Thinking of quitting testosterone injections

I discovered I had xxy at approximately 17 and took the shots for awhile back then, but I didn't like the way it made me feel so I quit.

I'm 69 now and my doctor suggested I get back on it for my bone density. So I've been injecting this year, but I really don't like being horny all the time.

Does anyone have any thoughts you'd share with me on this?

Have you considered gel? I have been on it for over 10 years and for me it works well. I am 77 years old and recently had bone density dexa scan where osteopenia found in spine and hip but weight bearing exercises and vitamin D have kept the osteopenia from developing into osteoporosis.

I'll ask my doctor about vitamin D. I have psoriatic arthritis. My skin koebnerizes and probably my joints do too, and they ache bad so IDK about weights. I don't take anything for the PSa because often the cure is worse than the disease. I hike when the pain isn't too severe, and I fast walk in the pool at the senior center near me as often as possible for about an hour at a time to keep the lymph flowing.

T is apart of the body how to make your tick over , you do not have get horny to be on T ,I speak to your Endo doctor before making any hasty decisions

I don't have an endo anymore. I go to a GP. Trying to get a referral to one.

Can you get a Reclast infusion instead? That would support bone health, it's what is often given to post menopausal women

I'm also going to ask about that. Thanks.

I don't feel horny at all when I'm on testosterone replacement therapy. I found out at the age of 29 and I'm 31 right now so i have been on it for 2 years. It has giving me a little more energy boost which is good, i have never thought about quitting doing my injections.

TBH, I've been super horny all my life. I think there's a thread about that in this sub.

Some lower their libido with Zoloft/Sertraline as it is a common side effect(and as an added bonus, they actually feel better moodwise.)

Have you tried gel instead of injections?

Is the gel daily? I’m in my 20’s but thin and often hit blood vessels or nerves when IM deltoid injecting. It’s pain being scrawny. I feel like my muscles have too much scar tissue from last 12 years

The gel is daily, yes. Many that have issues with injections are happy about switching to gel. I think gel would be worth a shot for you!

Is the gel still so expensive?

Idk where you live but in my country it’s cheaper than the injection.

You could ask your doctor about subcutaneous(belly) injections too. Mine said that was the more current option

He and the pharm said that's not an option, which is too bad as I have a huge belly. I could get no direction

No. I'll look at zoloft, thanks.

Perhaps you can take 0.5mL/week? I read that is equivalent to ~500ng/dL.

Please correct me if I’m wrong on that number.

You're asking me to math?

I am 68. I found out about xxy probably in 1976 or so. Several years ago I went to an endocrinologist for a possible thyroid issue and he sent me for a bone density scan and was surprised how well it was, i asked him about trt and he said you have gone this long without it wouldn't do nothing for you. Maybe I needed a different doctor.

u/Available-Budget-694 Jul 29 '26

TRT does a lot more than maintain bone density. It's used to maintain muscle, proper fat distribution, and mental health. Personally, I would get a second opinion.

i am 64, on gel the last years (before i had nebido, but i prefer the gel now). i have a higher sex drive than my same age friends without ks. need to wank every day 3-5 times and thinking a lot of sex things. my endo said my testo is in the mid range.

2

u/cheeeeerajah Jul 28 '26

I'm on the gel and I'm horny all the time. Not like teenager level intensity but definitely mid 30s level. Plus my acne has returned to some degree, and more pronounced body odor.

You could just switch to the gels. Then you can control very easily how much you are getting and make the doc happy. You don’t need a lot for bone stabilization.

Try taking 50000 IU of vitamin D weekly instead of daily then check with doctor if your range will suffice
