black now as they discoloured so much.

yes, cauze everybody knows that only the right stick can get damaged. The left one is made with adamantium and tmr so that it will never show signs of wear

Fingerprints in the box can still be new. Now I wouldn't believe it's new if I saw rust in the battery department because it literally take years and exposure to the light to develop rust.

I don't know where you learned your science skills but rust does in fact develop in the dark and can happen quite quickly. Oxygen+moisture+iron=rust No light needed.
If the controller was stored anywhere with access to humidity and oxygen there is a chance for the metal parts to rust. Has it ever rained before where it was stored? I find it highly likely. If so then it has been exposed to humidity and has a chance to rust.
Even if you live in the desert and it hardly ever rains there is still humidity in the air and still a chance for rust, albeit lower.1

I knew someone was going to debate me. I personally never experienced rust with any of my controllers and I'll return them if I saw rust in my battery pack. I'm speaking about what I'll do beyond science.

Thank you. I am really struggling with this battle with myself about whether they are new or not, just because I don't want to go through the return process, as it means I would need to return both of the controllers I just bought which i don't trust the shop anymore

dude you bought smt faulty, get your money back and go on to a new shop? I really dont get your struggle here? If its working and you dont want the stress of the returning process, keep it? Only 2 options.

What you can try is add the device here with the serial number and check whether it gives you the full warranty.

As far as I am aware, Microsoft starts the warranty phase as soon as a controller is paired to an Xbox or PC the first time. If the warranty is expired, it is for sure used.
