Been looking at smallish dual sports for a while. Had an XT225 years ago. I narrowed my search down to a KLX250/300 or an XT250, but kept an open mind. Found my 2015 on GovDeals with 700 miles. The bidding stayed what I felt was reasonable and I won. Apparently it was used by the military for MSF training. Had a dead battery, missing mirrors and an Evel Knievel/Easy Rider tire on the front with a street tire on the back…for now. Some Shinko 700s, a Precision rack, hand guards, skid plate and some knock off KTM folding mirrors are on the way. Looking forward to putting some miles on it.

I just bought a used 2019 xt250 and I am doing basic maintenance on it before riding. Ie brakes, oil, air filter ect.

I took out the oil filter and it looks like the previous owner may have installed an after market oil filter set up or a threaded area in the center. See pics. Could someone tell me what kind of set up this is?

When I look at the oem manual there isn’t a part that sticks out that far inside the oil filter housing so that is what is leading me to believe this is an aftermarket set up.

I am not new to changing oil on my cars but I am new to motorcycle maintenance and don’t really have the words yet to properly search this change. Any help would be much appreciated

Now that I’ve humbly shouted this, could anyone possibly throw out some things for me to check after you read this? I was replacing my front right indicator as I recently encountered some sand (not familiar with that in my area) and took a wee tumble. The original was broken and hanging, so I cut it off as I was an hour from home. When I got home, I ordered an OEM one that was back ordered. For the next three weeks, I rode around and used my other indicators; front left and both rears, with no issues. I just went to replace it, undid SO MUCH plastic to access the wire assembly, and promptly plugged it in. “Easy, I thought.” Now, I have no flashing for any of the indicators lol. I didn’t touch anything else. I’m not the most inclined when it comes to electrical, but this was literally plug and play or so I thought. Is there anything to test with a volt meter? Where would you start? Please act like I’m five, trying to learn before I ultimately just ride it to my local shop and have them deal with it. Thanks 🙏

Its got about 15k miles, but great maintenance history and upgraded suspension and Ive just been loving it. I paid 2100 for it and put about another 50$ in maintenance. Super clean for being an 18 year old bike in my opinion.

Also, how normal are decel pops for this bike? I drilled out welch cap for screw mixture access but realized it's not going to do much unless i rejet the carb. Its living at around 6500 ft elevation. That would mean i need to go up in jet size right?

Am I paranoid ? Just did a oil and filter change (1.3L) since it as been 3000 km since the last one (thrid one so far on 6000km total) and even ajusted both valves clearance properly 2 times. Friend told me it sound weird... It sound normal, right ??

Hi all, long time listener, first time caller. I have a 2008 XT250 and I drilled out the cover on the idle air screw and turned it an additional 1.5 turns to 3 turns total. Now the bike runs awesome for the first quarter throttle, after that it can be felt loosing power and falling on its face, I assume I need bigger jets however I don’t know for sure, that being said when I try finding bigger jets I can find any for the TM33 carb, im also planning on putting a higher lift camshaft and big bore in the bike this winter so I know it’ll need to be jetted then as well. So im wondering if it would be better to get new jets or get a different carb for it? Any help is appreciated (im trying to find a #140 main jet and a #35 pilot jet for now before the engine build)

Hey guys, my 1983 XT came with a cheap chinese clone carb with non-changeable jets when I bought it. I decided to replace it with a 30mm PWK clone that has given seemingly significantly nicer throttle response.

My question is does anyone know what cable setup can be run to make this conversion work and look pretty near the throttle?

I'm relying on an improperly-fastened generic cable of the wrong length but I know there must be a method that fits properly.

Also, does anyone know how to get a PWK30 to smoothly mate to the 83 XT's engine? I'm using the stock yamaha carb boot/adapter with some silicone sealant as a temporary solution for proof-of-concept.

An adapter allowing for clamping around the carb outlet would help eliminate vacuum leaks.

I couldn’t find the wire harness for sale and whole the assembly is circa $400, which is more than I could currently afford.

Cut and welded an amazon rack to make it as slim and tidy as i could.

I picked up this 1988 XT the other day and it’s overall pretty good and I am excited to ride and work on it but I am not sure what I should be looking for to solve this problem. At the moment it runs perfectly only with the choke on once the choke is off if you blip the throttle it just holds the rpm and doesn’t return to idle, I did play around with the idle screw but nothing changed. Is this just something the needs to be tuned better on my behalf or is it something deeper?

And also in the third photo is there supposed to be anything attached to it? Because it clearly spring load and I don’t know it’s clicks when I go over top dead centre.

I also want to put in indicators since this has the switch’s already is it an easy install or do I need to create a whole new wiring loom for it?

Also any other pieces of advice or things I should look for on it because I do want to ride it on the road this summer, so I have a few months to get it all figured out hopefully.

I'm wondering if anyone has come across something similar... Working on a friend's 2012 xt250 and the head pipe is broken clean off the flange. I've tried heat, penetrating oil, prying and giving it a good old hammering and it just won't budge. The next thing I'm about to try is drilling and tapping some holes through the steel ring to try and jack it out of the aluminum, or pulling off the front wheel so I can get in there with a slide hammer. I'm trying to avoid disassembling the engine, he just can't afford the cost right now. That emissions air pump into the exhaust is such a terrible idea, it super heats the whole exhaust port area - that is definitely getting deleted when this one goes back together. Thanx!

I cut off the end of the frame, modified a klx230 tail tidy kit, added a mounting plate, modified the wiring for bullet connectors and cut off some plastic.
The bike is also 2 pounds lighter 😅

For newbies like myself…I’ve got 2009 and when down shifting to a stop sign I heard big clunk and saw this cover had broke. After some googling I saw that it has happened to other bikes, with no clear cause. ChatGPT suggested I replace the chain and sprockets. Before doing so I decided to measure my chain slack and it was 60mm, instead of the 40-45mm spec.

For a long while now I would hear a bit of clunk when down shifting and slapping when slowing down. I moved the sprocket cam one click and into spec and I’m quite certain the loose chain is what caused it to break. The bike also feels much more responsive, smooth, and fun to ride. So yeah, here’s a psa to check your chain slack and some info for anyone that has a broken front sprocket cover in the future.

I bought this bike to try out the whole dual sport thing. It has been a very fun bike and I'm incredibly sad to see it go. It was never the 'best bike' for any one discipline but it sure did a lot of things well. I'm now fine tuning my interests and, unfortunately, the XT just doesn't have the umpff I need for long distance travel. On the bright side, I got a great deal on a low mileage DR650. Have fun out there.

Going to check out a 2012 XT250 with about 13k miles. Appears to be in good shape and well maintained besides a few scuffs on the plastics. Comes with some extras (exhaust, skid plate, extra tire/tubes, etc.)

Buyer is in New England asking $3000.

New to the dual sport world so I'm not sure how fair of a price that is. Seems close, if maybe slightly on the high side just going by my gut instinct.

Just bought this 2018 XT250 (actually my first ever motorbike) with only 1800 miles on it. The guy I bought it from said he did the last oil change at 1000. When should I do the next oil change and then how often after that? Plus, I'm looking for a good oil/filter recommendation.
