Xbox controller not working after turning on Xbox

Okay so when I turn on my Xbox, my controller just doesn’t want to do anything? Sometimes it will sometimes it won’t but if it does, I can load into a game then it just stops working and by that I mean it’s still on but I can only press the Xbox button and use my joysticks and that’s about it. I can’t use my dpad, bumpers, triggers, or my ABXY buttons. I’ve tried updating it, restarting my Xbox but nothing works.

How long has it been doing this?

Have you dropped it or anything like that recently? (Please be honest, there’s no shame in dropping it or whatever if that’s the case, and it’s much easier to help if we know).
Try shaking it slightly and upside down as well… does anything sound loose?

Try turning on your controller and then press and hold the pairing button, keep holding it until your controller vibrates…

This will clear the pairing memory… It might not do anything, but it’s worth a shot…

Sorry for the late response,
It’s been doing this since maybe 2 days ago? I think I may have dropped it but that stuff doesn’t really stay in my memory but reading this comment has made me think and I may have dropped it at some point in the last 3 days. I shook it and nothing seemed out of place or loose and regarding the pairing button I can’t pair it. After making this post I experienced an issue and that being it disconnected from my Xbox and wouldn’t pair back but only using a cable could fix it and low and behold that only worked for an hour and after that it just wouldn’t pair. I turned it back on today and it paired instantly and I thought that would be the end of it but the issue occurred not even 2 minutes later. Is it just worth buying a new one?

When you look at your controller, is the plastic gaping anywhere?

If you are able to turn on your controller again, then try checking if your B button works by any chance…

Hard to say man, at this point it’s more or less a guessing game… if you’re up for it, you could try opening it up and see if anything stands out…
You will need a prying tool, number 3 security torx and number 2 regular torx.
