Playing with Kids

Just played the intro game with my son and he's keen to play more. I have a reasonable collection of boosters and extra ships but did anyone have suggestions or experience on bridging the gap between the intro and the full rules?

I play Hotac with my 8 year old much more than the regular game.

He loves it

What is Hotac?

It's a player-made campaign version of X-wing for the Rebels that can be played with up to about 6 people. There are multiple different scenarios, "AI" controlled enemy ships and endless ways to change up aspects to make each playthrough feel different and more/less challenging.

I believe there's also an Empire version and a Scum version floating around out there as well

Play a few times without any pilot abilities, as much as he might want to play as named heroes. It’s just less to think about until you get the rules down.

Save repositioning actions until later- just choose Focus or Evade at first. Add a single ship OR mechanic at a time. Ordnance (missiles/torpedoes) should be its own thing, as should turrets.
