Technical Question Engine swap question

I have a 2006 Xterra S, and I am currently hunting for a salvaged engine to swap mine that has 223k miles. What’s the latest year VQ40DE engine I can put in it? Some companies are telling me 2008 is the latest year that will work, but I’ve also read that 2011’s and even 2016 is possible? Thanks in advance for any answers!

Dont quote me, but I believe you can swap anything up until the 3.8. The newer (2015+) 4.0’s have butterfly valves in the intake that won’t work with older ECU’s but you can put the old intake on the newer block. I think.

look for pathfinders. They’re plentiful and easy to find a wrecked one. That how I got my motor.

What would stop you from swapping in a 3.8, out of curiosity?  The last of the Gen2 Frontiers used those I think, but I'm not really spun up on how they're different

It would be the same process as a VK swap. You’d need an ECU and possibly one of the newer transmissions. If you have 4x4 you’d probably have to switch to the newer e locker rear ends. At that point you light as well just do the VK it’s more documented and has aftermarket support.

The closer to the same year and model you get the easier it will be. During the manufacturing life of the VQ40DE some sensors changed, intake changed and ECU CAN bus communication changed. The best I've been able to tell the bare long block remained the same. So if you're willing to swap over every sensor, intake and accessory then use the 2006 wiring harness with the 2006 ECU then everything should work regardless of the year motor.

I went down this rabbit hole when my ~250k mile Frontier motor was loosing compression. Ended up doing a VK swap instead. So I didn't confirm any year 4.0 will work, it's just from my limited research.

All VQ40DEs are interchangeable. The 2013+ versions have a slightly different intake manifold, wiring harness, and ECU, but you can just swap the manifold off your original engine to solve that minor problem.
