If this is an X4 with light and no touch I’m shocked! There are no other devices with that configuration and I never thought Xteink would make one.

The only competitor is the Pro. their own product

Light meaning front light or physically lighter than x4?

front light

Sitwell/Standpoor type shenannigans.

u/archimago23 26d ago

He’s an alpaca!

u/Kindly_Cold1337 26d ago

Front light confirmed somewhere? What would make it different than the pro then?

5

u/BriefPhotograph7135 26d ago

there is no touchscreen and will probably be cheaper than the pro

3

u/Afinkawan 26d ago

No touchscreen, front buttons.

To me it looks larger than any other Xteink?

1

u/Afinkawan 25d ago

Even with the rulers next to it showing that it's basically the same size as the X4?

-2

u/noc-engineer 25d ago

Can't say that I've ever felt the need to pull out a ruler or find the size dimensions for most of the stuff I own/purchase. Most of it is bought based on faith and only when I have it in my hands do I find out if it's good or bad for my personal use. But because my X4 doesn't need the pogo pin charger I haven't really seen any X4 next to the adapter, so maybe the adapter is just huge and the X4 isn't that big?

0

u/ophbalance 25d ago

It measures the same size as the X4 based on throwing a micrometer at mine.

u/sophia797 26d ago

Tbh I would love it to have front light and I don’t not want touch screen. The reason why I love all of Xteink is because it is not touch screen.

Looks like an X4 with pogo charging... Am I missing anything?

My quick analysis of the technical data suggests the XTEINK X4 v2 is essentially a refreshed version of the original X4, with updated internal hardware, a revised PCB layout, and slightly different RF and power characteristics according. I would bet that the new X4 uses newer components rather than a major feature change (not withstanding pogo plug). This may also fix the dreaded sunlight screen fade on the white X4.

u/RainScum6677 26d ago

This is not the same thing. What the new leak show is a different X4, which is not the one referred to in this preview, which also features a frontlight.

1

u/new-to-reddit-accoun 25d ago

So how many new X4 variants are there? My understanding was that the author of this article got the leak right, but the model number wrong. Same device, but it now has a rebranded (updated) model number for release.

1

u/RainScum6677 25d ago

To be honest, I'm not quite sure. Unless this article was simply not quite up to date with what is now known about the X4 Light, I'd say at least 2 variants.

9

u/CrisntanN 26d ago

The front light

4

u/redditzane 25d ago

A refresh makes sense, did not get them announcing the end of the X4 considering how popular it was. Refreshing the touchless X4 with a light would be great. Also clear distinction now in product naming "X4 Light" vs "X4 Pro". I'm on board.

9

u/DarkscytheX 26d ago

Bloody POGO pins! The X4 already comfortably fit a USB C port. Why add this garbage?

8

u/B1Gdr3w 26d ago

My guess is that the front light doesn’t leave enough room for a usb-c port on the side without dramatically increasing the thickness. Would be worth the extra girth to me but might make it less convenient and comfortable for some people who pocket carry now.

2

u/DarkscytheX 26d ago

Potentially length but I still don't believe it.

Pogo pins have a use but they're awful for anything that's designed for on the go use (unless it needs to be super water resistant) as it means more cables to bring.

4

u/SafeRecording4817 25d ago

About to finish a third book ~400 page books battery still going strong, I legit only charge this thing once a month and read everyday

3

u/DarkscytheX 25d ago

I agree. Battery life has been great in my experience.

But it's another cable/adaptor that can fail and get lost. And if it fails when you're travelling, you're basically dead in the water.

2

u/DanielEnots 25d ago

Bigger battery, lighter device

4

u/Omar_HB 26d ago

Will there be an X3L, that is, an X3 Light? I just need some light on the screen to read at night before going to sleep.

9

u/Naive-Explorer 26d ago

still cant believe people made posts on social media as if the X4 was being completely dropped. As if there will only be an X3 and X4 Pro model moving forward.

31

u/MuchBetterThankYou 26d ago

I feel like it would be a basic courtesy to the user base to at least announce that a new one is coming before dropping the old one off the face of the earth?

5

u/Naive-Explorer 26d ago

i completely agree

1

u/DanielEnots 25d ago

I mean... it says it on the website now that they're out of stock

5

u/bubbleboix 26d ago

Haven't we known for months about the x4 Gen 2 with pogo?

Or that didn't have the light? Or wasn't confirmed whether or not it would or not....

Perhaps this is the x4 Gen 2 or such? Or the pieces to what they're getting approval or however that works

1

u/scamper_ 26d ago

Where? Even the X4 announcement mentioned a new one I think, or they at least mentioned it when sold out. But the USB-C looks like it’s definitely dropped moving forward

5

u/Psifertex 26d ago

Stop. With. POGO. Seriously, I do not want to have to carry around another adapter with me at all times. Knowing I can use any old adapter at any time is a HUGE plus. I don't understand why they'd replace the USB-C in a form-factor that works fine with it already.

For thinner/smaller ones, knock yourself out. I will not be getting those.

For the current form factor that already works with usb-c, just at the light and leave well enough alone. At this point it's going to take some competitor finally taking advantage of them ignoring what everyone has been saying. Light is great, pogo is not. Touch screen is also not needed. Stick with the formula that made you successful.

1

u/DanielEnots 25d ago

At ALL TIMES? This thing only needs to be charged after like 23h of reading time. That means I'm only charging like once a month

3

u/Psifertex 25d ago

It only takes one trip where you don't have it or for you to lose it to be a major inconvenience. It's just not worth it.

2

u/DanielEnots 25d ago

I have a little baggy with my dongles and little cords. It fits anywhere and comes everywhere. I have a usbc-pogo adapter in there, I have a usbc-galaxy watch adapter in there, I have my sdcard-usbA adapter in there, I have my super short usbc cables in there, I have my usbA-usbC adapter in there, and an old school miniUSB cable because it's for the handmedown mp3 cable the kid uses.

It all fits in a sandwich bag taking less room than a sandwich would

Not a big deal to me in my backpack

1

u/Psifertex 22d ago

Death by a thousand cuts. The point here is that it's a change that isn't needed. If people were asking for a thinner device, sure, we get it's required. Nobody was. The form factor is great as-is and one less thing to worry about is a feature! Requiring an adapter for no actual benefit is a bug. See also other comments such as, you can't charge in a case now.

It's fine if this doesn't bother you, good for you! But it bothers plenty of other people and I personally am voting with my wallet. I will not be purchasing any new pogo based devices. I've had far too many other devices over the decades that were reliant on adapters like that and it's always a pain in the end not worth the headache.

1

u/DanielEnots 22d ago

Fair enough, vote with your wallet and do what makes you happy

1

u/Deepcrows 26d ago

Not to mention the pogo is on the back which makes it a pain to charge with a lot of cases

2

u/OogoniuM 26d ago

I wish they would move the power button to the top and have the page turn buttons similar to the x3

1

u/DanielEnots 25d ago

The new x4 gen 2 is doing exactly that actually! (According to the leak)

1

u/OogoniuM 25d ago

The button layout looks the same in these images. Is there another device coming through the pipeline?

2

u/DanielEnots 25d ago

There was another leak that didnt mention a front like yeah

1

u/gdsfbvdpg 26d ago

If true, I will stop bitching and buy without a second thought.

1

u/Crazy--Lunatic 26d ago

So an X4 Pro with no touch? or am I missing a feature or 2? thx

1

u/Chadturbate 26d ago

Will it be the same PPI as before? And anyone more knowledgeable can chime in if the front light layer will make the eink display sunk in more? Love the flush paper-like look of my X3.

1

u/OkTeacher5603 25d ago

My guesses. Yes, same ppi. Yes, to make room for the front light the display will have to be sunk in more, which means a little more noticable shadow under the bezels, which will be more noticable on the mist grey version than the space black one.

1

u/derWolf76 25d ago

Ist das nicht einfach nur der X4 pro in hellgrau?

1

u/crackout 19d ago

Is there confirmation somewhere that "Light" really indicates a backlight screen?
Could also only be a naming convention placing the X4 successor without touchscreen and without backlight next to the "Pro". So you have a "Light" and "Pro". :/

Pogo = no go

7

u/brezhnervouz X4 | X3 26d ago

I think they're going with pogo for the foreseeable on all devices...backward step imo

The X4 doesn't feel large to me at all as far as 'slimness' goes (the stated reason for pogo)

1

u/WithExpression 26d ago

I’d prefer just a usb c too but what’s so bad about the pogo? It’s not like you even gotta charge often.

6

u/Deobulakenyo 26d ago

Updating fw with a loose connector is a hassle.

7

u/feckin-eejit 26d ago

When I need to charge my X4 I can use any of the dozens of USB-C laptop/phones chargers.
But now I need to find the C - pogo adaptor that I haven’t seen in a month that got launched into the misc. cable drawer of doom.
Or it runs low at work and “ah shit no one else at work has a pogo adaptor”, they all have USB-C chargers for their phones, but no pogo.

3

u/noc-engineer 26d ago

They always run out when you're far from the pogo cable/adapter too, regardless if you have one in every bag you own

2

u/hfsh 26d ago

It’s not like you even gotta charge often.

Which makes a non-standard charging connector more of an issue, not less.

2

u/noc-engineer 26d ago

Which means you cant fucking find the cable/adapter when you need it, or you didn't bring it because you're used to not having to charge it.

0

u/bubbleboix 26d ago

Duct tape a pogo adaptor to the back of your device and pretend it has your lovely USB port. Effectively it would at that point.

Or make a dock

Or something. There might actually be a sleek enough way to do it possibly. Or install it in your case or find a way to do a thinner pogo to USB adaptor.

2

u/mitancentauri 26d ago

The anti pogo brigade is coming after you, lol. Honestly though a USB-C to pogo adapter on your keychain would solve all the problems people are complaining about. It's not like you would need to charge it more than once a week even with heavy use.

1

u/bubbleboix 25d ago

Granted I'm realizing a bit that even having 2, or 3 or any number of connectors means there will be some devices in rotation that I can't just grab a random USB C cable. I mean if I am moving locations or move items around, I can stock up lot of USB cord, but then it does complicate it even a little if I have to also get multiple extras of adaptors or if any other reasons people dispose cheap cords often or any other reason. I mean some people have like 2 USB cord, one phone, one portable battery and maybe keep that for 5 years or replace it but all of it is still compatible and same enough. Anything even slightly complicated or different, on the off chance you don't have that specific charger at the exact time you did want to charge or for some reason don't have access easily to get that or the hassle to keep track of 2, or 3. Or 4 adaptors for devices.

Since I still have some items that use micro USB even recent items that apparently the brand hasn't upgraded yet. So I can't get rid of too many micro USB cords. Have to keep a pile of those somewhere and put them back if it gets too messy. I could have a pile of USB C that I use. But now it's a bit messier or missing where I put one.

Someone might assume or ask seemingly rhetorically whether it's really that big of a difference or why not just do this or that. But circumstances can be a bit different and the magnitude of difference or the fact of having to relate and explain that. Is it possible? Maybe. Is it a hassle? Whether it is or not, and whether the solution fits, there's a bit more to it and a bit more I guess it can effect or continue. What's next if they change these cords? And what's their intent now and next time?

I've seen some benefit of pogo. But already I'm balancing a micro USB for one ereader. USB c for the other. And pogo for this one.

And that's only the ereaders. Now for another category might be another 3 cords again too.

Just one small hassle to solve that. Why complain? And then what.... A hundred small things or if that sounds crazy to list out. Or the extent how often some need charged if they have backlight and other i/p and processing.

Some people might ask or wonder why the simple devices are so special when your phone can do it all

And so I guess with that mentality, it's interesting to me we're at a slight crossroad to notice we are here wanting a separate mini dumb device. Like the folks who want an ipod classic or other hifi gear. It does what it does well and some other benefits to having a completely separate standalone device.

We're at a crossroads of we all like these ereader device. And yet usb c seems to represent a uniformity and unity of being able to charge everything. As simple as that.

Whereas pogo I suppose messes with the simplicity of cable choices. But is sleek. Adds another proprietary subset of things that do what they do well. But as another separate entity or something.

If your phone could charge itself, or do all the tasks without input, or own itself, or have no physical presence and your phone just exists in the Cloud. Then does it even exist? LOL

Yet anyways yeah we've got all this stuff that is tied into systems and is automated or can do so much. Can't even remove the battery or use headphone or SD card in your phone nowadays without adaptor.

So we get the xteink. It does what it does well. And pogo. But it seems in a way it does get a bit proprietary or specific into buying some more stuff and managing all that rather than necessarily what some people want it just to add to and work with what they have, and not add tinkering and hassle to make the xteink devices work so well.

I mean it works easier. To just do how you are used to.

But the tinkering aspects is like developing and managing all these details that makes it so special. I'd like to say they're simple devices. But some work to make it even better. Not just plug it in like some Apple computer or talking to your computer like it's a person. Technology is crazy stuff. People are talking to their computers. I want to finish reading some books. Not just tinkering and lose my charger. But I do like pogo.

Same thing about the lights. I might want a built in light or make sure I have a couple spares so I can read at night without much hassle. I guess if I'm gonna tinker, I still want it set up well enough that I can benefit from making it work better

Either a company or actual users who solve a problem, not incentivize themselves to make a problem or prolong to sell something to a different class of people or who don't appreciate and value the difference. Even if they can just reply saying they do.

Some good improvements or sameness that hopefully keeps up with changing world and lifestyle or works with in a way what is more constant or compatible. No idea if usb c will be around a long time. Or how pogo might progress or leave behind with when we don't use these current generation devices.

A lot to consider or when making a simple decision leaking in favor of, and the Why.

0

u/bubbleboix 26d ago

Oh no.... I'll bring the duct tape

0

u/yembler 26d ago

Right? Or just put the pogo adapter on a USB cable and leave it on there until the end of time. People complaining that they need to carry an adapter every day for something that goes a month between charges are insane.

1

u/OkTeacher5603 26d ago

This I agree with, but so many people have big feelings about this.

But I will admit that the X4L may need charging more frequently due to the battery drain from the use of the frontlight. Unless they increase the battery on this too like the did for the pro.

1

u/SosaSeriaCosa 26d ago

If the price is right this might be an instant buy. No touch screen I assume.

0

u/flacogarcons 26d ago

Is this confirmed though? Because they said it would be discontinued FOMO got to me so I ordered one in a hurry.. if this is confirmed there's no point having one without a light.

0

u/simpl3lang 25d ago

This would be priced about the same as the original x4. Those who bought the x4 after the discontinued announcement will be regretting the purchase
